Description

Mobius Rings, or simply Gold Rings, are a common sight on Mobius. Floating singly or in clusters, they spontaneously appear, and often disappear, seemingly at random- although they are most often found in undisturbed places due to their fragile nature.

Although they appear solid and metallic, these softly glowing rings are made of pure energy. Over the centuries the people of Mobius have tried to make use of them: as trinkets, as currency, and as a fuel source. However, the rings are ephemeral and tend to disintegrate into a handful of sparks after a while. Handling them roughly or damaging them destroys them just as easily- it’s said that some people can’t even touch a ring without it vanishing. Though their energy could presumably be harnessed somehow, it’s very difficult to store and transport something that will pop like a soap bubble if it’s squeezed or tapped too hard. Besides, technology that could make efficient use of them is yet to be developed.

At least as far as the average Mobian knows.

Gold Rings are seen as a harmless natural phenomenon- a form of ‘static,’ thrown around like snowballs by children to make each other’s fur stand on end. What kind of energy they are exactly, and why they form a perfect ring shape is not known. This hasn’t stopped them entering Mobian folklore and pop culture though. Perhaps not as much as the mythical Chaos Emeralds- but still, stories abound of ring-powered superheroes and fabulous machines. For most, though, a Gold Ring is nothing more than a curiosity.
