I'm one of those Sonic fans who is, quite unashamedly, very easy to please.
I'd say I was an oldschool fan, having been drawing the little blue git since the early '90s... but I enjoy Sonic Adventure and onwards just as much.
The one thing that annoys me about the Sonic fandom is the division in it. Of course, I'm not talking about everyone. But you do get purists who hate everything after 2001 on principle. 'Newbies' who ignore everything that came before. And the constant conflict between the two, the whining whenever a new game is announced... (seriously, guys? If you're going to assume something is terrible on principle before even playing it, why are you even bothering in the first place? Give things a chance, huh!)
Why? Yes, the newer games have their flaws. But the original ones did, too. Sonic 2 was riddled with glitches, and yet it's still a brilliant game. At the same time, there was a lot wrong with Sonic '06. But did you ever take the time to play it, ignore the flawed parts, and just have fun?
Because at the heart of it, new design or old, it's still Sonic. It's important to remember your roots, but at the same time... why not just judge each on its own particular merits and enjoy it for what it is?
After all, isn't having fun the whole point?

Amen, man! I love the old games, but I prefer the newer ones because they're easier for me to get my hands on XD But, at the end of the day, the original and Adventure are the best XD Let's hope Project Needlemouse will take us back to Sonic's roots like they KEEP PROMISING DX Oh, well, if not, we'll have to beat off the old-school gamers with sticks XD Plus we'd probably have a pretty interesting game on our hands XD

I agree with this completely. I am what I like to call a "Sonic Completist" I like the old games, (though I still have been unable to actually FINISH them

Didn't care to much for the lack of explorability within Sonic Heros, never got tyhe chance to play either of the "Adventure" games, I loathe Sonic Advance 2 and 3. I did like Shadow The Hedgehog.

I agree completely. Most of the new fans really need to experience the classics. Sonic 2 was my first game ever, and also my favorite. I wish it could get a little more recognition! D:

I really agree with what you're saying too. People make too much fuss over everything about Sonic, to the point where it's a series I have to enjoy purely as a series and not as a fandom. But anyway! Lovely portrayal of the different Sonics and the Megadrive. I really do like your older Sonic design, the damaged ear looks quite cute.

It's been a while since some of your work has appeared on the radar and it seems you haven't lost your charm for art at all. What's interesting about this piece is the collaboration of all three generations of Sonic with your own rendition as the third one. The renditions of the hedgies in your style is both adorable and charming in the illustrative form you work in. The designs are adorable and the way you have worked in different styles indicates how much talent you hold. The renditions are good and with your own little portrayal adds a fresh feel, though a bit more animation in the body language and facial expressions might have been something consider.
Your art style striking through the mixture of cell shading and painting cross over. It works well though some minor differences might be approached, but in a whole it is still very strong.

If I had to choose between old and new, it would be old - because the Megadrive games (2D) had a charm that I don't think anything in 3D can really capture. That said I do love the new games as well, especially Sonic Adventure 2 Battle - though I'm still stuck on that space level where Sonic goes upside down >.<

Hmm, you are quite right when it comes to the division between Sonic fans. Although I have not enjoyed a sonic game since Sonic and Knuckles, I have given every game after it a chance by playing it, each one giving many dissapointments.
Its just a shame, the classic Sonic is a clearcut difference to this New "Sonic". Classic Sonic truly is the only Sonic for me, Nice artwork though love the Classic sonic concept

But the 2D Games are, on average, superior to the newer 3D ones. Why they don't make some fleshed out art assets and create some 2D gameplay ala Smash Bros, New Super Mario Bros, Excite Bike: World Rally, Contra Rebirth, Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles, Ultimate Ghosts N' Goblins, or [dare I?] Shadow Complex or the like on a console, I have no idea. The Sonic Advance into Sonic Rush series of games are truly kickass... None of this Sonic Unleashed nonsense.
Oh, BtW, Nice Picture. Brings back memories of the grand War of Sega Versus Nintendo in which you and I would have been neighbors fighting against each other, heh.

I like all Sonic games in general and if I was a purist I wouldn't waste my time complaining, lol. AWESOME artwork! Who is the one with the white streak? I'd say werewolf Sonic, but it doesn't look like it. And, yeah, I enjoyed Sonic 06 but not as much as other Sonic titles.

I've played all the post-Adventure games and for the most part they are pretty bad - sometimes, it's like they have a great game but they go and ruin it by adding extremely flawed mechanics. Unleashed (Werehog) and Heroes (Teams) to name two. Some are just plain bad, Shadow (Boring level design, bland textures and convoluting the traditional 'run and run' gameplay, turning it into 'run and gun'
However, the odd gem comes along. Sonic Rush and, to an extent, the Sonic Advance series were both pretty good.
I do like this picture though - it seems to have something for everyone, from the new to the old among us.

I love how Sonic went from simply someone that blew up badniks while being impatient as hell, to someone with a lot more dept to the character. Note that i didnt play the games after Sonic adventure 2... lack of money and proper gaming platforms... but i did see about them on youtube and i love what i saw.
It is indeed sad to see how some ignores the past and some refuses the evolution.
but hey.. their losses... i love both <3

And yes, I agree with your post. Personally, I've enjoyed the new school Sonic, though my heart still adores the old one. He was a part of my childhood.
I LOVE Sonic and the Black Knight to death. It married everything I love about Sonic and one of my favorite mythologies. And Sonic with a sword is freaking cool.
And while I did prefer teh day stages in Unleashed, I did not mind playing God of Hedgehog either.

I've said things like this for years and I think we bumped into each other at the FanFiction site when I was publishing a united Sonic fandom guide.
You advocated the British Fleetway books to me, but at the time I was pretty unfamiliar with it. In the meanwhile, I've learned quite a bit and I really do want to congratulate you on helping to keep Sonic The Comic going via the Internet.

I like how the style, old sonic is a bit updated and weresonic is toned down a bit. The coloring looks quite nice and it's good to see that they're getting along!
I prefer the old games, I remember spending hours. I still had fun with the Sonic Adventures but I think the new ones lost an appeal from the older games that you could only achieve with a side-scrolling game. With 3D it throws in camera angle issues and totally changes the feel of the game when you're watching from behind. Expecting a similar experience to the old is what leads to the disappointment, but how many more of the old side-scrollers could they have made without us getting sick of it for them never being original.
I think if they ever tried a new little classic style side-scroller, similar to what was done the new mario game with a more 3D spin on the environment and characters it could be fun.

Seriously, people need to learn to play the games first before they go all bat-shit and critique about the gameplay and everything.
As you've stated, there have been gltiches in many of the sonic games.
Heck, i've even played Sonic Adventure 2 battle when i had the Gamecube, i couldn't possibly tell you the amount of glitches in that game.
I'd rather play the game for myself and enjoy it than listen to some of these so-called fans who complain that the games are not as good as the older versions and when they get something that suits them, they complain about it even more :/

That was exactly the point. Unleashed is often considered to be good, even though a lot of people bitch and moan about the whole werehog thing.
'06, however... well, I had a hell of a lot of fun with that game. Yes, it has glitches and deeply annoying loading screens, but every game has flaws. I can ignore those and enjoy what was good about the game, but some people refuse to see past those flaws... more so than with Unleashed. Which is why I put down '06 as an example.

Agreed, I admittingly looked down on a few Sonic games because of the little things, thanks for opening my eyes. I'm not the kind who's always disappointed before it even comes out. e__e I mean, if they're not pleased, why bother? I still enjoy the game itself. Couldn't reword what you said any better.

Jesus, I couldn't agree more and even more with you. It's extremely hard for me to agree with ANY Sonic fan anymore because everyone has their 'hate' on something. It's stupid. It's a cartoon! I had my little bickers with certain things, but once I gave them a chance I wasn't bothered by them anymore.
The picture is awesome. I've always loved the why you modify Sonic into your style -- which it's extremely hard for people to do without Sonic looks totally wrong. xD And your photoshopping skills are amazing.

hahah very fun pic, love older sonics relaxed posture and cocky expression. I also like how youngest sonic is equally as cocky. the one in the middle seems to be like a referee XD.
I personally like both the old and newer games, of course i do prefer the older games but i am a fan of older games in general but there are also newer games i love just as much.
it annoys me especially with the purists who ignore all the older games, it makes me very sad they would ignore sonics beginnings, where would he be without them.

I don't judge them all to be bad apples though, i befriended someone who loved sonic adventure but had also played unleashed, he loved it but hated the werehog form. i said i loved the werehog levels because they reminded me of the old knuckles 'search and punch' levels in SA. He agreed with me but said something like "why not just have knuckles". i dont think he was very rude atleast he didnt come over that way to me, i don't think i have had the misfortune to come across a very rude person to talk about the subject of old and new sonic.
