Description "Think you can beat my score, old timer?"
"Bring it, newbie~"
"Dude... watch out for that spike trap..."

~

I'm one of those Sonic fans who is, quite unashamedly, very easy to please.
I'd say I was an oldschool fan, having been drawing the little blue git since the early '90s... but I enjoy Sonic Adventure and onwards just as much.

The one thing that annoys me about the Sonic fandom is the division in it. Of course, I'm not talking about everyone. But you do get purists who hate everything after 2001 on principle. 'Newbies' who ignore everything that came before. And the constant conflict between the two, the whining whenever a new game is announced... (seriously, guys? If you're going to assume something is terrible on principle before even playing it, why are you even bothering in the first place? Give things a chance, huh!)

Why? Yes, the newer games have their flaws. But the original ones did, too. Sonic 2 was riddled with glitches, and yet it's still a brilliant game. At the same time, there was a lot wrong with Sonic '06. But did you ever take the time to play it, ignore the flawed parts, and just have fun?

Because at the heart of it, new design or old, it's still Sonic. It's important to remember your roots, but at the same time... why not just judge each on its own particular merits and enjoy it for what it is?

After all, isn't having fun the whole point?

~

--This also goes for this image. There's a lot wrong with it, from the Couch Of Fail Perspective to ohgodthecolouring.
But my point stands.

*gets down off soap box now* <.<

Im in the same boat as you, the WORST thing about sonic games today is just the so called fans alone! Seriously, Sonic can't make a good game anymore, these fucking 'fan-boys' won't let him because no matter what direction the company tries to take, they always find the smallest things to complain about!
I actually feel ashamed, we have the worst possible fan base ever! there is such a huge division between the old and new fans Its like we're supporting two completely different franchises altogether!

And seriously, what is up with everyone complaining about Eggman V Robotnik?? ITS JUST A NAME?? You never hear Mario fans complaining about King Koopa V Bowser, they just enjoy the games no matter what they are.
ugh, sorry for my little rant, I seriosuly feel ashamed to be a sonci fan sometimes, we have the worst possible fanbase it can get! And I'm betting Project Needlemouse is gonna get a lot of hate the minute they release a screenshot as well, dispite the only reason the game being made is for fan service!

You are right on what you say, that people either ignore what was before 2001 or hate by principle the recent games. On my part, I play the games before saying something about it, but I have to admit that even before the game came out (which I still played and labeled it as "*groan* What did they drink this time?"), the idea of the "werehog" was something that made me shiver and cry tears of blood...

And I loved Sonic 06 despite all the bugs. The story is wonderful and the character's design is well made.

...despite what you say about the colouring, I honestly, actually, think it looks so... smooth and slick and -nice- here, as it does in all your other drawings. Your use SAI, right? Cause damn, man, I just love how you colour

I love how you've got the different generations of hedgie here, too, obviously, and how you've got Stripy all anthro and the other Sonics... well, in Sonic style X3

As for the description? Dude, I couldn't agree more. XD Even despite the glitches and the loading screens and everything else wrong with Sonic 06, for example, I still LOVE it. I still enjoy playing through it. Because... it's a Sonic game. The elitism and pessimism in this fandom is ridiculous; I don't see why people call themselves Sonic fans if they trash the games coming out before even playing them, and then continue to trash them afterwards, and yet still deem themselves fans of the series as a whole. |D

In any case, this summarises what I'm trying to say perfectly:

"Because at the heart of it, new design or old, it's still Sonic. It's important to remember your roots, but at the same time... why not just judge each on its own particular merits and enjoy it for what it is?

After all, isn't having fun the whole point?"

Way to go, Thal. Seriously.

I agree with you Umbra.

Sonic games always have something fun there, and I can tell the developers are -really- trying.

Shadow the Hedgehog is a really under appreciated game, for example.

Sonic '06 is probably the worst 'new game' in terms of control and story, but it has it's good points.

The problem with recent Sonic games is Sonic Team's insistance with trying to jump on the band wagon with old trends. Like the 'wierd arm' trend (Sonic and the Black Knight) seen in Prototype, Bionic Commando, etc. The Dual World/quicktime event games like God of War, Metroid Prime 2, Twilight Princess, etc. in Sonic Unleashed.

The real gem lately, is Sonic Chronicles. The characters are written SO perfectly, it was amazing. Low budget game, sure, but really entertaining to play.

But yeah, people hate Sonic on principle these days and I don't get it.

Swirlything In reply to blindeyeinsight [2010-01-02 14:56:26 +0000 UTC]

I think Sonic games are like a middle-of-the-road rock band. They don't try to be anything but a bit of fun that appeals to as many people as possible. Sometimes they follow the current trends, and sometimes they get it wrong, but barring the occasional much-needed revinention and 'comback tour' most of the time they just do what they're known for doing. I personally think there's nothing wrong with that as long as it's still fun.

Unfortunately though, just like pop music- that means they have no credibility with hardcore gamers, who hate Sonic on principle. And when the games DO try something new, Sonic fans don't get what they expected- so they kick up a fuss as well.

Either way, people zero in on the flaws rather than the good points. After all 'it's just a Sonic game.'

Well said!
I know that Sonic games can still be excellent. I like it when they try new things, but it's especially well-done when they do some tried and true elements.

Sonic Advanced 2 comes highly recommended by me because IMHO it's almost as good of a platformer as Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Sonic Rush is in the same boat, esp. with the advent of Blaze.

Rumor has it the 2010 Sonic will be old-school.

The base colour on classic Sonic looks brilliant. It makes the shading look so much more dynamic (somehow) than on the other two.

Yeah, in terms of colouring he's the best out of the three. Really it's a shame; I prefer a darker blue for Sonic, like on the other two- but it's harder to work with that tone and get decent results.

having played every sonic game made since day one..... thus far.... on every console.

I have to say the hit and miss tally is much better for the little blue guy before sonic heroes. Yes sonic the hedgehog 2 had glitches, but it was a good game, shadow the hedgehog, sonic the hedgehog (reboot) and unleashed were all really poor. not just glitchy, but bad storytelling, sound , visuals (although unleashed was good for the visual side of things) and gamplay. its something people feel the need to talk about so much because they know that the character can be used to such a great level, even quite recently in the sonic advance and rush games.

The problem is sega's mistaken idea of cool and what the fans want. Each time they say they are stipping back only to have added yet another bad gimmick.

i wrote this blog [link] at gamespot on the subject of sonic and how i feel things could be improved, if your interested have a read, so i wont go on too long here. Im very passionate about the little blue guy. so much so ive started collecting all the sonic tv shows to start screening on my live stream tv channel "all your game are belong to us". lol.

On another note i do find it saddening that so many people on deviant art do sonic fan art. And that it normally consists of them creating 100 different hedgehog characters. Its saturated the site in a bad way. If there were people who attempted new ideas for characters , or not hedgehogs it wouldnt be too bad. But this much cloaning has a negative effect. especially when theres lots of other things to do fan art for.

This isnt an knock on you, ive liked what you do for a while and you do it very well.

I suppose its just signs of degridation, the more somethings recreated the poorer the copys become.

I cant complain too much , ive done sonic fan art / characters myself over the years and accounts ive had. but ive always attempted to limit myself and keep it original.

oh yeah i looooooved the bits where i couldnt finish a level because it didnt regester that i'd actually beaten all the monsters in the area. The poor controls and the character (its not really sonic now is it) that you had no choice over if you had to play or not.

If they had given us two storys , and one was sonic and the other was waresonic, or something like him (just any clobber based knucklehead would have done) where you could play through as one story and then if you chose the other. Making the play have to play as something other then sonic is just taking away the fun that they would have had choosing to play as both.

they say never judge a book by it's cover, and I say don't judge a Sonic game by the critiques who neither played it, or are hard-core Mario fans~

As much as I've heard hate towards the '06 game, I'm being more and more convinced to try and play it myself. I've heard the same hate about Chris, Cosmo and Elise, and frankly, they're not as bad as most fans claimed them to be, either.

But anyway-- I really love the way you did them Hedgehogs in this picture! I cant stop comparing their shoe details, though, SA2 Sonic seems to be the one taking it the easiest here, as the other two battle brain and wits... and wiseass'ing each other~ XD;

Nostalgic, sweet and simple,

'06 has some bloody annoying levels and glitches, but any game does, really. It's a lot of fun if you give it a chance, the loading screens are probably the worst part. It's worth it just to play as Shadow and watch the npcs run away flailing when you Chaos Spear them though <.<'

Hehe, SA2 sonic seems to be the only one paying attention to the game XD XD maybe I should have given him popcorn XD

yeah a full year but i agree. 06 was a love letter to the style of play the adventure series has. the game was unfinished and needed more time. if they went back and fixed it it would be fine. the newer sonic games are good. i like em. but i feel like i'm on a rollercoaster that takes me where i need to go rather than me just going where i want to go. basicaly the daytime levels type deal. i'm done with it. what i want for sonics future is a complet mix up of the two futre gameplay types adventure style and daystage style. that way everyone wins. also sega stop doing the first act is the best act while the others are misssion or shorter stages deal. colors brought that out full force. -_-
