Another entry for Short Challenge #13 - Special Halloween . My concept for this piece comes from more ancient zombie lore, in which zombies aren't mindless brain-hungry undead monsters, but rather are corpses that have been reanimated with hoodoo in order to serve as slaves to the hoodoo-practitioner who reanimated them. I didn't want this piece too dark in tone so that it would be distanced from the macabre and ravenous zombies we see in modern depictions. I wanted to depict the reanimation as if a soul were reentering the body, so I tried to show a light from the spell-book to the corpse, lighting the body up from within. In order to further highlight the fantastic nature of the subject matter, I decided to have it look like it was an illustration as opposed to a photograph.
