People impressed by this should look at the sprites in/play KOF XIII. Probably an easy contender for the best sprite work ever put into an actual commercially released game.

Do you make it in 3D then you render it on 2D or everything is in 2D? I'm confused because it looks really smooth

Assuming that the one in the middle is a combination of the other two either side of it, I must say it's my least favorite of the three. I love the black and white shading one on the right the most, it looks spectacular. I'd buy a fighting game in that art style.
However, all in all, they look amazing.Β
