I traced the outline and then painted it from observation. digitally, of course. and thank you!! (I actually hardly ever practice....BUT THAT WILL CHANGE)

With my subscription I can see deviants that have visited my page. I got bored so I went down the list a ways, but first one I saw was yours so I jumped in to find some pretty neat stuff.
I don't think I have a steady enough hand, even on my WACOM, to outline a picture of any sort. Sucks. But I still just use photos for reference, nothing changes that.

oh, well, I can't do perfect line-art type outlines in single strokes. I might never be able to.... I always use a shitload of low-opacity, sketchy marks. XD

well......I'll be the first to admit that the way I went about painting this was HORRIBLE. and it's (sadly) the way I've always done art, and it's also what makes art teachers angry with me. I tend to completely render certain areas of a piece at a time. like, I painted the entire hat in full detail before starting anything else (well, except all the hairs on the white part, which I did towards the end; otherwise I'd've just ended up accidentally covering them up).
also, you might should know that I initially traced the photograph. but then I painted it all from scratch (with the photograph open in a separate window, of course). I never trace things, but this wasn't for practice; I had to finish it very quickly for my family's Christmas card. ....which my dad ruined with a horribly cheesy message on the inside.
....sorry, that probably wasn't exactly worth reading. but anyway, I'll probably make a tutorial when I'm more pleased with my technique. again, thank you! :]

no, it's not Gray, but it would be a lot better if it were. it's some random cat.......I painted it from a picture I found on Google (I traced the outlines but did the painting myself). does that make it seem less impressive? it probably should.
I would shoot myself if I made Christmas cards for a living..but yeah, they probably do pay a lot

if I'd had to draw one more hair, I'm fairly certain my arm would have fallen off. for most of the fur I just used a bristly brush, which happened to resemble fur. but I also had to use a pencil tool a lot...on edges, particularly.....that was a bitch.....but rather a fun bitch
