Hierapolis in Phrygia (not in Anatolia, Turkey) was famous since the 2nd century B.C. for its healing waters, and was used as a spa. Doctors flourished. Of course, not all the people who came to benefit from the properties of the water actually got well. Many were also old people, come to enjoy the soothing thermal waters. People of the city died, too. And so a massive necropolis began to come into existence, amounting to some 1'200 tombs. Social status determined what kind of tomb one could afford, but the deceased's origin also influenced its form, so some had temple-like mausolea, whilst others were buried in tumuli. Yet others had sacrophagi, and the poor, simple dug graves-
