This is an assignment for drawing class. We had to do a self-portrait in any black and white media. This was a study for my expression for my lifesize painting self portrait (still very much in progress). I wanted to give myself an expression of sudden realization and understanding, shock and epiphany, but have it be subtle. I think I sort of accomplished that in this. After doing this drawing I've decided on a new composition so I won't be using this. I was in a room with a fold back wall in the middle, and the light peeking through forms the white stripe and dots behind me.

The new composition would add to the emotion you desire to create; its like a "lightbulb" if you will, the realization would also be throughout the composition not just in your expression. Have you done the new portraite yet?

thanks for the input, probably some of the better criticism i've gotten on dA. however my idea transformed quite a bit, turning into this in the end:
