Description
Wow, did this ever get away from me. And my poor discount computer, trying to handle six or seven layers at that size. It was not happy with me.I kinda designed this like it was a storybook illustration, perhaps an illumination painted on leather or parchment. Save for the final pair of Luna and Celestia in the foreground, who are demonstrating their vast, cosmic powers by casually stepping into the painting.
And there's some headcanon here too, or is it wishful thinking? As with many of us, "Magical Mystery Cure" burst all my alicorn theories like big, pastel-colored, pony-shaped balloons. So I latched onto our new worldbuilding tidbit, that alicorns were once ordinary ponies. It occurred to me that there was a G1 pony who was white with pink hair and had a solar name: Sundance. I love the idea that Celestia used to be an earth pony (it seems wrong to restrict ascension to unicorns), though this does hinge on ponies being able to change cutie marks.
Anyway, it seems I still have a long way to go with using color and arranging elements in a picture, but hey, it was fun.
ETA: Featured here on a new site, Equestria Confidential , devoted to fanwork. Thanks, guys!
2nd Edit: Featured on EQD's 799th Drawfriend! Wow. Just... wow.
Done in ArtRage, using chalk.

Wow, this is incredible. I think you did an awesome job on the shadows and the highlights. The picture is very well done in your use of imagery of the many events that these two shared. Your symbols of the two cutie marks that are merged together really support your vision I think. And, in my opinion it looks like parchment like you said in the background, which i really love because it tells a story of a very long time ago.
Overall this picture is astounding, keep up the amazing work!!

Oh my, this is spectacular! Easily your best work, I think. There's so much detail, so much emotion, so much going on visually, and yet it all works together beautifully. I love it.

Thank you! I was worried that it was too busy, especially since the focus had to be split between the different scenes.

You needn't worry. I think it's just about right. The scenes are a lot to take in at once, but it's not overwhelming at all. Just beautiful.

This would be so awesome as the face of a grandfather clock.

I see what you mean, but there's one difficulty: the center of the circle is right on top of Celestia's head! It would be cool to figure out a clock-face version, though. Especially since grandfather clocks often have that day/night sun/moon motif.

Hmm. Maybe that rotating zodiac that is in most clocks could be replaced by those scenes you painted. That would be pretty cool.

Thanks! I tend to get bogged down with details, so it's nice to hear that it paid off.

Isn't it a great program? It absolutely blew me away the first time I used it. I couldn't believe how much it acts like ordinary paints and stuff. It's like having all the colors in the box and they never run out.
Are you using version 3.5 or 4? I'm still on 3.5 and really, really want to upgrade. I want to make my own brushes.

I'm on version 4. But you can actually make your own brushes in 3.5
And yeah, I originally learned how to paint digitally with Corel Painter 12, that is neither a fun nor friendly paint program despite being the "premier" digital paint program. ArtRage all the way!
