Wow, did this ever get away from me. And my poor discount computer, trying to handle six or seven layers at that size. It was not happy with me.I kinda designed this like it was a storybook illustration, perhaps an illumination painted on leather or parchment. Save for the final pair of Luna and Celestia in the foreground, who are demonstrating their vast, cosmic powers by casually stepping into the painting.
And there's some headcanon here too, or is it wishful thinking? As with many of us, "Magical Mystery Cure" burst all my alicorn theories like big, pastel-colored, pony-shaped balloons. So I latched onto our new worldbuilding tidbit, that alicorns were once ordinary ponies. It occurred to me that there was a G1 pony who was white with pink hair and had a solar name: Sundance. I love the idea that Celestia used to be an earth pony (it seems wrong to restrict ascension to unicorns), though this does hinge on ponies being able to change cutie marks.
Anyway, it seems I still have a long way to go with using color and arranging elements in a picture, but hey, it was fun.

Seriously, though: Luna became Nightmare Moon. After she was defeated, Nightmare Moon vanished and Luna was herself again. Does that make sense?

Do you mean, did I trace any pictures? I tried to imitate the style of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but I didn't trace anything. This was drawn freehand.
As a little girl, I was a big fan of My Little Pony. I've recently gotten back into it, after watching Friendship is Magic and have had a lot of fun learning new art skills. The original ponies are often my inspiration.

This is BEAUTIFUL! I love the radial storytelling in this piece. The color blending and values are fantastic, as is the character structure. The dynamic poses clearly portray emotion and say what the character is feeling. I love this piece, awesome work!

alicorn ascension isn't limited to unicorns though, it's been proven. cadence actually used to be a PEGASUS and not a unicorn, she ascended in the same fashion as twilight because of her great knowledge of love. also, yes ascension can change the cutie mark, as twilight now has 6 smaller stars around her cutie mark instead of 5

What are your sources? Not saying I don't believe you: the creators have given us all kinds of fun info through twitter and Q&As and such. Screenshots from Magical Mystery Cure show that Twilight's cutie mark hasn't changed, in spite of the six-star version that showed up in two other places in the episode. But it wouldn't surprise me if one of the animators has spoken up with "We goofed! It'll be fixed next season."

there's info about pegasus cadence near the bottom just above toys
i can't find any screenshot's of a 6 star twilight, however during magical mystery cure when she is alicornifyed the star that resembles her cutie mark has 6. the flags that the fluttershy lookalikes carry as they walk down the hall also have 6 stars, so it was probably just an animation derp with twilight's mark

We share some of the same sentiments concerning alicorns, magical mystery cure has thrown in a lot of questions about alicorns we already know. Was every alicorn not an alicorn at one point? Does becoming an alicorn change one's destiny? How did Cadence become an alicorn? In what way is Twilight the 'first' pony to become an alicorn? Are the others genetic alicorns? Did Twilight just learn one way to become an alicorn? Can somepony who isn't a unicorn become one? Is it being an alicorn or use of the Elements of Harmony that made the sisters 'immortal'? Is it possible to stop being an alicorn?

Cadence's story is in Twilight Sparkle's theme book "The Crystal Heart Spell". Cadence was an orphaned pegasus. She somehow defeated a witch using her love and found herself in the spectral plane. Celestia came along and was surprised to find her there and decided to adopt her. So, yes, it would seem that non unicorns can become alicorns.

I'm not familiar with cannon stuff outside the episodes. With this added information I am still wondering if becoming an alicorn makes one immortal, or if it is because of the Sisters' past with the Elements of Harmony. I will have to read stuff on the non televised cannon material.

I forget what staff on the show said this, but it was said that Twilight will not outlive her friends. So, there are a few conclusions people have come to. First being, that she and Cadence do not have spectral manes and are different from the higher alicorns and are not long living/immortal. The other is that somehow the elements of harmony have caused the other element bearers to have longer lives. It really hasn't been explained more in the show, so we'll just have to keep throwing theories around until something conclusive comes up, if it ever comes up.

Sometimes I wish they would expound, but then again I'm glad they don't take all the imagination from the fans. It makes me curious though, if what you say is cannon: Why is there all the artwork of Twilight lamenting her friends, wouldn't a youthful Applejack or Rarity next to the bedside of an elderly Applebloom or Sweetiebell be more likely?

well, it was only in a twitter reply that the staff (specifically Meghan McCarthy) made that comment. Not everyone reads those or follows the posts made on Equestria Daily. Some make the artwork and stories because it tugs on the heartstrings. Here's the Equestria Daily link that gives the information. [link]
The theory I like to stick by right now is that there are differences with the Alicorns. Luna at the beginning didn't have the flowy mane, but later she did. I think that that was caused by the corruption (but of course it could always be lack of thought animation wise since she also seemed smaller then as well). I don't think that Cadence or Twilight will have the flowy mane because they are different and not long living. Until something/someone comes along that explains alicornhood better, that's what I'll be basing my theories around.

Of course one could expect hasbro to make a marketing choice of giving an ethereal mane (maybe on top of a color change) to one of the younger alicorns. Supporting the theory that Celestia and Luna are still on a higher tier of Alicorn.

I always enjoy this type of thing, the way you can see Luna go from loving lady of the night to its dark mistress and then get redeemed.
