Description
For a long time i was curious about how other emoticonist created some of the animated backgrounds i had seen in avatars. As i look at them now they are not that complicated, but at first glance they look confusing and hard to create.I have taken the time to study 3 different effects and have since created a set of frames which simplify the motions. I feel is a shame to keep them all to myself so have created a pack of frames which people can use in their own creations.
The pack contains separate frames for each of the 3 animations, along with a animated version. Feel free to download and alter these as you wish. Credit is always appreciated, though not totally necessary
Below is also some information on how the effects have been created or work. it is not the easiest thing to explain, so i apologise if the explanations are not that clear
Pulse
This animation is made up of a 4 frame loop. A series of circles decreasing in size are places on top of each other to create a set of coloured rings. You then then animate the rings outwards by moving the colours one ring further out each frame.
The animation can also be used to create a pulse moving inwards by reversing the frame order. You can also add additional colours to the background, however this will require additional frames which can be added.
Swirl
The swirl is created by rotating an image around a central point. I chose to use 8 frames at it gave a fairly smooth finish. This resulted in each frame rotating an additional 22.5Β° each time.
All of my frames are drawn out by hand so may not be as exact as possible, but many drawing programs are able to automatically rotate by a set number of degrees
Scroll
The scroll is one of the easier effects to set up, but takes the most number of frames. The base is simply a rectangle filled with diagonal lines and to create the animated motion you simply move the base 2 pixels in the same direction each time. This will create a scrolling effect.

I'm glad you thought of doing such a pack, this is a very useful tool indeed. Might give it a try at creating an avatar when I'm done with my college papers.

So...Thank you!

I don't know how to ask this...but would you know how to put the frames individually into Photoshop 6, or Paint, or Fireworks or something and then edit it.
For example if I wanted to put in emoticon on the first frame of the swirl, how would I put that individual frame into one of the programs listed above?
Thanks....

I presume you'd open the file in said program, then copy and paste it onto your emote's canvas
