either have the contact (leap part)go by faster, or the passing poses(when the legs get closer together)

really good! but if you want it to make it run or jump, try lifting the half upper body when jumping and lifting the waist down once the upper part hits the floor

I think you could add some bounce to give it more personality.

i like your art all i could ask for you to improove are the hips because- theyre a lil to smoll i mean its ok when you draw them smoll on the guys because theyre pelvises arnt meant to be big but the female pelvis is bigger since it needs to be able to contain a baby and sometimes your eyes float over the hair... but i love your art QWQ

I agree with the other posts on here that there should be a 1234 motion going on with the feet, but I see where you were going with this. Even in animals like rabbits that seem to run like the way that you're trying to animate, there's a slight parting of the feet, as the front and back legs would be exerting a lot of energy and would be tiring and clunky after a while.

Also, if someone's running this fast, it'd be best to show more "up and down" motion in both the hips and arms. Keep your center of gravity in mind, as the legs are propelling that one center of focus forward. This was a mistake I often had while animating walk cycles in school at first; I was so caught up in the overall look of the character, I forgot about the mechanics. Keep in mind the terrain too because that also effects how the character runs, even if it's a flat plane like this.

I've given more than my two cents on this lmao - - best of luck going forward! I just recently started looking at your work, and I'm pretty impressed! I'll be watchin'! ^^

EDIT :

One more thing!! Rather than giving you already-animated sequences to study, it's best to look at real life examples instead of stylized takes so you can understand the hardcore, square-one mechanics. Using other references is kind of a bad practice because you take on that artist's approach (and faults!) rather than growing your own - like shortcuts in math! You may get the problem right using that trick, but it's best to go the long way first so you understand the approach, on top of getting the problem right.

Here's a video of a bunny running around in someone's yard;

Here's a horse goofing around that you can see lots of different motions in;
youtu.be/zBAoA6TRH9Y

My animation teacher also liked the use of squirrels in one of our Disney animation textbooks - see how the base of tail maneuvers almost identical to the body with every curve of the spine... This should help give you a focus point while moving forward, as the tail doesn't have much weight to it, therefore emulating the movements of the spine, hips and head closer.

The leggiez shouldn't be travelling together, take reference on how an actual horse runs, it's like 1 foot/hoof at a time.

Running part:

The running animation here resembles more of a cat, try to emulate the leg movements that you see in irl running horses. In your animation,Β  the front legs spend a lot of time sliding backwards on the ground, but if you look at this:

media.giphy.com/media/z4xSFf9C…

you'll see that the hooves don't spend much time touching the floor, every step is quick and kick like, ending in a curling retraction of the front legs, as seen here:

media2.giphy.com/media/3o6Mbun…

Don't be afraid to add more movement to all of the legs, and don't be afraid to part them. The hips also seem to be going over the shoulders, the shoulders and hips should be equal.

But, when animating, it's important to add bounce and energy to the movement. The head should be more forward and lightly moving up and down (slightly diagonally).

Last thing, the character is oddly slowing and stopping. Likely, in all the examples I provided, you'll notice that the running is at a consistent speed, this also applies to jumping,

Jumping part:

The consistent speed part still holds, and while leaping, horses spend a lot more time in the air and (fly?) in a bigger arch, visible here:

Animating in the MLP style can be tricky because there are no anatomically prominent hooves. It was hard to find a good example gif, but this one has a pretty good mastery of the leg movements and style:

Sorry for the bible-sized crituque, I excluded basic advice like a 'higher framerate' because I'm 100% certain you already know that because your animations like the 'Why love me' meme are really smooth!

ZachariaT [2019-02-22 23:17:42 +0000 UTC]

You may want to make it a higher frame rate because that will increase the smoothness of the animation, as well as making it bounce more when it jumps up to give it a more alive as well as cartoony feel. Other than that I think its prettyΒ good.

also!
watch a dog walk cycle, may not be ponies but, same idea with timing and the legs! (And with how you draw ponies, it might help you more than watching a horse walk cycle qwq)

When the legs contacts while running they should be pulled a little bit more in that gives it a "I'm running away feeling"

The back legs look a bit to short so I think making them a bit longer (about the level of the front legs) would do the job, and I think making the front legs more pointed then they go back because it kinda looks like she has spaghetti for bones. Other than that it looks good ^^

I have a little critique, but it's not like I can do any better lol. Try to make it a bit more fluid, as in a bit less stiff. Like, probably just making the chest and head move a bit more is enough, maybe by making the chest move a bit further away from the behind as the legs are reaching outwards

Maybe a head bounce? And probably move the body up more when they're in the air. It would also be good if you added more of the impact of hitting the ground with the back legs (Don't forget to make the back legs as long as the front)

Maybe make the front legs jump up too, it kinda looks like they’re scraping on the floor. But, I guess that’s look like a dog is running, so time the legs at different times if you do follow my advice.

ItsLunarNight [2019-01-04 03:36:52 +0000 UTC]

i think you should have the legs moving at different times right now the front legs move with each other same with the back if one leg from each side is moving even a little bit behind or in front the other it'd probably look a little more fluid

ghostlylilacs [2019-01-04 01:50:40 +0000 UTC]

I think maybe you should move the back half more down as the hooves touch the ground or maybe move the top half of the pony higher up than the bottom.Β

needs to look like the spine is bending to give the creature the full boost for running; more fluid
what you can do to help is draw a line representing the spine
other than that, you did good on the legs! ^w^

i hope this helps!

MoonlightDrawsStuff In reply to AntonymphSpikeyDog [2019-01-04 00:38:11 +0000 UTC]

I agree. though it doesn't look half bad, you should add more leg movement and maybe a spine. I recommend looking at videos of animals running and look carefully at their structure and movement. I did, and got this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKO1CC… to show an example (kinda choppy but am still new to animating)

edit: forgot to mention head moment and it depends on what's happened to the character (running through a field, into battle, being chased, etc.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

SparkKitsune [2019-01-03 12:13:31 +0000 UTC]

the head is fairly stationary above the chest, I suggest adding a small bounce back as they rear for the jump and then a small bounce forward as they lunge

The-Piranha-King [2019-01-03 05:27:11 +0000 UTC]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

LunicAngel [2019-01-03 03:47:55 +0000 UTC]

if you want it to be a running animation it depends on the animal cause horses bob their head up and down when they run while dogs keep their head pretty still.
