This game!!!I seriously love Doki Doki Literature Club.
The writing was fantastic, the music really helped set the tone, the characters were so lovable (and relatable).
My favorite girl was of course Yu-M̷̡̡̛͙͎͎͉͖͍̮̟̞̦̌̅̓͂̄̂̂ǫ̷̱͚̠̫͔̘̭̖̜͑̄̃̚͝ǹ̴̢̛̺͇͈̠͎̺̥̜̯̼͈̒̑̋̒̀̔̊̑̊̕̚i̶̝̎̄̋͊͌̔́̅̅̚k̶̝̗̜̬̯̻̭̹̹̥̘͇͗̀̔͒́͂͋̊̂a̷̩̝̼͛͆̏̅́͝
Monika is the best. She's so smart and pretty. That's the only one I love. Just Monika. I just want to put this out there for those who haven't played the game or are seeing this for the first time; I watched IT (2017) and Doki Doki scared me more.

The only thing I know about this game is that the one pink-haired girl hangs herself and then the game glitches up. Seriously, that's the meme?! What more is there to it than that and what makes people love it so much?

For me it was the writing that made me love it; the use of foreshadowing, the dialog exchanges between characters (and the characters are are more than just one-dimentional clichés, I saw parts of myself in each of the girls), the writing advice (they give writing tips, one of which was really helpful and poetic), some of the jokes sprinkled in were good, the girls' poems that you read in the game (they show more characteristics of the girls, and the effectiveness of different writing styles / opinions). I really loved the writing (and characters).
Then there's the music, it was catchy and each song helped set the mood of the scene, which just helped the overall experience (especially the ending credits song, I've been humming it for three days now).
Sayori (the pink haired one), when she hung herself it was actually stressful, and I knew it was coming too (I've seen the image online before). It was the moments leading up to it that made my heart sink all the way to the deepest depths of my stomach.
Then there's things I can't go into without spoiling too much.
All I can say is that it was an experience, one I'm glad I went on.

Shame, but I respect your decision. This game isn't for everyone, I know people personally who would hate everything about this (they don't like cutesy-anime or horror).
Also the game took me about 9 hours to play, and it took more than 4 to get to the really good stuff, so it's pretty time consuming (second playthrough took 6 hours total, and I was speed reading).

Personally it's a bit of shame for me that it's horror-themed. I really enjoy the cute anime aspect of it, but horror just isn't something I'm able to enjoy unfortunately.

I don't like horror that much either (Bioshock 1, Steven King's IT 2017, and Doki Doki are the only exceptions so far). To me it worked in Doki Doki because it was supposed to be all cutesy-anime stuff luring you into a false state of security before messing with your head. That's why I loved it, because it got into your mind about being scary (although the visuals themselves did get scary as well), it was not just *LOUD NOISE*
It's not for everyone, but I personally loved it (though the first night I played it I had a hard time falling asleep).

Yeah. My issue with horror is that I've experienced scary stuff IRL, so it doesn't feel like a game/film to me, it just feels like I'm in danger again.
I'm still thinking of trying Doki Doki though, because I do like what I've heard about the story/characters.

Oh, yeah I could see why that would turn somebody away. I just don't like horror because I don't like the way my heart pumps too quickly and how stressed out I get from it, so I can't really relate to horror on the same level as you because I haven't had an experience like that outside of games / films.

It's a Visual Novel. Not much for gameplay besides clicking menus to progress. It's all story driven anyway. Not only that, the game is free.
