Description In order to help give context and provide fellow artists with a point of reference for drawing my characters, I decided to create this "Drawing Conclusions" series which draws visual comparisons between my OC's and other more famous cartoon characters.

Although there has been a wealth of cartoon snakes throughout the course of Cartoon History (most of them being villains), the Disney snakes, Kaa and Sir Hiss, were major inspirations for the design of my own serpent OC, Jake the Flying Snake. In fact, Jake not only owes his general appearance to them, but certain character traits and abilities as well. Although evil, Kaa and Hiss both share the characteristic of being soft-spoken with meek trembling voices. (Kaa, in particular, originally shared the same voice actor with Winnie the Pooh). Jake also has a soft meek-sounding voice. He never shouts and barely ever speaks above a whisper (he'd make a great librarian).

Appearance aside, Jake's personality is far more akin to Sir Hiss, for like him, Jake is very shy, reserved, and has a tendency of being a jittery worry-wort. Even the idea of him being able to fly was inspired by Sir Hiss...that plus I felt I needed to alter his name in some way after I realized there was already a has-been wrestler who went by the name of "Jake the Snake"; hence the origin of Jake's mastery of flight.

A lot of you probably think drawing snakes is easy since their whole body is technically one long line, but you'd be dead wrong! Through my experience, I've found that snakes are some of the hardest animals to draw because their bodies are a mess of the worst kind of line...a wavy line! Snakes' bodies are a nightmare of curves and contorted twists making them a bitch to draw half the time. Drawing them is bad enough! Don't even get me started on ANIMATING them!!

Jake's design is extremely simplified in comparison to other animated serpents. For as you will note the alternate color of his underbelly ends right at the base of his chin and neck. As I would later find, this is a very unique design choice, as I've only seen one other animator use a style similar to this so far. Why did I choose not to extend the color of his underbelly? Long Answer: "because I was a complete amateur when I first drew Jake well over 10 years ago." Short Answer: "Because I was a lazy fuck!" At any rate, the design has since grown on me, and I don't see myself changing it too greatly now. Drawing Jake's face has also proven to be a trifle cumbersome, as his snout is not rounded or pointed like most cartoon snakes, but slightly flat like a duck's bill making it a pain in the ass to draw depending on the angle.

And he borrows his manner of flight from Tails the Fox more or less.
