in my universe lore (that you can read more about in the link above), people's visual appearance (and it's reflection of viable shapeshifting genes) is of incredible importance in most major societies- and clowns as a religion oppose this by disguising everything about themselves with baggy, colorful clothing that obscures physical features, individualized masks that cover things like eyes and face/snout/teeth, and even things like voluntary silence to disguise a voice/tone.
Lyco's parents didn't force him to be accept a clown lifestyle (his mom isn't one), but he admires his dad and wants to be like him
Lyco has a long tail- a serious distinguishing feature about his appearance and lineage, so when he gets old enough it'll be his decision whether or not to crop it.
