Description
Awali, the first recorded King of the Ndona Kingdom. With him there was the speculation of whether he was truly born on Pride Rock or not. But the history points to him being born there. Especially since his long lived vendetta against the Prides within the Backlands and Outlands.
So Historians have him as a cub born to the Pride on Pride Rock. It's believed he had at least three siblings. Three siblings that met their untimely deaths as young cubs.
The points to him being born at Pride Rock is that there was a recorded Pride there when he was estimated to be a cub. One that was conquered by the Prides of the neighboring territories. Their male(s) ousted and their lionesses split between the two prides.
While a cub surviving a takeover is far from realistic, it isn't entirely impossible. And Awali when he was first discovered by the Grass Walls had the wounds that could come from fellow lions. It wasn't far fetched to place him among the Pride Rock lions.
The mandrills of Grass Wall were hesitant to allow the cub sanctuary within their territory, but eventually they did allow him to remain there. There was no laws that forbade killing of young, so while they would let him be safe there, they wouldn't turn away any of those involved either.
Luckily for him, none of the lions ever sought him out however. Also lucky for him was one of the younger mandrills taking an interest in him. After all, he shouldn't be alive, he has to be alive for a reason! The two struck up quite the friendship despite her parents disapproval.
And since it was the role of Grass Walls to tend to animals, and give words of advice this helped Awali gain access to many more animals he otherwise would've never met. And while some were quick to scoff off this scarred cub, some were willing to amuse him with advice or even "training" him like their own young would be.
And through this, he started to learn how to survive like many of the other animals. How to hunt, to hide, and how to even approach others. As he got older some even offered to spar with him.
Though some rumors claim he also learned how to fight from a beast that was kept within the territory. No one can quite agree on this, since the fabled monster was said to have killed anything it managed to catch.
But it is agreed upon, that these lessons from these other animals. No matter how little gave him more of an insight of how to live. But along with it, they gave him appreciation of the lives that existed in the circle along with lions.
And despite his horrific wounds, and low expectations of survival, Awali managed to grow into a rather large and healthy lion. Hunting only where it was permitted, and gained respect among many who visited. There was no fear of poachers or even tresspassers with this brute around.
Awali just never left the desire of returning to his home, and taking vengeance against those who not only tried to kill him, but succeeded in killing his siblings.
And luck seemed to be further on his side when a Pride of lionesses eventually arrived to the Grass Walls. A Pride that would eventually Awali would integrate into.
It's believed that they had experienced a hostile takeover themselves. And rather than allow this new male to rule them, they had chosen to flee. And Awali's warmth and nicety to the cubs (unlike most who would have tried to immediately take the young out), made them welcome him with ease.
The Grass Walls however was never capable of holding an entire group for too long. At least not a group of that capacity. And Awali didn't fight them when they were requested to leave. Though he did take his mandrill friend with him.
And luckily for everyone he had a perfect home for them in mind. Even with it ravaged with a drought it was agreed to be the perfect home.
His hatred of the Prides inhabiting the lands was clear, and it eventually spread to the lionesses.
The first territory he took was the Outlands, the weakest of the Prides. And it just had to be a stoke of luck that the Pride cubs had snuck away. He didn't even have to fight, the head male was bowing immediately to save his children.
The head male of the Outland Pride and Awali was noted throughout history. With Awali targeting the male whenever he could, but it wasn't Doubted that the male seemed to follow Awali no matter what. And Awali repaid this by not ousting him like he did the other subordinate males within the Pride.
Though this loyalty was believed to be due to Awali's Pride keeping the cubs and refusing to let him or even his lionesses near them. Though this is debated due to a later law enacted by Awali.
With the help of both his Pride and the Outland Pride they swiftly conquered the last Pride. And like the former, he ousted any of the males who opposed him.
It shouldn't of been possible that he conquered two Prides. But it had happened. The Outland cubs were reunited with their parents, and in turn seemed to have begun to idolize the Pride who took care of them, unaware that according to some their safety was used to control their parents.
Awali would declare himself the Ruler of the territories, and rule with an iron paw. Stifling out any possible threats to him before it became more of a whisper. Which it became easy for him to hear of any due to his Mandrill friend, and him showing respect for the predators who roamed the territories.
Why go back to the old ways? Before it was just lions over all. At least with this guy he’d at least listen to your complaints.
He would pass a law that forbade the needless harming or killing of young (which for some was ironic). Which eventually spread far from his kingdom to others. Never shall any animal experience what he did.
Unlike many of the lion prides at the time, he would also take only one mate. This was believed to be influenced from one of the animals he got lessons from, but no one can confirm it.
To keep his Pride from dying out, he even did something considered controversial at the time in allowing rogues to visit the Kingdom to help give the lionesses cubs.
With his mate he’d have three cubs. Three daughters he would give the world for, and that he wouldn't ever see them harmed.
He filled them with stories of his triumphs over the other prides. How he fought, he survived to get where he was in life. Which some attribute his stories to having gotten to his oldest daughter’s head when he split the territories between her and her sisters.
The tragedy that would follow when he retired would be something that would destroy him. And after Nyota's Kingdom is conquered any record of him is hard to come by.
it's believed he either died not long after, or even left the Kingdom to return to the Grass Walls. Either way, not many want to imagine what happened to the mental state of the King if he had witnessed Mwezi's fate.

Aaaaand that's as far back as I'm willing to go. In my mind there was for sure "Kings" before Awali. He wasn't the first cub born in the Pridelands. But he's the earliest record of someone becoming King of the Kingdom.
Which I also didn't make this the clearest, but Awali mostly communicated with predators. Helping mend hunting laws, boundaries, where and when to hunt, etc. With it suggested in some cases that he sought the help of other predators. His daughter took it a step further in communicating with herbivores.
Though another thing he helped set up was the Royal Mjuzi in the territory. Which aso helped confirm the territory as a proper Kingdom, with his lineage the Royal Bloodline.
He doesn't regret anything he did. The only regret he has is letting his daughter become so consumed with greed. But his actions and threats to the other prides is something he will never regret.
They took everything from him, and he showed them more mercy then they deserved in his mind.
I imagine he's larger then Mufasa, and very much made other lions at the time look like runts compared to him.
oh and also since I'll likely never get a chance to show it- one of the Outland lions did spare him, which was how he survived. The lion at the time was a young male (probably around Kion's age in s3) and got cold feet about killing a cub.
He had injured him already, and was unable to deliver the killing blow. Instead he left Awali for presumed dead, and returned to the heart of the fight. This lion would of course would become the head male that Awali frequently punished. Which this lions guilt and presumed regret for that night is the reason he also didn't fight Awali. He felt karma had finally came for him. Though he also did want to protect his children as well.
If it was anyone else, Awali would be dead. If he'd gotten a little bit less lucky he'd never made it to the Grass Walls. But fate was on his side.
A bit of a folk tale in present day, a cub who survived the impossible and became King? Yeah anyone would eat that up.
Also one more for tomorrow and then I’m done for the moment. I’ll probably go as far as Mohatu’s children and then stop. Mostly because everyone knows the Royal Cubs of the generations following.
