Description This is an oil painting I did back in probably March. Its about 18x24", depicting Oedipus contemplating the Sphinx's riddle. Heavily influenced by N.C. Wyeth. The only thing I'm still very unsatisfied with is the sphinx... it just seems out of place in the painting, for a variety of reasons. It was a huge breakthrough piece for me though, so I'm still very happy with it.

Were I to make suggestions on changes, I would suggest letting the tail relax and drape down the side of the rock, have the sphinx on her belly with one paw casually over the side of the rock, and replace the mane with more human hair. That said, there are very solid arguments NOT to do any of those...my suggestions have her being casual, the way you did it has her more ready to pounce, and more wild...how would a sphinx comb her human hair anyway? I would also suggest making her bigger...she killed all comers. All the suggestions aside, it feeling that the painting evokes is great. It has a great atmosphere. In particular, I like the posing of Oedipus.

This is amazing! And I don't think the Sphinx doesn't fit, to me it just seems to contrast from the rest of the painting which is perfect. It seems misplaced; alien; frightening.

Great work, along with the rest of your works! The one problem i have is in concept. I'm not sure if it varies, but from the Oedipus i read the Sphinx has an entire bust of a woman--including breasts. I always thought that that fact was interesting, and that's the only reason i bring it up. Other than that, great work.

awesome! It's the best sphynx I've seen in ages, it's amazing how the mane also looks like woman's hair

I waded through 1546 pieces of sphinx art with nothing good. Then I hit this, piece of art number 1547. Thank you.

don't be harsh on yourself bout the sphynx! It's kinda supposed to out of place anywhere, I guess, just because of what kind of creature it is. the pic's great!

Again, an excellent work. It includes the feeling of the old greek myths. Your detailed painting is just gorgorous!
