Done for my Costume Design class, Spring 2007-2008
Watercolors and ink

For our final, we were able to pick a script to analyze and design for - I choose to do Goethe's Faust, because I'm crazy like that. And, I originally choose to do it in a steampunk style, but I didn't want to do crazy robotic arms and whatnot, so it wound up being stylized Victorian/fantasy moreso than anything.

This is actually two designs in one - the main puppet is "Evil Spirit" in the Church with Margaret in the middle, surrounded, as she is pregnant and spiraling worse and worse into despair, with the aid of the spirit, of course.

This had to look like it "lived" in a Church, and my original design (which I might post eventually!) was just a fuzzy creature monstrosity, not anything nearly evil enough - you kind of wanted to hug it. So, I went back and looked at pictures of churches, and thought that the arches would work great for a base shape to build around. Then, it would be able to loom around her, and seem to be about to eat her...

Then, thinking about how this character needed to envelope Margaret, I decided to put her in the middle of the puppet, so it could be moved around her, in a swirling fashion.

Again, to the right, is an overlay showing the structural design - this one is more complicated than the Mephistopheles demon , but still something that could be created.

Oddly enough, it was the best play I have read or seen in my 3+ years in a Theatre program, probably because it's so wholly unpractical to put on - it was written to be read, not performed, I'm certain.
