Description If you are having problems still with this PDF, I'm sorry that there isn't anything more I can do to help - yes, it is an absolutely huge file to download, because it is full of photographs of many of the steps. Be patient.

You need Adobe Acrobat Reader or similar to view this PDF
Also! This is a big file (almost 40mg) compressing it was causing problems with it being downloaded, so I'm reuploading it without any compression~

Please, if you make something with this tutorial (or any of my other one's), send me a link to it - I really want to see it!

OMFG. Okay, I've been working on this on and off for the past week, and really wanted to get it posted before I leave for the weekend. Not to mention, it has been my most requested tutorial, too. And, I have to say, I'm very happy with it.

Just like my kimono pattern tutorial , this is my methodology for creating (fake) hakama for cosplay purposes.

The pictures for this were taken while I was working on my Mai from Avatar: The Last Airbender commission , and that is where I got the methodology down.

It is long, and you do have to do math. Read through the whole tutorial first, before attempting to make it, so you understand the points.

As with all of my tutorials, they're wordy, because I want you to understand everything that you are doing. I abhor tutorials that are "and then do this, and then do this, and then this, and then you're done," especially for things that are sewing based off of measurements. You need to understand what you are doing.

This also may be more advanced than some peoples sewing skills are at, I would tag this as a "MEDIUM" tutorial, in terms of difficulty. You need to know how to hem something, press something, and what words like "seam allowance" mean.

These are not historically or Kendo accurate hakama, so there is no need to point that out to me in a comment - I know, that's why the word "fake" is on the preview image!

If you do want to make more historically accurate hakama, Folkwear has a hakama pattern available, just do a google search for it. These are meant to be more dramatic and stylized for cosplay purposes, because for many applications, traditional hakama are no where near as full as they should be.

There are two different styles described in this tutorial - ones that have elastic in a waistband for comfort, and where the hakama aren't going to be seen, and ones that have side slits and ties to close them, so they look more accurate to traditional hakama (they do not, however, have a backboard - you're going to have to figure that one out on your own if you want to add one)

I would ask that you do not sell anything you make with this tutorial~

I know that there isn't any way to enforce this, but if I do see this happening, it's going to keep me from writing or making other one's, or even deleting what I have done already, okay?

I'm appealing to your conscience.

Wow, this is one of the most detailed tutorials I've found for making hakama! But I do have a question though, could this method also be used for making split-style pants hakama?

taeliac In reply to Larita [2009-10-01 00:41:50 +0000 UTC]

The tutorial covers both styles - both split hakama, unsplit, and the one's with the side slits (most of what I see for cosplay are faux hakama, which are a lot easier to do, but I covered notes on both with the side slits and without )

Hooray! I'm happy to be of help, then! I noticed that, too, that there weren't any good tutorials other than "just pleat it up" type things, or way too historically accurate one's (that weren't close to accurate in how they're sewn ) ~ I figured it was time to write something up on my own draft for them

I'm sure you've answered this before and I just missed it, but what fabric would you suggest for hakama?

I'm doing a costume from Fatal Frame and I just want to make sure the fabric has the right feel for the distressing I'm going to do to it (she's a ghost, so gotta make this nice and grimy). Any suggestions?

taeliac In reply to chibified [2009-08-21 20:55:51 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I don't think I have

I really love using heavier suiting for hakama - they just have a good drape to them, because the suiting is usually heavier than a regular cotton would be, and kind of ... well, swooshes nicely! And, I think, since they're usually poly, it'll take to distressing really nicely, if you can find white (if they need to be white, that is...) Otherwise, something like a twill is nice, but the pleats will stay pressed really well into it, which may not be the best look for a ghost, but then again, maybe not.

Either way, feel the weight of the fabric (hehe, look with your hands!) and pick something that is like a lighter-weight denim, or something that hangs nicely ~ cheaper cottons or cotton poly (like the quilting stuffs) will be too flimsy for the most part!

chibified In reply to taeliac [2009-08-22 16:30:35 +0000 UTC]

Alright! I was thinking something on the thicker side, I just wanted a second opinion.

[link]

This is the character, you can't see the pleats really well in this picture, but in the game they're pretty obvious. I think I'll go with twill since I'm not too familiar with suitings and they run a little pricier at my stores than twill does, and if I'm just burying it in the back yard and attacking it with steel wool, I'd rather not be paying a lot for it, haha.

Thank you so much for the advice!

CATastrophe519 [2009-06-27 10:25:41 +0000 UTC]

Hi,
I'm using your tutorial to make myself some "fake" hakama pants for a cosplay, my cosplay pants need to be at my hips, but they need to be a tied hakama pant style...so should I just work off using a hip inseam and still continue to do the pleating and so on, but alter the length of the tie?
Sorry if this is confusing...I can show you a reference pic of the cosplay if it helps you visualize it better!

Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to CATastrophe519 [2009-07-01 18:25:35 +0000 UTC]

I definitely think then, it would be a better idea to find your hip to floor length, and use that instead of waist to floor, and your hip (at that point) instead of the waist. Just using the inseam may not work, because you'll still need a bit of the crotch curve - otherwise, if you're not too sure on your patternmaking skills, you could make them the longer length (from your waist) and, before you add the waist ties, put them on, mark where you want them to sit, and just chop them off from there down (be sure to tack the pleats down with pins or the like, though, just in case )

I hope that makes sense!! If I was reading it wrong, a picture would definitely help

This pattern was reccomended to me by a friend, but I'm unable to download the PDF (even though I have the right software. frustrating.) It looks like a lot of people are having this problem, so I sympathize if you're sick of hearing it by now. Would there be any way to send it to me via e-mail? I only need it to complete a costume for a convention.

taeliac In reply to Tin-Lizzy [2009-06-11 18:13:01 +0000 UTC]

Actually, since I fixed it, I haven't had anyone else have a problem with it

What is your email address? I can't promise that it'll work that way, too, but if it's dA being a pain in the butt (it is a huge file, still) it should work

FINALLY A SIMPLE FREE PATTERN FOR HAKAMA!! thank you so much! i read over it and i think im going to be able to pull it off with my low sewing skills! haha im going to cosplay hanatarou from bleach so this is awesome.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to erh999 [2009-06-06 15:06:39 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem at all!! It really isn't that difficult to do, it's mostly straight lines, and if you do things in that order, it's a lot easier than regular pants (I hate sewing pants like nothing else )

I'm so happy to be of help to you I was surprised that there weren't any good, easy tutorials on hakama - most just seem to be re-posting the FolkWear pattern for hakama, which is tricky to follow (even for me!), but nothing really simple for beginners So... yeah! I made one

I really hope your costume goes well! If you get stuck or anything, lemme know - I've done a ton of Bleach outfits, and I'll do my best to help you out!
