Description You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open this file, as it's a PDF. You can download it here .

Please, if you or Download, please leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Here is a tutorial that I've meant to do for a while now, but really pushed to have finished before school started.

This is basically how I draft my kimono/yukata and faki-mono outfits (flip through my gallery for examples of some of them). A lot of people seem to have problems with them, and I had a lot of requests for this tutorial, so I hope you all appreciate the 8 hours it took to do this (and in a PDF, no less!)

This is really detailed, so that if you're new to sewing, you can follow it! If ~kellin could follow it, I have no doubt anyone can do this! So give it a try!!

I tried to document every step that you need to do as clearly as possible, so you shouldn't get lost! With lots and lots of technical illustrations!

You may also find my Pre Tied Obi Tutorial [link] useful in addition to this one, so check it out!

I think there could still be a few spelling/gramatical errors floating in this, so I'm sorry about those! Also, this is the first time I've made a PDF, so please be kind and let me know if there are any issues - I've checked and re-checked it through, but if I did something weird, please let me know. I'm still new to using InDesign (most of the work was done in Illustrator) so there may be some issues there

I would ask that you do not sell anything you make with this tutorial. I know that there isn't a way to enforce this, so I'm appealing to your conscience.

Any questions? Just ask! I'm always glad to answer!

If you make something from this tutorial, throw me a link so I can see! That's the reason why I do tutorials, to see what other people can come up with!!

I tried to go to your web site listed at the top of the page (beanime.com) but it said the domain was for sale. Did you change your web site?

I'm sorry!

I actually haven't been able to make any cosplay or stuff like that any more, so I just let the domains go. I've been meaning to update all of my deviations, but haven't had a chance Since I moved to Japan, fabric (and space!) is really expensive, I didn't think anyone would want to commission me for anything!

Wow! Congratulations on your move to Japan! My son is planning to go there in a year or two to teach English, and is currently getting his TEFL certificate. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you are doing over there, and (in spite of your not doing it any more for commissions) REALLY appreciate the tutorial. Thanks loads!

Say if I am trying to make this, but a sleeveless version, are there any changes to the making of the main body of the kimono?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to DuhPockyNinja [2016-05-04 15:46:34 +0000 UTC]

There really shouldn't be. Before you finish the arm holes, though, try it on and see if they're too long for what you're wanting it to look like.

For example, it may hang close to a tshirt in length over the edge of your shoulder, so if it needs to be shorter, mark it with a water soluble pen or chalk to where you want it to be. Pin it back, even, with safety pins before you cut it just to be sure it'll work for your outfit! But otherwise, nope, no major changes!

You probably explained this in the tutorial, and I just didn't understand it, but I have a question pertaining to the notches cut in the sleeves: How deep in do you cut the notches, and how wide should they be at their bases (the widest points)?

nymphina [2016-03-07 08:46:31 +0000 UTC]

Is this for male of female? Β
I dont know much about Yukatas and Kimonos but I do think theres a female and male version.. something about the sleeves being shorter for males?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to nymphina [2016-03-09 07:05:22 +0000 UTC]

It kind of depends. For yukata, they're actually both about the same length - I have a couple laying around I just looked at, and the men's is almost the same length as the women's, and the difference may be in size or age of the garment. The real difference is women's are open on the inner sleeve part, and men's aren't, but this tutorial is more for a generic one, and truthfully, leaving it closed both prevents accidental slips, and is just easier to do.

If you mean full on kimono, then men's and women's sometimes vary - for shorter sleeved styles, they're both nearly the same, again, but young women wear something called a "furisode," which has the incredibly long sleeves. Those are only worn by young, unmarried women, so that's definitely a case of them being different lengths!

The other piece that's a little different is a men's juban, a more popular summer outfit (although a lot of girls wear them, too), which is a kimono top and a pair of shorts with it. Those have straight sleeves instead of the hanging boxes like yukata, and no obi, or just a sash tied around the middle versus a folded/tied obi.

I do not understand what is meant in step 6: "cut two or three widths of fabric 8"-10" long". That means i need to cut 2 or 3 fabric pieces that are 45" long and 8-10" wide? Thanks!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Mrpaws [2015-05-21 07:54:18 +0000 UTC]

Yep! Just use the width the fabric comes in (usually, 45" or 55" or 60"), and cut strips of it about 8" to 10" wide, so, like this if it makes more sense!

taeliac In reply to SoulsOfTearDrops [2014-12-17 01:18:36 +0000 UTC]

That's a little trickier to make, because the hem flares out at the bottom. However, one way you could try it is to cut it a bit longer and cut those points into it. So think instead of the bottom being straight like this __ you cut it in a V shape to get the points :3 that may work for you!

I'm going to try this pattern for my next cosplay for which I need a Yukata. This is the first understandable tutorial I found that doesn't need to sew on the shoulder lines and helps to get the correct meassurements. I just have to convert the measurements to cm for reference. Β
