I think Kansas suffered a lot of image damage at the hands of that stupid movie. (We all know the one, and I think we can all agree that, despite its theatrical charm, it was a hokey, syrup-style reduced impression of the book on which it was based.) Even today, the first thing most people think of when they think of Kansas, especially those who have never been to Kansas, is that flat studio set with a matte background. Kansas fields roll and have their own scenic beauty. Granted, we have no mountains. (And I don't know why we don't have test tracks to compete with the NΓΌrburgring and Ehra-Lessien in Germany.) And we have no coastline. (Though I think we could support the world's largest inland oceanic aquarium.) But we're not just dust from KC to Liberal. I think "Russia" would find precisely what he's looking for in Kansas. Sorry, just home state pride, so to speak. Uhm... Purdy picture. I likes it.

I think my original impression of Kansas comes from my childhood, when the only time we ventured into the state was on the way between Colorado and the Midwest. So most of what I've seen of it is what's within 5 miles of the freeway or thereabouts. xD
I'll agree with you on the beauty part, though. It may have been boring to 5-year-old me, but now I just find something really relaxing about the rolling hills and the long lonesome roads.

Ahh, well, eastern Colorado is quite flat, and dusty, being mostly desert. I forget the impressive term my Earth Science teacher had our class repeat over and over to explain the effect, but it's that whole coast-mountain-desert-plains pattern that often occurs due to the rainfall and drying out that happens as the air is pushed up and over the mountains. Also most of Kansas was scarred by the glacial slide that occurred during Ice Age thaws, equating to the hills we have today. Aaand if I didn't sound like a total geek before, I'm sure I sound like a full on dweeb now.
My grandparents used to take we grandkids who were willing to Colorado each summer. We'd spend a few days around Colorado Springs, in a place called Buffalo Pass, if you know it, then we'd head over to Montevista, where family friends lived, then up to the Survival and Wilderness Skills camp that their friends owned to perform demonstrations for them. Grandpa taught flint-napping (making knives, arrowheads, and other tools out of sharp rocks) and when we kids were old enough, we helped demonstrate and tutor Grandpa's classes.
Heading out to Colorado, though, it was always the flattest land I'd ever seen from about the tiny bump that was Kanorado until about halfway across the state when Pike's Peak would pop up on the horizon.

I lived in Kansas for a large portion of my childhood, so I knew all those things liek state birds and flowers and animals of Kansas, and when I moved to Missouri and everyone else knew the state bird and flower of Missouri (still don't know those) all I could do was say 'in Kansas it's a sunflower...'

I like this. The sunflowers make this piece look so pleasant. But why does old Russia disapprove of such nice flowers. But there's something else that strange. Your piece looked as if it was glowing. I don't know if that was intentional or not but that's a 5 in my book.
