When a monster absorbs a human soul, they become very powerful, or "mega", as you said. Since ASRIEL absorbed the soul, he gained this power.
if your thinking of the game, remember he said he wasn't using his full power. This might mean he is using only the power of one soul, as to explain his power in the comic.
