Description
The Marathon Class MCT is a rugged ship, built for moving important cargo through dangerous space, and getting it to its destination quickly and in one piece. The 'modular' part of the name refers to how the ship consists of a front end cockpit, and a back end with crew quarters and facilities, as well as the engine room. The two sections separate, and the individual cargo modules are placed in between. Seen here with four cargo modules, the ship is able to carry as many as ten at a time. Each cargo module has attachment points for two cargo pods, and one mounted fixture. The mounted fixtures are also modular, and could be a turbolaser turret, a missile pod, a sensor range booster or jammer, or something custom built. It carries a crew of 6 - 10, and can carry passengers if one or more of the cargo pods is converted for living in.The ship is 44 meters long in its current configuration, with each cargo pod adding 6 meters, giving this configuration a length of 68 meters. One main engine provides the primary drive propulsion, while four secondary boosters give the ship a decent top speed. It features a portside airlock for docking, and in case it needs to haul something that wouldn't fit in a cargo pod, it has four tethers in the back for towing things like large pieces of space debris. It is currently fitted with two turbolaser turrets, and two missile pods.
About the model. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it actually come apart into the various segments I mentioned above, though the individual cargo pods do separate. I hope to find a way to make it work like that eventually, but this will do for now. This was sort of a last-minute-panic build that I did last night so I'd have something to enter in the contest that ends today over at LegoFanClub. Took me about seven hours, though part of that was spent trying to make a boat, which I've determined I cannot do. The design was inspired by a few things. Partly a drawing a friend of mine showed me, partly the Serenity, and partly this cargo ship that hangs around Babylon 5 sometimes. www.celestiamotherlode.net/cat⦠It's not to scale with any of my other ships, though it might be close to scale with some of the Lego Star Wars Minis. The scale here is 1 stud to 1 meter.

Yeah, that's pretty much all the ones I have.Β This is the set I got them from: www.brickset.com/detail/?set=4β¦ It's got about 36 of them in it.Β It's 5 years old though, so you might have trouble finding it.Β

I've always found a decent price for Lego is about $10 for 100 pieces.Β This thing is $70 for almost 1300 pieces.Β It's a bit pricey, yes, but worth it if you can.

$300??Β It says $69.99, US.Β Oh wait, you're talking about the ebay thing.Β Yeah.... I'd buy it somewhere else..Β Ebay is really expensive.Β There are a lot of sites out there that sell Lego.Β Unfortunately I don't know them.

yeah not many sell them.
How widespread the LEGO there on the new continent?

Well, most major stores have it.Β It's quite popular, I'd say.Β I'm trying to get it to not be widespread, but to have it all right here in my room.Β

Addictive, isn't it? I have been trying for years to build some of those ships, especially the Omega-Class Destroyers and a Narn battlecruiser, but they're both so hard to get right. Maybe someday...
Also, I've always thought that Garibaldi from B5 would have gotten along great with Gunnery Sergeant Stacker from Halo Oh, the asses they would kick...

I've been wanting to make an Omega-Class Destroyer too.Β It would be about 50 studs long, at scale..Β I also want to make one of those Minbari Sharlin Cruisers, which would be a bit shorter, but half again as tall as the Omega is long.Β Here's a question I've been considering..Β What would be the best way to build Babylon 5's main round part?Β It's 840 meters in diameter at the widest, which means about 25 studs, less a bit.Β I've got a couple ideas in mind, but I want to hear a fresh perspective.

Well, the first thing I'd go for is click-joints. Barring that, I'd probably try to layer plates like how the hull of this beauty is made: www.flickr.com/photos/legomons⦠to make four curved sections, then stick them together at the edges with some piece that has dots on the sides.
I find it really hard to even imaging a Sharlin War-Cruiser in Lego, the things are so organic that I dunno if it can be done. Ironically I think a Vorlon ship would be easier, since Lego's made squids before that look a lot like them.

Oh, so that's where all the grey Lego went.. Lol. Yeah, that might work, but it would take a lot of parts.Β It would probably be the strongest way though.Β I was thinking of something like this 2.bp.blogspot.com/_mT3LPScV_sgβ¦ with some structural reinforcement across the middle. Also, maybe just click joints like you said, or clip joints like in the most recent Millennium Falcon.Β Then it would be a matter of building it out and putting plates on it, like this farm3.static.flickr.com/2615/3β¦ But obviously cylindrical, not spherical. Of course, you could also use something like this.. a248.e.akamai.net/cache.lego.cβ¦
I did a search for a Lego Sharlin, and I got a screenshot of the ship from District 9.Β I guess it hasn't been done before, at least not well.Β Now I want to...Β I'd need more blue though.

Yeah, any of those methods would work but they're all pretty parts intensive- either they require pretty rare parts, or too many of them. If you think you can pull it off, though, then go for it.
The only Sharlin cruiser I could find in Lego was this one: farm1.staticflickr.com/98/2108β¦ So you don't really have any competitoon in that category. On the other hand, I did discover that the Whitestar farm1.static.flickr.com/87/273β¦ the Hyperion-class farm7.static.flickr.com/6149/6β¦ and the B5 station itself farm9.staticflickr.com/8104/85β¦ have, in fact, been done (though the Whitestar is looking a little... colorless).

Yeah, I think pretty much any ship from B5 would require me to get an income and buy parts specifically for it.Β And Babylon 5 itself, on the scale I'm using, well...Β 8454 meters means 248.6 studs, means 1.98 meters.Β That's ...still a bit out of my league.Β I think I'm going to keep thinking about how I'll try to make the Protector though.
