paper wasps FASCINATING!! Β These guys aren't aggressive towards people generally, but that nest will just get bigger and more problematic if allowed to stay there. Β It might be a good idea to just move them to another "protected" area....a place like where they are now but where they can continue doing their good deeds without causing terror at the mere sight of them ha ha!

If you can find a nice place in the woods away from the house for them, they will continue being awesome and taking out fun things like mosquitoes and flys and such

I actually haven't decided exactly what to do yet. Reading about them seems they are good for the environment and don't attack unless one tries to mess with their nest.

goes against what your mind is telling you doesn't it? Β Wasps LOOK dangerous and horrid, but are actually much nicer than the honey bee

Do you have any sheltered woods nearby?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tailgun2009 In reply to Mattsma [2013-08-18 16:15:58 +0000 UTC]

There are batches of woods around, most have been removed for new housing

So even trying to transplant them there would be almost a waste of time! Β I guess you have new neighbors adding on to your house then

Hell I wouldn't have even taken the picture........I would have seen, sprayed and got rid of that mess in a heartbeat......Those suckers can put a hurting on you and they attack for no reason.

RHARIZONA [2013-08-11 17:01:29 +0000 UTC]

These are obviously some kind of wasps.
It said on a German website about wasps that there are different kinds of which there are calm ones - the ones with the visible nests.Β

It's also said that wasps will only live in the same place for up to 6 months (the colony will die in autumn). They won't come back.Β

Therefore it's recommended NOT to kill them.

Also interesting: There are some kinds of wasps that are already endangered and therefore forbidden to kill.

If you want to hear my personal opinion: Wait and look whether they do any harm. Maybe have a friend with knowledge come over and try to identify the exact species. If there is anyone living around the direct area who is allergic to them (which I doubt), have them removed. Otherwise tolerate them and be thankful for their great job on the ecosystem (i.e.: they kill vermins).

Please excuse my poor English - That's an unusual topic to talk about

Greedings from Germany and good luck.

grlgeorge In reply to gigi50 [2013-08-11 13:46:03 +0000 UTC]

yes, it is best to kill them at dusk or dawn...when they are all back on the nest. and make sure to spray the entire nest. top, bottom, sides....because the like to hang out on the backside also......(closest to the wall)

gigi50 In reply to grlgeorge [2013-08-11 13:58:38 +0000 UTC]

Agreed, my hubby had to a few time at previous home in forest, he wore a full body suit and head gear

it was a giant nest and our kids were small, and to make sure they wouldn't attack of course he did at dusk

and also sent the spray through a long pipe it worked perfectly Which I would of video taped it

Β a good laugh at the same time

Yellow Jackets.
Yes, kill them...kill them all. and knock down the nest when you've killed them, or those white spots(eggs) will keep hatching out new ones. Know it down and crush it.......
Unlike bees, which pollinate things and produce honey, yellow jackets have no redeeming wualities.

CaveCritter In reply to Tailgun2009 [2013-08-11 18:06:39 +0000 UTC]

Those aren't yellow jackets, those are paper wasps. Yellow jackets are extremely aggressive, while paper wasps will only attack if you threaten their home. They also get rid of ants. They are also a know pollinator, and kill harmful bugs and pests and whatnot. Tailgun, I would personally recommend you dont kill them as its unnecessary as they won't bother you and are helpful to the ecosystemΒ
