I've made Mender quite the sensitve character and not just because the Void and his long isolation is giving him hell. He's been a child of the war and that left quite a few marks on him... also those you can not see.
I won't give any details (yet) about how and what exactly happened to him, but you're free to guess by what the upper row of panels... in fact this whole page tells you.

So Gaster's got PTSD from the war? Man, the guy really hasn't had an easy life.
But what about those dwelling in the present? Two horrible accidents in a row happen around Gen, first the stairs now the lift... maybe she should remain on flat ground for a while.

Yes, in a way. He never actively fought in the war as a soldier (he simply was too young), but he still is a victim of the war and child of this time and that left more than one impact on him. And it forced him to do things he will never forget and that has formed part of his personality and social behavior as well.
As for Gen.... yeah, she really should. Although... maybe not.

Oh! We see a bit glimpse of Gaster's past and what happened to him and humans a bit...or implications that they have hurt him/or his friends...poor Gaster
I am curious though if this gets addressed more and the story goes deeper into his life! So far love the scenes how he calms down slowly! You are a strong man Gaster!!

Yeah, you are on the right way here. I kept it a bit vague in here, so you can come up with your own ideas, but Gaster himself will explain the meaning of these memories during the story. The pre-war time is an important element of Mendertale as well, so be sure there will be more references and lore about it.
