Description This piece made me sad... I rendered it twice, once for about 3 hours, the second for twelve. The difference between the two? The twelve hour one was a little brighter. Oh well, Live and learn. The color was blue, but I used photoshop to invert it. I decided that it gave it a more cartographical look and used colors that I don't often use.
The name comes from the book "Summerland", by Michael Chabon.

I believe that this piece would look pretty cool if someone were to make it have a paper-like texture and perhaps add some mapish stuff to it (compass rose, key, random notes, etc). So, I have put the original picture (2520x1575) in a zip file for you all to play with Just click download. If you do use it, let me know and I'll add a link to it here (plus, I want to see it )

The subtle shadings are what particularly appeals to me. Very nice piece.

Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it

On a random note, I see that you play Go. I haven't really played it--I've only tried it against a computer on a 9x9 board (which I always lose at), but I've become rather fascinated with the game. Do you have any advice that you could offer to a newcomer such as myself?

There are some great go resources on the internet.
I don't know if you are familiar with any of these...

Sensei's Library (a go wiki) [link]
Kiseido Go Server (KGS) (you can play other people online) [link]
And of course the American Go Association (I see you are in the US) [link]

If you are anywhere near a club there is nothing like the feedback you get from playing real players. I have found go a very rewarding game to pursue. It is a wonderful combination of simple forms and subtle combinations.

I hope this is useful, and I am always happy to talk more about it.

So i favorited this a bit back, I caught it again, I was wondering how you came to the lines that you made, were you just swinging the circle tool however you wanted? or was there some method?

I would love to answer your question, but I've lost my flame files I know I used the rectangle transform, but I can't remember anything beyond that.

You're right AJ, it does have a very cartographical look to it
First thing I thought was, "is that some kind of map?"
I wonder where it leads to

talin4 In reply to Hadarniel [2008-04-29 04:34:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, due to the multi-spacial, non-euclidian logic involved, the location to which it leads lies in an area with 8.8975 dimensions (hehehe, fractal humor). So, in order to survive the chaos involved (more fractal humor ), one must roll up the map and hold it out in front as if it were a sword. However, one must be constantly reading the map so as not to get lost... It's a catch-22.
lol, I'm glad you thought of a map as well

Now that's one troublesome map
Whoever did it didn't want anybody to understand it

Aye indeed. As a matter of fact, the map's maker is one of only people that can use it. A distant cousin of the map's maker, and a completely unrelated football player are the only other two that can read it. Apparently at the end of the map's path, there is a taco shop. But you know what? They are REALLY GOOD tacos. Between the three of them, they run a monopoly on transportation to the said taco shop. Fortunately, their prices are only slightly below ridiculous... for the moment.

To a Taco Place??

Yes, a really good Taco Place. So good, that whenever you speak about it, even the words you actually speak have to be in italics. That's why not to many people can talk about it... they fear the wrath of the MDNELLLA. That is, the Multi Dimentional Non-Euclidian Logic Location Lawyers Association. You see, if you talk about it with italics, you get sued... So, MDNELLLA is on the way to your door right now. Better start planning a defense for you case!

Hehehe, I like making stuff up about the simplest of things

That's cool I really like it. I'd like to mess around with it, just to see what I could do. Not sure if I'll have time though. I'm taking the SAT tomorrow, so I'm not sure what my weekend will look like with homework and what not.

This piece has a nice antique style to it. I really like how the dark inside area almost looks like it forms a flower. My only advice to you is to add more shades throughout the piece. The cool patterns you have going on almost get lost with each other because the colours are almost too identical. Do like you did for the center and add more dark spots. It will help make the other areas stand out and it will give a nice illusion of depth as well.

But despite this I still it

Yes, I completely agree with the need for different shadings. I've experimented with the previously mentioned idea of giving it a more paper like look. This helped a little, but I haven't been completely satisfied with it yet.

Don't worry!! I'm sure you will find a way to have it like you want it. That's the beauty of art; art's never finished, it's abandoned ^^, so until you abandon it, you can screw around with it as much as you want !

talin4 In reply to purplezoni [2008-03-01 03:34:35 +0000 UTC]

That's an interesting way to put it lol. By the way, I forgot to say thanks for the fav. So, thank you!
While experimenting with the paper texture, I found that it still seemed to be missing some things, particularly points of interest in the upper right portion of the picture. I think I'll probably experiment with making a fractal compass rose... eventually. *insert witty remark about procrastination here... later*

Your welcome, and good luck with the experimentation idea; sounds like it will turn out cool if successful!!
