Well, this took forever, and it could have been refined further, but I'm going to let it go for now, so I can focus on other projects. This was one of those scenes that I deem crucial in properly understanding Akarai as a character, but never had the confidence to tackle such a daring composition. Well here it is now, and it was a lot of fun.

For a bit of context, the kitsune in my setting do not grow physical tails as they age, but spectral "tails" each of which represents a fragment of their consciousness, as well as being their preferred medium for channeling magic. Akarai is unique in his homeland for having shades that are inherently charged with electricity. This grants him an incredible affinity for lightning, but just about impedes him from learning any other form of magic.

Anyway, here's a bit of dialogue as way of rationalising the particular spelling of the title...

After the battle:
When first the whelp strode towards us with brazen confidence and a blade no kitsune his size should be able to wield, we laughed. "Who is this commander who brings an army, then decides to fight the battle alone?" we cried. We did not even deign ready our shades.
But when this pup, a mere three tails old, unleashed his shades... It was as if the hounds of the Thundergod had came for our souls.

Before the battle:
"The preparations are well under way, Lord Akarai and the banners you requested have been finished. It would have been perfect, were it not for one particularly damaging flaw."

"Prithee, what might that be, Captain Fuyumori?"

"On the banner that reads "Lightning god's wolf" you misspelled "lightning."

"...That's just how I spell it?"

"If your Lordship says so..."
