Again, Niyol woke with a start, knocking his pillow of the hammock as he bolted upright, shaking his
head. For three nights now, the same thing has been happening - a great red and black stallion comes
to him.... and speaks. But, what the noble creature says, he can never remember.... or can never
understand.... which of those it was he could never tell.

Huffing, the tired and rather frustrated youth slid out of his hammock, nearly sinking down to his knees
from the soreness of his legs and everything else from the bull he had been dared to ride the day before.
Groaning, he reached for his boots, and not even stopping as he walked across the loft, tried to slip
them on.... that didn't turn out so well, as he nearly ended up tumbling down the ladder leading to the
rest of the barn below. Luckily, he managed to pull both on without breaking any bones and headed down,
or rather, slid down, the ladder, taking his bow and fur vest with him. Never knew when a predator might
attack, and the air was getting colder as winter neared.

Most of the horses that were kept stabled in the barn at night slept on or minded their own business, but
a couple, such as his Loph mare and one of the kelpies, rose their heads up to nicker at him as he passed
by, the youth hoping that a walk outside at night would help him get to where he can actually sleep again.

After exiting the barn, the Navajo youth jumped the fence and made his way to the pasture.

A strong wind was blowing, and in the distance, flashes of lightning could be seen dancing around a huge
thunderhead.... no doubt the brewing storm would be upon them in a few hours.

For two hours he walked, enjoying the peace and quiet that was broken on occasion by deep rolling
thunder from afar. Above him still the stars could be seen, as the clouds hadn't reached the point above
the ranch yet.

Yawning, he headed towards the rise not to far away; still groggy, but knowing he'd be unable to sleep
with that stallion trampling all through his........ head.....

-So, you have finally answered my call.-

Okay, now.... either he was dreaming still.... or that stallion was right in front of him, standing on the
rise he had been walking towards. He... was certain that there had been no horse there before... and he
had not heard any hoofbeats..... yet now it stood before him, it's red mane whipping around in the strong wind.

-You know what I am.- It was not a question, but a statement.

Unable to do much else, he nodded.

-I have chosen you, Niyol, to be my rider. Complete the task I set before you, and I will be your partner...
your friend.... your guide, for as long as you shall live. But then, you already know this, do you not?-

Again, he nodded; not daring to speak out of reverence for the creature in front of him.

-You are a tracker; there is nothing, not print from the paw nor mark from a hoof that you cannot follow, so
I challenge you - follow me. Track me, where ever I may go, even to the ends of the Earth. If you can stand
before me once again in three weeks time, then you have earned the right to be called a rider of the Elmas Zo.-

-Then, and only then, shall you learn my name.-

And just like that, the huge stallion whirled and galloped off, leaving him alone, standing in awestruck stupor
until the first raindrops started pattering against the ground, and the first light of the new dawn creeped
up on the horizon. A few more moments he stood, then he bolted off back to the ranch house, determined
to wake up his best friend, spill the news, and get his things together. He was going to be away from home
for a long while....
