Gorgeous! That's some incredibly fine work... it looks fragile, especially the lower half... excellent design, it seems faithfully Egyptian yet original as well

It is fragile. I usually make cast stone limited editions of my major (read time consuming) carvings. But I'm afraid that the points would break off of the castings. I may, some day get arround to making a cross stitch version, in bright colors. At least that is the plan.
Anyway, I'm glad you like him.

Do you cast those in plaster? I heard that for really fine details, some artists use dental casting material... I don't know if that would be less damaging to the piece... Also, you might want to inquire what method restorators use when they take casts... it would be a shame to damage such beautiful and intricate carvings, but castings are definitely a great idea... you could even look into more of a mass production so that more people could enjoy your wonderful art... sorry for rambling just tossing some ideas your way

I make latex molds, because they peel cleanly off the finished wood surfaces. I should experiment with silicon molds, but I am afraid that the mold release will mess with the polyurethane.
When I cast them, I use a material called Vatican stone. It is a cement like material, with a sand aggregate that makes it look more like stone. Then I finish the castings with the same polyurethane I use on the wood.
As for rambling , I can talk your ear off. No need to apologize.

This is spectacular. I love the symmetry of it, and how graceful the point of the two wing feathers at the top is. Something about it is just really marvelous to look at - I also love the spiral in the middle of the sun. And the branch-things he's holding. And the detail of the feathers is amazing.
Oh, and the fact that the background looks like a sky full of stars is really neat and symbolic.

Wow, um. The background is a coincidence, it is just the table drape I use at some of my shows. But I'm glad you like the rest of it. I'm (relatively) speechless. Thanks!

This is absolutely breathtaking! What did you use to carve it? How long did it take?

I used a combination of wood carving chisels and x-acto knives.
As for how long it took, that is hard to say. I'm a bit of a gadfly, moving from project to project, so the big ones can take years to complete, even though the actual work can be measured in hours. A guess, admittedly an educated one, is about 150 hours. It would be less, except that the wood on this piece is very hard, which is how I got away with all those points.
I'm glad you like it. Thanks.
