Description
Denell Henderson, a Twin Groves, Ark. native, guides his horse around a curve during the relay race portion of the 30th annual Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo (BPIR) at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md., Sep. 21, 2014. The relay is a friendly competition between local equestrian teams and nationwide rodeo competitors like Henderson. BPIR is recognized as the only black traveling rodeo and was created to educate people about the history of the black cowboys and the development of the West. (Photo by Kristina Truluck)Shooting high-speed events indoors without a flash was an interesting challenge, especially with a body that doesn't handle low light situations well. Lesson learned for next year!

Thanks! I'm surprised it came out so well since my 7D doesn't like having the ISO pushed so high.

The curb or kerb is a very hard horse-gear in the soft mouth of a horse, it works with leverage. Horses get often wound mouths by it and unfortunatley horses can't show pain. In my opinion it shouldn't be used, there are better, more soft horse-gears to guide. Imagine you had to wear such an iron in your mouth and somebody would pull it again and again...
Well, it's just because I really love horses, they are wonderful animals and I feel much sympathy for them.

Nice shot. You can feel the turning force under the horses hooves.

Superb, Kristina. Consider it nominated for a DD. You nailed the aperture and composition.
Tilting a photograph, like centering the subject, should never be done unless it must be done. Perfect.
Blessings,
Steve

Thanks, Steve! Shooting speed events indoors where flash is strongly discouraged was definitely a challenge. My 7D wasn't liking me pushing it to ISO 4,000.
Shots framing the horse's movement usually look good, so I took a chance with some of the relay races and barrel runs.

Practice makes progress!
V kept encouraging me to climb up on the fence with her, but my best shots are always from the ground. I'm glad I insisted on dropping for this round.

Yep, just a friendly competition. You can tell by the easy goin' look on that cowboy's face.
My father loved rodeo. Didn't like horses but loved rodeo. We got box seats next to the bull chutes at the N.M. State Fair every year.
Dad's family raised mules and horses for the Army in Kansas during the twenties and thirties. He joined the Army Air Corp, went to school and became a technical writer for Boeing Aircraft and Sandia Labs. Never had to look at the north end of a south bound mule again. Except at the rodeo.
Beautiful shot, great angle and focus.

Amazing job at catching that lean! You can really feel the energy of both horse and rider when they curve at such a dynamic angle! Especially love the concentrated expression of the horse, it's a really powerful capture you got.

Do it! I think there's some that go on in VA. Reining is starting to get popular in the Fredericksburg area...or one of the towns that starts with 'F'. It's better than rodeo.

I typed too fast - reined cow horse. Though the spins and sliding stops in reining are awesome to watch. It shows the horse working with cattle and how intelligent the horses are in separating the animal you need from the herd with little interference from their rider.
Here's a quick video.

Get out of that damn city!
I think there's a few ranches close to the mountains in VA/MD, I'll have to kidnap you and the kids one of these summers. Campfires, ponies, cattle, cabins...it's heaven.

Will there be blindfolds and tieing up? I'm not much a fan of being tied up. So lets leave that out, but definitely chloroform me and drag me into the van while playing the ice cream truck music.
