Description Finally uploading my latest submissions for EqD's NATG, starting with the third day's "pony holding an object" prompt. From the beginning, I wanted something musical, but I didn't want to lump Octavia on a pretty background and call it a day.

Thus, Discord as a jazz musician came into existence. I took the fan idea of "Discord the artist" and ran with it in a musical direction; jazz, the sax, and sunglasses followed suit, with Octavia subtly fulfilling the prompt's requirement. In Paint Tool Sai, I used linework layers and the Fill Bucket for the characters, while I played around with the Marker tool (sans variable line density) to make the art deco-inspired background.

If there's one thing I hate about this image, it's my depiction of the saxophone. I'm no musician, so all those brass bits and pieces make no artistic sense to me. I would've just drawn the thing without those parts, but it turns out they're the only characteristics that keep a saxophone from looking like a boring ol' horn.

Oh wow, this is kind of exactly what I need for the cover of a song I'd like to do. Request to use most of the elements of this image?

Sure, man, go crazy! I appreciate that you asked for permission to use this picture, even though it's only mine in execution...

Let me know if dA's copy of the picture gives you trouble; I still have the source file, so I can modify the final product depending on how you want to use it. Good luck!

Sorry for the really, REALLY late reply, but I just wanted to say that you're very welcome. I'm definitely honored to see my work complimenting the already amazing stuff this fandom creates. I applaud your skills at "rhyming with rhythm", and I'll do my best to help out if you ever need anything else.

I could see Discord playing the sax.

During production, I couldn't decide between jazz and abstract painting. In the end, Octavia tipped the scales in music's favor, just 'cuz her design and fanon personality are recognizable enough to comedically contrast with those of Discord.

Poor Octavia. I bet Discord can be a ... difficult musician to conduct.
I think that background is about the best way to graphically capture the start of an epic sax solo.

It's that sort of conflict of interests that set me towards making the picture as good as possible. It's easy to juxtapose two different characters participating in a specific situation, but to suggest an ongoing narrative a la Norman Rockwell really takes skill. I hope to get there someday.

And hey, I'm glad I did something right regarding a background without a setting! I'm no synaesthesia specialist, but you can bet I'll play around with the visual effect in future works.
