"John ?"

Sherlock looked quietly at the box John's just put on his knees. The former military looked rather pleased by his little surprise and seemed to be waiting for Sherlock to open the "present".

"What is it ?
- Something I couldn't help but buy."

The sleuth flinched a little as he felt the bottom of the box moving a little under what seemed to be footsteps. His eyes went fast from his friend to the "gift" and he couldn't help but being a bit incredulous about all this.

"And in what honor ?
- Just... Like that, you know..
- Actually, I don't. I've never understood why people always need to embarass themselves with such stupid things as presents. It always demands something in return and we don't feel free about... 'offering'. It's always 'giving back' and...
- Shut up, Sherlock and just open up !"

John was... excited. A big smile was painted over his face and Sherlock could see sparkles in his blue eyes. With a sigh, he lifted the cap of the box... to find a little puppy looking at him, his little pink tongue out of his mouth.

"Good Lord, John ! What have you brought ?" asked Sherlock, a bit lost.
"Isn't he cute ? I thought he could bring some life and joy in our flat. He was looking at me so intensely... I couldn't leave him behind a glass !
- But... But it's a dog !
- Good point. So ?"

John was actually really happy about... About something as useless as an animal. Sherlock didn't understand why they should burden themselves with... with this. The dog suddenly jumped out of the cardboard box he was trapped in to lick Sherlock's face ; Sherlock who immediatly jumped on his feet and took the puppy in his hands to keep it as far as possible from any parcel of his body he could touch. Irritated, he looked angrily at the animal's eyes which started to agitate his tail furiously. John let a laugh escape between the fingers of the hand he had put on his mouth.

"Hm... I think he likes you, Sherlock."

The sleuth frowned a little, his eyes still in the dog's.

Well, at least, he'd got another volunteer for his experiments
