Description A still life I did with charcoal, black pen, and gold ink on bristol board for my portfolio (maybe). Good lord, realism is so hard
Criticism is VERY welcome, because I'm pretty new to this type of art. Please help me improve v_v
How was everybody's New Year's?

the french horn is BEAUTIFUL!

i do have to agree with the person who commented about the ambiguous looking oil, but other than that. daNG, MAN.

also the reflection of the body of the horn on the wine bottle looks like an ear and it is supREMELY amusing

Yeah, something needs to happen about that oil.
Thank you! Haha I just noticed about the ear :^D

Hi, this is magnificent. I'm curious as to why you decided to add the crown differently above Buddha's head? I like it better that way maybe that's simply why you did it.

Thank you!
Welp, I was trying to celebrate all the different cultures that mix together in my community, so I thought it would be appropriate to put a Western-style crown on Buddha's head. I did it in an unrealistic style to emphasize it along with the music but I don't know if it worked or not, ahaha.

I find it as the focus of your piece, because it lacks dimension - unlike the rest of the piece. Kind of like you pasted a gold star For your intention of realism, I find it draws away from it. But regarding the typical style you're known for (or at least how I always view your work), it suits the 'you' in this piece very well. Perhaps a gold-flaked frame would go well? Who knows, don't know unless you experiment (but don't make anything permanent until you love it!)

I love so much how you approached this! You have tons of talent. If anything, I would focus even more on the positive and negative shape relationship of objects, and how forshortening plays a role in things. For example, I am not convinced that the tuba head is the right size or shape, and that is causing the sense of space to flatten. Try to look at the angles that make up the positive and negative spaces like that, and this will help you get even more exact Finally, I would also pay more attention to how texture conveys what material the object is. The glass bottle on the farthest left, for example, looks like it's some sort of murky substance with mist coming off it instead of a clearer substance with a clear line between it and the glass itself.

Hope this helps! Let me know if any of what I said is confusing, and I'll try to find a better way to say it (for all I know, I could be spewing nonsense haha). Regardless, love this! Beyond impressed with this, and I'm sure all the colleges you apply to will be as well.

Thank you! And thanks for actually critiquing me, it's very useful.
It's a French horn, not a tuba -- but I think you're right that I drew the bell too big. And that's true facts about the olive oil looking all misty. I was trying to draw these weird warped reflections in the bottle, but it didn't work out so well.... welp.
Thanks :^)

You're very welcome! Glad itΒ helped.Β Wow, I feel very silly calling it a tuba...I knew it wasn't a tuba, but I forgot it was called a French horn. Whoops! Regardless, keep drawing and practicing. You can only get better from here

Nice stuff. I'm glad you're doing more drawing from life. I like the texture and the well-observed perspective. I think the final product could benefit from some of the reds and oranges in the photos; it's looking a little flat.Β

I really love this, Noah. I know you usually do less realistic things, so I found the Buddha and the lower left part more compelling. What I like is the shading and how detailed it is. The horn and wine bottle reflections are more abstract and less consistent with the rest of the drawing. I think I would have liked it without the blank in pen better, if you're going for the whole realism deal. Still, amazing as always.

Tschaikowski (or Tchaikovsky) the Russian composer. He died in the late 19th century, so I figured I could put in some of his music without getting in trouble for plagiarism.

Wooooooooaah Noah that is so incredible! I say definitely include it in your portfolio. It makes all the pieces in my own portfolio look massively incomplete bleuuuugh. I love how you blended both the traditional elemtns of a still life with more stylistic options like the crown and the musical elements.

Duuude totally put this in your portfolio, it's absolutely wonderful. The shading is fantastic and you did a hell of a great job not only making it extremely accurate, but your placement of the gold ink appears to be very thoughtful, pulling the eye around the piece. You did a good job keeping it bottom heavy, and really the only thing I can criticize is that in future pieces, perhaps try to work on perspective, or doing a work that isn't centered in the middle of the paper-But those are just things for you to experiment with in the future, I honestly wouldn't change a thing about this drawing. Β Great job!Β
