Description Many things are reveled to me in my dreams, meditations, and visions.
This one was shown to me in a dream.
My Wolverine Torek and helper came to show me The Man that lived With Wolverines.
This was one of those pieces that did not come out exactly as it was shown to me, yet it came out exactly the way it was shown to me.
This is the first time I ever painted Kaywah.
That man was very handsome- I bet you he didn't smell very good at all being of the Wolverine People, but he was very handsome with his animal face.

Not to be redistributed, copied, or used for outside use AT ALL by ANYONE.
I do not have to remind you poeple about the dangers of taking what does not belong to you- culture wise, and personally.
This image also contains the spirit of a Wolverine- and best not to make those people angry. They are not lenient or sympathetic at all.

your northwest native american art (is there an exact word for the style?) is very special to me, considering i grew up in oregon where my grandmother read me the stories of the coastal indians and i remember the art and messages behind each tale having a large impact on my life that still effects me to this day.

i'm so glad it moves another person as well, and especially when it inspires such amazing art. thank you for sharing your personal visions with us.

I am all too honored to share my work with people- especially people who have the understanding and will to learn and accept other cultures for what they are. I'm so very glad your grandmother read to you those stories. I grew up listening to tales from all over the world- and that helped shape my understanding of tolerance and the concept that we are all truly the same.
Thank you so muhc for your wonderful comment!

ALMOST

Once again, your art has blown my mind with its amazingly creative...-ness (fails at coming up with creative words)
Seriously? If their was an award for the most awesome North American artist on dA, it would go to you

Okay, so I have to ask since you seem to be into nature and such, by any chance have you seen or heard of Into The Wild?

Yes! I read the book, and want to see the movie. My honest opinion is that-for ANYONE who wants to go that far- there still is a need for preparation. Cold turkey isn't the exact way of going about things, and part of survivor ANYWEHRE is having the grounding of good teachers. Living in Canada, being blessed sot meet so many poeple, and willing to LEARN what these people teach, you find yourself knowing how to do "abnormal" day things like hunting, canoing, camping for extended periods of time.

If you want to watch/read up on a man who DID live out in Alaska for 20+ years just by his own, go watch the PBS documentary " One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey Book". The reality is, part of being "in touch" with nature is knowing how much, how little, where and when to tread, take, and intervene. Part of being a part of nature is observing from a distance. Loving somethings for the fact that it is, but it's not meant to be owned. People have these moder romantic ideas of Native cultures, Nature in general and animals- and they all clash. I detest when people keep wild animals as pets for nearly the same reason. It's a fine line that people have taken it upon themselves to cross when they shouldn't. It didn't surprise me that the kid died in the end- had he had at least 1-2 years of training to live outdoors, or even living with the Inuit up north, he would have been fine. But he didn't. The sentiment is nice, but the practicality was lacking.

And I just went off on a rant. Ha ha, I stink.

Oh that sounds awesome! Living anywhere in the wild for 20 years is... hah you gotta have some guts! I'll totally check it out thanks!

Yeah I've never been a super documentary fan unless it about animals or the way people live (I can bet I'm the only 16 year old who has said that and actually meant it lately XD ) But I was totally rivited by Into The Wild although it had an insanely unhappy ending. It's put together quite well though, amazing video of the wilderness and animals.

Well, for the actual footage, you have GOT to see that documentary I told you about! The guy collected so many photos and footage of the animals as well- form wolverines to bears, to mountain goats, to just about everything!

As for watching documentaries- that's what I did growing up. Cartoons and documentaries. And when I wanted to get interested in TV series, I got into a few, but then they started to suck, and TV has gone downhill since them. Thank god for APTN! XD

Sweet! Hah I wish I could do something cool like that, go on magical Alaskan wilderness adventure and see a bunch of animals but I'd totally get eaten or starve (either way, its bad) XD

TV has basically disappeared down the crapper in the past five years, hell, if it weren't for Bleach and The Daily Show I wouldn't even watch TV! XD

Beautiful! Just looking at this makes me feel the strong connection you must have! I've had similar experiences with butterflies... If I had to put it in terms of Torek (sorry, I'm not too familiar with the term, but I get the gist of it), I think mine is a butterfly named Amatha. She came in the form of a royal blue butterfly, close to her death, and I held a rite of passage meditation for her.

Great job!

tarkheki In reply to SvenIsMyHomeboy [2007-11-06 02:52:35 +0000 UTC]

THank you so much!
I'm glad to see there are poeple who understand the concept of Torek. It's crazy becuase the smallest clans are the most supernatural ones, and yet everyone thinks themselves a wolf or horse of bear. While I do not care- or judge- anyone's belief system, it makes me angry when poeple use the traditional terms and concepts and sometimes do really offensive things and say they are doing it "traditionally".
I appreciate that you let the Torek come to you- as that is how it IS done. And for the fact that it is a Butterfly, you have seen by yourself how true to yourself it is. They know us. We do not know ourselves. And that is why you will ALWAYS have a connection with the butterfly people.

I honestly am fascinated- and LOVE- poeple who make the brotherhood pact with animals, or the other way around. These spirits have such power to them- and not the power that is commonly referred to by Westerners- but spiritual power. And they are incredibly benevolent, and helpful. Just know the rules of propriety, and they make friends real fast!

Amazing work here my friend seeing this makes me very happy.

I would have to say this is my favorite out of all yours and I can tell this is some of your best work just because it is your Torek.

I love how the human has a wolverine spirit and the wolverine has a human spirit which is showing the bond between the two

I think that you have to draw the wolverine man in a more realistic style.

And you have the spirit of the wolverine and I can not imagine you not being lenient or sympathetic.

I am still going to draw you a wolverine one day but not sure when, I am sure they will tell me when the time is right.

I think it is funny that ever since I said if I could hypnotize you it would be to post more of this art and since then you have posted 7 things which I think is great because there is not enough of this style of art on this site

Also when we went hiking on Friday we found evidence of a wolfpack and we are going to track them down and map their territory to try and keep people away from them and there was also some evidence of small predators in the area

You know, the Wolf images also come out grand becuase they are my Torek as well. But then again, I love my Boar image as well. Argh, I love them all!

I think my Wolf Center is the one to give me my Leniency and my Sympathy. However, I become very rigid when it comes to family matters. Both Wolf and Wolverine have a high propriety expectancy, but then again, so do most of the animals. I am making my Medicine Cards, and they bot are in the frame image... I really am blessed to have them helping me. I remember being so overwhelmed - with also some rejection I will admit- when they came to me. But after seeing them as a perfect refleciton.. I could not deny how much they do for me!

YAAAYY!! Wolves on the island! Oh, lucky skunk you!

I cant wait to see your cards and I already know they will be amazing looking.

is it common to have more then one torek from what you learned?

from what I know from coast salish beliefs is that everyone has a torek (or whatever you want to call it) which is an animal that they are most like and follow thier ways and are connected to then we can also have a seperate guardian spirit animal.

Out east, you have a variance between cultures.
A minimal of two, some say 4 (a scared wheel) and others say 9 (a double wheel perpendicular, with a center). Each Torek gives you somehting form the 4 plains- an aspect of character (social plain), physical attribute (physical plain), emotional (spiritual plain), and talent (medicine plain). In the case of the double wheel, the second wheel are the guides or messengers. You center, being the Torek most like you (Man-behind-the-mask simile), and you draw one out of your first circle as a "balance" (sort of like a yin-yen concept).
Some Medicines believe that everyone starts of with 1, and as time goes by, you discover another and another- but will stop when you reach your "spiritual potential". So, for instance, someone who doesn't believe at all will have one that might leave. Someone who believes but shows no interest in learning or does not keep connecting to them will stop at 2, someone who learns to thank their Toreks, acknowledge and follow the messages will have 4, and those who can work Medicine, sense Toreks, call them forth, send them out, will achieve the double wheel.

By traditional Medicine teaching, those who are admitted into learning the medicines have to have 2 of the 3 animals as Toreks- one is a "Helper" and one is a "Teacher"/"Harness"/"Reflection". The "Helper" is the Trickster animal, and the "Teacher"/"Harness"/"Reflection" is the one that Helps Teach you, Helps you retain what you taught, and acts as representative for you. Both are a reflection of who you are.
These guys also have no connection to Totems what so ever. My medicine man has 5 beasts Representing himself- Coyote (Totem), Wolf (Torek), Spider (Torek) and Horse (Ancestors), Buffalo (Medicine)- but they do not necessarily come up in his wheels (That is, the non-Torek ones).
And of course, as time goes on, some people end up being taken as a brother/sister, or binding themselves in friendship to other Animal-poeple, and that to becomes one of their symbols as well.

Very interesting

That is much different then the Coast Salish totem/torek I do not even know what to call it and I am trying to find a Coast Salish word but have yet to find one. Totems for Coast Salish are all about transformations. First there was a time when there was no humans and only animals and the animals could take human form, then some got stuck in human form. Then there is another time period when the changer roamed the land and transformed humans into the animals they were most like. So our animal is either who are ancestor was before they got trapped or what animal we would get changed into if the changer was around today and I think it has more to do with the last one since marriages between different animals usually come out with another animal as a child.

The picture I am working on now is a transformation/changer picture that is from one of the legends I have found and will be done this weekend so I will explain more then

I have heard that before too! It was form the Cowachan.
I love how every culture has it's own history becuase the way I see it- they are all right! So many of us could either come form this way or that, different starting points, and different histories. I know a few poeple who I'm sure ARE the spirits of their oldest ancestor who came back to get the family back on track. It's all so interconnected and weaved.

Can't wait for the picture... I wants to see it! Anything you post is like "Oh la la time!" for me!

Whoa Bernice, you seem to be in a flow , right ?
This is again an awesome picture !!!
I wish I could have such dreams !
Do you keep track of them by writing them down, or just start to draw when you wake up ?

And pardon me, but I think I remember one of you two being a HUUUGE Logan fan ... so it must have been you, right ? )
Or did *I* dream that ? No offense ... *nudge*

tarkheki In reply to Wintermoon666 [2007-11-06 02:28:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!
I usually keep track of my dreams by images- writing them down makes me loose the content, as i am so caught up in detail, I forget the actual chain of events. However, I will quickly draw down what I see, and sometimes write out the music that I hear. I then develop it further when I want to refine it.

This image has nothing to do With X-men. Please do not associate it with that.

Wintermoon666 In reply to tarkheki [2007-11-06 05:46:31 +0000 UTC]

Thanx for the detailed answer, and sorry for the X-Men thingy ...
I've tried to write down my dreams into a sort of diary too, but memory of the dream so quickly fades, it hardly ever worked, so after a while I stopped doing it.
Do you dream such vivid dreams often or is it just once in a while ?
Because I seem to have the same problem as Bart Simpson : "TV has killed my imagination!" ;D ;D Nah not that bad, but when I dream I usually dream about mundane things like work or my friends or so ... has been a long while since I dreamed of something more abstract or not tied to my real life ...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tarkheki In reply to Wintermoon666 [2007-11-06 06:54:14 +0000 UTC]

I have a slew of them... both really "out there" and var "down to earth". Sometimes it's as clear and real as when I'm awake, and sometimes it's so fuzzy I can't remember... but the times I dream of these things, I always remember them CLEARLY. SO it's easier for me to draw out something when I wake up.
