Description I have a student grade set of oil pastels.  I have never used oil pastel, and wanted to draw a sunflower.  Might as well give it a try.
.
  First try.
.
After reading some tutorials on Pinterest on using oil pastel.  I prepared my paper, did the sketch, and even did some color swatches on the same paper.  I also read that the colors could be blended with Mineral oil.
.
After coloring the sunflower.  To me it looked like a little kid colored it.  No sharp details either.  Okay, no big.  Then something happened that was the "OH NO!!!" moment.  When I used the mineral oil to blend the pastel, it also reacted with the pigment in the paper!
.
I used some black, and clicker pencil and helped this a little.
.
A learning experience!   a fail, but ... onward!
.
Thanks for looking!  If I could get my hands on you. I'd give you a hug! :evilaugh:

I think it looks really good, my dear! ^^
The detail of the tiny bee flying towards the sunflower´s truly cute too! I can see what the mineral oil did- dagnab it...it washed away more than intended, yes? it akso did tha for me when I once used some to try and blend colour pencil layers (in that case, some light acetone-based product can work milder: maybe use something like like thinner mediums? (like those varnishes they sell to fixate glitter dust!)  --I hope this little tip helps for next time **just in case make a small try in a discardeable paper tho- don´t risk a good drawing , if it fails I wouldn´t forgive myself!

Hi Lavinia.
.
The dye in the paper dissolved when I applied the Mineral Oil.  It changed the color of the oil pastel too.  I new that the pastels binder was mineral oil, but didn't suspect that the dye used on the paper would dissolve too.
.
I did color test on the same paper with the pastels, but forgot to test the oil on the paper.   I have turpinoid too.  But am afraid to use it around my dog, Rascal.
.
I used a spray on fixative.  I used several coats.
.
I am going to give this to my sister.  I worked on a mat for her today.  When I finish the mat, I might post it.  Man, I suck at math, measuring the mat to the drawing and frame was difficult for me.
.
Thanks for the reply hon"  You know that I love you great advice!
