Description Beautiful Honu. One of my most favorite animals in the world. The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle. You have to have patience and a quick camera to get a good shot of them sticking their heads out of the water. They don't do it often or for very long. lol

GREEN SEA TURTLE INFO:

Of the three native sea turtles, the Green Turtle (Honu) is the most common. These turtles, which can weigh up to 400 pounds, are primarily vegetarians. They eat algae or limu (Hawaiian seaweed) growing underwater on coral reefs and on rocks close to shore. Green turtles prefer to live near large "pastures" of limu that are located in near shore waters around the Hawaiian Islands.

In Hawaii, the green turtle is a threatened species. All sea turtles in Hawaii are fully protected under state law in addition to the Federal Endangered Species Act. These laws prohibit harassing, harming, killing, or keeping sea turtles in captivity without a permit allowing these activities for research or educational purposes. Divers should be aware that riding turtles is illegal and puts these animals under stress. When returning from foreign countries, U.S. citizens may not enter the United States with any sea turtle products. Violators may receive penalties of up to one year in prison and a $20,000 fine.

I just came back from Hawaii a couple of days ago and this animal has become my favorite animal.
It's really hard not to love them.

I really love this picture

Thanks! I really miss living there, they are one of my favorites as well. Did you get a chance to swim with them in the ocean? It's really cool to actually be in the water with them. If your ever on the island of O'ahu there is a spot called Turtle Beach in North Shore. Go early because thats when they come up to the beach to feed...it also gets crowded in the afternoon. (lots of tour buses) You'll be able to get some great shots of them in and out of the water.

Yeah Maui is wonderful. Thats where I saw my first turtle. I was snorkeling by some hotel...don't remember the name. I was going to do the Turtle Town snorkel when I was there but we didn't have time. The place on O'ahu is nice cause they come up on land. Did you do the Hana Hwy?? Man...I can't wait to go back. I miss the ocean.

Yeah the water was pretty calm that day. In fact North Shore is known for it's big waves and rough water during the winter months. There was a surfing competition that was suppose to go on that day but they cancelled it because there was no waves. Bad for surfers, great for me to get shots of turtles! lol

As for the focusing, I got lucky cause the lens I used isn't the fastest and these turtles don't stay up top for long. I think I have about 10 other head shots that didn't come out very clear. But all that matters is that one that does!!!!!!! lol
