Description
Its finally here!!!!
Part one of the huge series of tutorials I'm planning.
For full details on all the tutorials to follow, go here: [link]
Horses:
Mistletoe Kisses
Faerie Promise
Walking with Angels
Peregrin Took
Explanations:
First - I am not trying to insult anyone's intelligence with this. Not at all. I am simply starting right at the very, very beginning, with the idea that someone who has never looked at a saddle in real life before, can learn as much about drawing them as someone who rides daily.
Second - side saddles will be covered entirely separately.
Third - This is information that I personally have gathered. People have different methods of tacking up, or different names for saddle parts all over the world, so it may simply be that I know a different variation. By all means, ask if you think anything I've said is outright wrong; but I have endeavoured to ensure it is all factual.
Fourth - Please, please pay attention to my rules of use. I really want this to be useful for anyone here on DA who wants it, but it took a lot of time and I will remove it if my work is not respected
This Tack Series is intended primarily for HARPG use, but should be relatable to rl situations.
In rl, a saddler or more experienced person should be called on to correctly fit a saddle, as I haven't gone into detail on fit of the panels around the shoulders. You can't rely solely on this to fit a saddle to a real horse!
The how to draw section was added due to a mixed response from my watchers. Some wanted it, others wanted more focus on other parts. I decided it couldn't hurt to add in that extra bit.
When Drawing: Just remember you don't have to do it this way. I don't even do it this way; but I used to, because it was easier when I didn't understand shapes in my mind so well. And always remember that sketches can be shoddy and scribbly and you can change them. Don't try to get it perfect on the first attempt. You'll drive yourself mental, I guarrantee it.
Rules:
Do not, under any circumstances:
Please do:
Next up: Bridle Basics. Featuring more of the Lakewood Horses.
Once the Basics tutorials are over, the specific ones can start. It is these ones that I will be borrowing the volunteered horses for; so you still have a little bit to wait. But thank you so much to those who've let me borrow horses ahead of time
I won't lie to you - so I don't know when the next bit will be up. I'd like to see how this goes down first, but I promise, I will try not to take forever.
I utterly lost count of how much time went into this.
Tiny sketches scanned in and everything done on Photoshop, with text typed in paint then embedded.
Believe this if you want or not - but no refs were used. Just a heck of a lot of experience, obsession and research over the years

This is a wonderful, absolutely wonderful, tutorial. Absolutely magnificent! I know some people in REAL LIFE who need to look at this to understand how a saddle should fit and where it should be on the horse's back. People forget to pull the pad up into the gullet. They put the saddle ON the withers. Or they put it on the shoulder! This is fabulous! It's so clear and perfectly illustrated!

Thank you so much! ^^
And yes, some of the more basic stuff was inspired by college students I knew when I was studying horse management that started the courses, and continued into their second years still sort of useless (you expect it at the start, but not to carry on ) Many times I've wandered around and undone girths so I can shift the saddle actually onto their backs XD.
I'm really glad you like it, and the illustrations

Thank you for this lovely reference! I've been going all over HARPG to find stuff like this! And I don't think at all this insults anyone's intelligence. People just like to forget, what's normal to some, is unknown for others
I just wanted to let you know, I added this to my groups I've got a habit of helping my members by creating a folder in the faves of my groups, and this tutorial is great! (it's in my groups: #HA-DBA & #HA-FD , I need your permission for #Harpg-UOA
) I know some of my members have never even gotten closer to a horse, so this is a great help!
Even for me in RL I got some difficulty getting my saddle right, and some theory behind getting it correct is good to know!

You're welcome I have a bridle one in the works, and the whole series is planned out, I just don't have enough hours in a day
And its good to know you think the balance is right and it's not too patronising - I was definitely in the unknowing category before I went to college
Thanks for letting me know you added it to your groups. The only thing is, your UOA group is primarily focused on unicorns and Pegasi. It may be compatible with the unicorns, but it is a tutorial based heavily in reality, so it can't easily apply to pegasi (saddles would have to be fitted differently to allow for the extra scapula) and I don't know how much use this would be for that group's purpose. If some of your members are real novices with saddles and fitting, the last thing I'd want is them to use this as guidance for drawing tack onto various fantasy horses with extra anatomy when it wouldn't work XD.
And its common sense - but even if you feel this helped you in rl, definitely get a vet or saddle fitter out to be 100% sure. I'm fairly confident fitting saddles after years of college/uni, but its always best to have it checked than risk a twisted/sore back That aside, I'm really glad you think there's enough detail here to help you so much ^^

I know the feeling
I don't own a horse, I ride a horse from my stable - The stable I'm riding at is trying to teach this to me, but I'm always on a horse that hates saddles
It's horrible to get a saddle right, just getting it on it's back is a horror
Witch is why the owners usually re-locate it on the back before I get on
Some more theory might help to locate it good, even if that stubborn pony is trying to crush my feet
Ow but I'd want this tutorial for the Unicorns I have a saddle example for the Pegasus, but not for the unicorns
Besides, a lot of Pegasus have retractable wings, so normal saddles are good for them too

Don't we all? XD
I used to deal with a really grumpy horse at college who detested being tacked up. You went near him with a saddle and his back would hollow straight away, he wouldn't stand still, he'd hold his breath and if that all didn't work - he's spin his quarters out and try to crush you against the stable wall, or the fence rails or anything nearby. He was awful - and tacking up was just the start. So on that point - I know the feeling too, lol.
He's just a pain, but we did have a warmblood who would buck the minute you sat on him and got really finicky when he was tacked up, too. With him, it turned out he had a sore back. I don't suppose the horse you're talking about has been checked out by a chiropractor? If its a habit or personality quirk that's one thing, but if its an injury you might find you can fix it
And that's fair enough. I'll accept it for the unicorns, then (though I'll take your word for the retracting wings. I don't deal so much with pegasi XD).

Yup, they're fine, they just HATE being tracked up. The stable I'm at doesn't mind re-training horses that have been abused or horses that were trained wrong - several horses are a pain to get a track near, but a real pleasure to ride.
Despite that some have horrible ground manners while tracking up, the owner doesn't quite care - her horses are allowed to hate the saddle, as long as they're not hurting anyone. It's a reason I love going there - Horses are allowed to have a personality Trough, one mare, is only saddle by her, or the teacher she hired
Neither of the horses I ride makes trouble when I ride them so I don't think it's a back-problem But I'll check next time to be sure
Thank you! If you need some help with the tuts or something, you know where to find me ^^

Tattered-Dreams In reply to Nynke-FmnF [2012-09-30 15:55:30 +0000 UTC]
I'm all for horses that have personality - one I nearly bought was a scatty Arabian and used to leap sideways at his own shadow XD - but that's different to manners. Because I was on a college/student yard, there were a lot of people who didn't know anything when they started, and a horse like Dice (who would practically attack people with saddles) were just not safe. He was really cheeky in general, and that was okay - but it was the aggression that was a problem. Not just with riding stables or student yards, either; I'm not a fan of the racing world because of a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes and owners don't care that their horse has bad manners as long as it wins. I just have some fairly strong opinions on it all
Its not always a back problem; if its just the saddle, it could be it fits a bit odd, but not enough to cause pain. Or maybe people do up the girth too tight, too fast - anything like that. If they get antsy when you approach with tack in general, it could even be the bridle they don't like - bit not fitting, too high/low or their teeth aren't right. Unfortunately, you learn to question absolutely everything XD. A friend of mine had a TB mare who used to go beserk when you got on (and I mean cat leaps in the air, four feet at once like a star bronc). They checked absolutely everything, then they gave her time off, then they moved her, then they separated her, then they put her into double work - she just did the same thing every time no matter what, so we figured it was psychological, noy physical. They had to put her down at 7years because they couldn't do anything with her, but she'd pine when she was left in the field . That's an extreme case, though...
You're welcome, and thanks for the offer - others have volunteered, too, but I'm sort of determined to do it all myself at the minute XD

Nynke-FmnF In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-09-30 20:15:46 +0000 UTC]
I think it's just a mix of personality and behavior - I once heard some trainer say, some people might not consider this or that a problem, while others would. I think it's more that case then anything else. They are just very strong-willed horses. If they delay the saddle being put on their back, why wouldn't they make a big deal out it? I'm not as strong as the owner, and they know it. They push me with the same strength as the owner, and I trip backwards. What's not a problem for her, is a problem for me. (I'm a lot lighter then their owner, and she has more muscles then me too
) She probably never tried to get that out, as it's not that big a deal for her. And I'm not really the boss of the mare XD I'm scared as hell when I have to walk next to her, and that doesn't help XD She's sweet to ride, but a hell to track up. The gelding, I can deal with, if I have the time. (if it has to go quick it's the owners who'll be saddling him) I can call the gelding's bluff, but not the mare's - and since she really kicks and bites, it's rather important I figure out when she's bluffing
I think my issues are just all due my own inexperience and because I don't know the horses as well

Tattered-Dreams In reply to Nynke-FmnF [2012-09-30 20:41:44 +0000 UTC]
I suppose that's true to an extent - that some people see different things in the same action. The Arabian who leapt at his own shadow would also not stand still to be plaited, and that wasn't dangerous, and it was his personality, but to an extent it was also misbehaving. I guess it just depends on what the person who's handling him at the time wants to do.
That mare you deal with sounds like a devil, though! I can't say I'd be too keen to spend time with her if she snapped all the time, but I see what you mean about you being different to her owner. Horses are smarter than you think though, and you're right that it's your own inexperience - she's likely calling your bluff. She knows your not as strong, and she could be softer to accomodate that, but until you step up and take charge, she'll keep doing it her way. I've had to learn that with plenty of horses myself. A little welsh pony at college was terrifying practically the whole yard; everyone thought he was adorable, so he walked all over them and was a pain to ride, but I just clicked with him and stamped back when he got moody, so we never had problems, even if he tried to dump half the staff. Horses always take their cues from us, and once we know that, everything's a bit easier
