Description
Its finally here!!!!
Part one of the huge series of tutorials I'm planning.
For full details on all the tutorials to follow, go here: [link]
Horses:
Mistletoe Kisses
Faerie Promise
Walking with Angels
Peregrin Took
Explanations:
First - I am not trying to insult anyone's intelligence with this. Not at all. I am simply starting right at the very, very beginning, with the idea that someone who has never looked at a saddle in real life before, can learn as much about drawing them as someone who rides daily.
Second - side saddles will be covered entirely separately.
Third - This is information that I personally have gathered. People have different methods of tacking up, or different names for saddle parts all over the world, so it may simply be that I know a different variation. By all means, ask if you think anything I've said is outright wrong; but I have endeavoured to ensure it is all factual.
Fourth - Please, please pay attention to my rules of use. I really want this to be useful for anyone here on DA who wants it, but it took a lot of time and I will remove it if my work is not respected
This Tack Series is intended primarily for HARPG use, but should be relatable to rl situations.
In rl, a saddler or more experienced person should be called on to correctly fit a saddle, as I haven't gone into detail on fit of the panels around the shoulders. You can't rely solely on this to fit a saddle to a real horse!
The how to draw section was added due to a mixed response from my watchers. Some wanted it, others wanted more focus on other parts. I decided it couldn't hurt to add in that extra bit.
When Drawing: Just remember you don't have to do it this way. I don't even do it this way; but I used to, because it was easier when I didn't understand shapes in my mind so well. And always remember that sketches can be shoddy and scribbly and you can change them. Don't try to get it perfect on the first attempt. You'll drive yourself mental, I guarrantee it.
Rules:
Do not, under any circumstances:
Please do:
Next up: Bridle Basics. Featuring more of the Lakewood Horses.
Once the Basics tutorials are over, the specific ones can start. It is these ones that I will be borrowing the volunteered horses for; so you still have a little bit to wait. But thank you so much to those who've let me borrow horses ahead of time
I won't lie to you - so I don't know when the next bit will be up. I'd like to see how this goes down first, but I promise, I will try not to take forever.
I utterly lost count of how much time went into this.
Tiny sketches scanned in and everything done on Photoshop, with text typed in paint then embedded.
Believe this if you want or not - but no refs were used. Just a heck of a lot of experience, obsession and research over the years

This
is
AWESOME.
Love the details! You really nailed it on everything. ^^ And now I know for sure, Rusty's saddle is ill-fitting. I'll post some piccus of the predicament and ask you how I can fix it.
BUT I LOVE THIS!
Say, are you going to do one with breastcollars and martingales?
Oh, and one way I've been taught to lay a western saddle down is to tip it over on it's horn so the back end is sticking in the air. This is so the jockeys/tree/skirt don't spread out or break. Though the best way is on a saddle rack.

XD; did you just find it?
Glad I did good on all the little details - And I'm honoured you think so highly of me! You can post pics, and I can try to help; but without being able to feel it on his back, my opinion is very limited. If you're fairly sure it doesn't fit, you may want to get it checked out by a saddler, too
Thank you
And yes. The next one in the works is for bridles (same as this, so fitting, storage, putting on and taking off as well as drawing them - with particular attention to how the bit sits in the mouth, which is my pet peeve - and how to hold reins). After that, I've got specific english and western saddles, and english and western bridles. The last one planned is for various types of english equipment. I may do this first, as it might be more beneficial. Everything from market harboroughs to poulticing. With martingales (both types) and breastcollars (also both types) in between Sound good?
And the way you've been taught sounds like how you store an english saddle short term, too. I hadn't heard you did it like that, but it's good to know; thanks for the info

I did! Isn't that awful?
Well, you've ridden more horses and worked with more tack than I have, so I know you gots the brains. I'll try to grab piccus tomorrow. But I'm quite sure its the saddle.
Ooooh, can't wait to see the bridle one!
And yawp, that's how to do it. I know cowboys out on the land will sleep on it, though. Ithink I'd just bring an extra pillow.

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-06-04 15:27:45 +0000 UTC]
Haha; no worries. It'll work its way around slowly
And I'll have to take your word for that XD, since I don't actually know how many horses you've ridden, or what kind of tack you've used And no rush on the piccies ^^
Lol, me either. So much stuff I have left to do; the bridles keep taking a back seat!
Extra pillows probably are the best idea, too; though I dunno how it'd fare going through the wilderness - and the stuffing would go everywhere if you got into a gunfight

It's great though. I'm part of the Outlaw Trail and Western saddles are sooooo hard to draw! This'll help so many people so much.

Thanks. And yes; I did seem to get it out just on time XD. Western saddles were the bane of my existance. A lot of practice and a long obsession really helped
Just hope I can at least get the bridle one out soon to help people with that...

No. I mean, it is really long but everything is allright like that. It's all in a logic order and everything bases on the other things.^^
Oh it will definitely come in handy, thanks a lot.

Tattered-Dreams In reply to cbako01 [2012-05-17 10:01:32 +0000 UTC]
Lol, thanks. But there's all sorts of people in the world, who do things all sorts of ways. Tack is a very variable part of the horse world, so there's liable to be someone who has a different opinion
I'm glad you (and most others, so far) seem to think its okay though
