Description NOTE:
These are a combination of designs. One or two are entirely mine; a couple are pretty accurate renditions of existing designs and the others are influenced by existing designs but may vary in some ways. I am not claiming to have designed all of these from scratch and nor should anyone else.

Because they're not all completely mine, they are not for sale.

Please don't use any of these ideas exactly as they appear here, but if any catch your eye and influence your own stable designs, it would be great if you could link to this somewhere.

...

General Info

These are stable frontage only. Side and back panel/designs are not indicated and could (in theory) be anything.

Due to the open nature of the designs, they would generally be used in a barn, rather than for an external stable block.

Brief rundown of main features. Notes underneath (marked with '-' are personal thoughts as I try to weigh up which design I like most for Lakewood's new stable block) You may interpret the features differently and you're welcome to.

#1
Fixed, 3/4 height, hinged door. Slide bolt and kick latch.
Half height brick wall with wooden edging
Doorway enclosed by full height bars, positioned to the side.
-Nicely open wall
-feels a little more secluded with the tall door

#2
Fixed, half height, hinged door. Slide bolt and kick latch.
Half height brick wall with wooden edging and a horizontal, front-facing rail across opening.
Doorway enclosed by full height bars, positioned to the side.
-doorway feels a little boxed in
-Horizontal rail closes off the front a little. Also useful for rugs

#3
Fixed, half height, hinged door. Two slide bolts.
Upward curving, symmetrical walls, entirely from brick. Not quite full height.
Doorway open and positioned centrally.
-Grander looking. Maybe a bit much for Lakewood

#4
Fixed, half height, hinged door. Slide bolt and kick latch.
Half height wall; lower half bricked in and top half wood panelled and edged.
Doorway open and positioned centrally.
-A bit flat?
-Nicely open and airy, though
-Maybe too open
-not sure about the brick/wood arrangement

#5
Fixed, asymmetrically sloping door, half to 3/4 height. Two slide bolts.
Entire frontage is the hinged door. Wooden panelled with edging.
-Interesting
-easy access for leading in/out and mucking out
-Take up aisle space
-Who needs a door that big anyway?

#6
Fixed, asymmetrically sloping doors, half to 3/4 height. Two slide bolts and kick latch.
Entire frontage is two hinged doors; one wider than the ther. Wooden panelled.
-Nice
-Not sure about the shape
-Versatile; open one half, or both depending on access needs
-not sure it fits at Lakewood

#7
Sliding, full height door with metail railings in upper half. Top rail only and two latches.
Full height wall; wooden panelled, with metal railings in upper half.
Doorway positioned centrally.
-lovely, country style
-too contained and cagelike
-like sliding doors but not full height ones
-this is why I'm having so many issues

#8
Sliding, full height door with open window in upper half. Top and bottom rails with two latches.
Full height wall; brick with wooden edging and metal railings in upper half.
Doorway positioned to the side.
-I like the brick and wood combos
-looks very square
-still too contained
-Halp!

That's about it. Tagging sobreiros because he suggested I post this when I still couldn't decide.

Thanks c: yeah working on a stable can be hard, I know from experience x3
I'm making a riding academy lol I haven't even made a Logo for it yet let alone stables and a uniform

Np ^^ they are all quite beautiful

Yep, definitely. Lakewood has been the same since I invented i in 2011 so this year I'm doing a bit of a facelift. Not a total change, but a bit of updating. So additional stables need to be sorted (gah - I never managed a uniform or a logo! I just couldn't decide on either of them, despite many attempts. The closest I got was making a plz account so all my Lakewood art has its own icon, but no logo - )

It's quite difficult x3 especially a facelift but I'm sure you'll be able to do it and find a suitable icon

#6 is far and away my favourite! I think the colour scheme suits Lakewood best - soft and warm - and all the edges are nice and rounded but not overly so like #3. I also like the practicality of being able to open up the whole front of the box - makes chores much easier! The black hinges look really pretty to me for some reason as well ;3;
Good luck choosing what you like though, they're all gorgeous c;

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MusePony [2016-05-16 18:11:10 +0000 UTC]

I agree that the colour scheme fits; I really love 6's. And its not too straight. As you say, its practical to open the front, but without the bulkyness of having a single door panel like 5. However, I just don't know that the style feels right. 3 is a bit too curvy, and too much brick for Lakewood. I like brick designs in moderation X

Definitely black hinges and latches, though - much more farm-style Thanks for the thoughts!

Okay so... I rather like #5, it honestly feels the most "Lakewood"-y, but the massive door... I don't like as much. And I feel there's a bit of a lack of continuity between stalls, in that the wall rises then suddenly drops again, and while this won't affect the horses, to me it just looks strange. I also like #2, though I foresee horses getting their heads stuck under the wooden bar, heh. Maybe removing the bar and the beams would make it better? #8 is very pretty too, but it's got that caged in feel you don't like, so I'd say ditch the last two.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to sobreiros [2016-05-16 18:08:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...I'm really not sure about the single huge door, either. And I totally agree about the lack of continuity in the line. The one I actually saw was just straight across, but somehow that looked harsher, so when I was doodling ideas, I tried a curved thing. Neither really sit right. 2 is probably up there as a favourite, but I'm not really happy with it. I don't really mind the rail (horses manage to get their heads between field rails and back out just fine, so I didn't really think getting stuck was an issue), but its also just a bit...off. I don't know. Without the bar and beams I think it ends up more like 4, which then looks too open?

And yeah; the last two are lovely, and look amazing in barns, but a bit too caged for me. Someone gave me a thought for something else, though, so I may add to this if I get a chance

Basically...I'm still useless and indecisive. What else is new? XD

(late. laaaate.)

Looking back, I really rather like #6 as well. Alternatively, you could try something like #4 but with curving bars instead of a wall. That would make it cosier, but without being too cage-like. Something like this. I'd ditch the bars on the lower part of the door though and just make it solid. Unless you've gotten better ideas in the mean time.

I'm really drawn to 1 and 6, 1 because I like the unexpected shape and 6 because I've been looking at those for my stable as well XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to KAHarder [2016-05-16 01:31:09 +0000 UTC]

I kinda like 1, too. 6 I'm not sure about; the open front is an interesting concept but I'm just not sure. The shape is a nice change, though

I think 2 is probably my favourite, but even that isn't really what I'm looking for. Ah well, it just means that one of the ideas I had for a painting of Heaven will have to wait

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KAHarder In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2016-05-16 01:38:55 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, what if you made the doorway a bit wider so that the door isn't quite so narrow? That might help with the boxed-in feel. In the end it's better to wait for the perfect design than to rush into one you don't love XP

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to KAHarder [2016-05-16 11:05:32 +0000 UTC]

See, these are not to scale in any way, they're just representations, so the doorway could be as wide or narrow as you like. Standard is 4ft wide. I think its just the design - the half height door and wall, with the support beam in between - that makes the doorway look narrow, regardless of how wide it actually is. If that makes sense?

(That said, it has just given me an idea )

But I totally agree; waiting for the right thing is usually better than rushing ahead before you're happy ^^

KAHarder In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2016-05-16 17:49:03 +0000 UTC]

I understood that perfectly XD I stand by it though, if the door was 8ft I'm sure it wouldn't feel as closed off : P
I can't wait to see what you come up with now!

I do love some of the brick designs But I think its a bit too much with the Brick's for Lakewood's vibe. And those open front styles are really interesting, but I just don't know about them XD I've given myself a tough job...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

newvoh In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2016-05-16 03:00:00 +0000 UTC]

hmmmm yeah xD I do like the shape of 2 as well, if you did wood instead of the brick ( or just used the brick as a frame/post accent instead ) it might work xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to newvoh [2016-05-16 11:01:40 +0000 UTC]

Too much brick on 2?

Its really annoying; I love the idea of a really open stable with the low front but something a bit more enclosed feels...cosier, I guess. Trying to find an inbetween is a pain Thanks for the thoughts!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

newvoh In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2016-05-16 12:08:48 +0000 UTC]

no i mean cut iut the brick on 2 a pur wood there ( or bulletproof glass ) and then instead of wood at the ebd of each wall put a small square pillar made of brick and attach the doors to that

yeah I went with s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/2… something like that and just use the velvet rope ( or meshes ) for the doors except for the brood and isolation stalls and 3 spares for ill tempered beasties. i fell in love with that style watching movies like black beauty so yea rofl

no problem xD

Tattered-Dreams In reply to newvoh [2016-05-17 08:40:31 +0000 UTC]

OOooh, interesting....I may have to doodle that up, too Thanks for the thought!

And I love those designs too; old movies do favour those kind of stalls because they were easy to build, clean and use, as well as being cheaper, which all made sense at the time. I feel like it doesn't really fit Lakewood, and its a bit too open for what I want, though. But yes; I'm totally with you; the ropes draped across look really lovely

I've seen so many stunning barn designs that I have no idea where I'd start if I got to choose my own one for real XD (Other than the fact that my real life stables are painted pink, I quite like their design, though, so that will do for now One Day I might just get a roof put across the yard so it feels a bit more barn-like )

I only recently got pinterest, and its got some great stuff on it, but I feel like a lot of it is more western/American in design. I'm in England so the big American barns aren't so common out here. So there's a lot of designs that don't actually crop up on pinterest. More research needed, I think
