Description

This got way way out of hand.

I'm a little attached to Mossy, since she cantered into my head and found her way to Lakewood, so I thought I'd just draw a quick picture of her - another of my minis (My God, these are addictive). That wasn't too difficult, but then I couldn't decide what the background was going to be.

I just started labelling laters - sky, hill, horizon, woodland - and as I did this, the background appeared in my head. So I started, and the more I drew, the more I could see it and I realised it was way too intense to be a tiny little scribble, so I figured, which horse haven't I shown a lot of?

Contessa. Our Timekin mare So she found her way into the scene too. End result? I really love this (though there's the usual anatomy flaws and my lake water is ) So this is Becca and Chess out hacking one morning in some nice weather, now that the worst of winter is over.

It occurs to me that I haven't drawn Calling Lake, just behind the Farm, but this is one of the regular hacking routes. Anyone familiar with Lakewood's map might know where to visualise this if I say the trail to the woods up by Wickerwood's gate is a short way off to the left of this picture

And now Storytime!
--------------
"Ace, get down you mad dog!" Becca chided, trying to shoo away the excitable dalmatian so she could open the huge barn door. Ace barked, and immediately leapt backwards, bounding off around the Farmyard. Everything was still locked up from the night but Hershey's head appeared over the door of the goats' shared stall, next to Kody's. Ace had done it now; she'd woken them all up.
Becca shook her head and pushed the great door inward. There was some open space before the stalls began, four on either side of the centre aisle, and their light gig was stored on the left, leaning wearily on the arched shafts. To the right were the crooked steps leading up the hay loft. Sat at the bottom, looking supremely annoyed, was Kismet; their snowshoe cat.
Becca cringed internally, even as she stepped over. "Hey, Pretty girl," she cooed, hoping the cat would forgive her if she laid out the compliments. "Have you been here all night?"
Kismet seemed to scowl and she stood regally before slinking down the barn to the Den, giving Becca a wide berth. She was a yard cat - always outside, if unusually cuddly - but she didn't take kindly to being shut out of the Farmhouse at night. Unlike Eskimo - the Egyptian Mau, who often bedded down in one of the empty boxes.
Becca turned her attention to the horses now. Aphie's head looked out over her door, mane full of straw like normal, and Toeki in the box opposite was trying to gnaw his own nameplate off the wall by his head. Becca rolled her eyes and strode in. Mossy on the closest end put her head over and nuzzled into Becca's extended hand in her usual sweet way, before returning to the last of her haynet.
Chess and Austin had slipped into the barn by the time Becca had checked that Karma hadn't torn up her poly rug. They gathered in the Den where Kismet was fed in a hurry to help appease her and found seats. Becca in the swivel chair at the desk, Austin on the sunken couch and Chess in the heavy western saddle on the sturdy saddle horse on wheels.
"It's slow today," Becca said. "Toeki, Karma, Aphie, Matches and Tyke all have the day off. Tessa wants a good long ride; she's been stuck in the Temple for the last two days doing ground schooling."
Chess nodded, swinging her booted feet into the wide stirrups. The whole stand reeled back a foot, making her flail wildly to stay balanced. Austin laughed out loud.
"Remarkable. You can sit on Matches when he's in one of his moods with barely a twitch but a solid object moves an inch and you go flying."
Chess stuck her tongue out at him, settling comfortably again.
"Mature," Becca teased.
There was a whinny from the Barn and footsteps, right before Twitch appeared in the doorway.
"Morning," she said, smiling. "Mum just dropped me at the drive; sorry I'm late."
"It's okay," Austin waved, making space for her on the couch. "You just missed Chess practicing for You've Been Framed."
Twitch glanced over. Chess shook her head. "Ignore him."
The younger girl smirked. "Anyway, I have donuts."
Becca beamed at her, dropping a biro back on the diary. "I love you."
"For later," Twitch sniggered. "Who do you need me to bring in?"
Becca's smile dropped comically, but she turned obediently back to the day's plan.
"We were just saying that most of them have the day off. Only Mossy, Tessa and Oma need work." Becca paused, noted something down, tapped the pen on the page and scribbled something else. "Okay. Twitch; you've got Oma. Chess, Tessa; Austin you can have Tyke and I'll have a fight with Sparky." Matches had been in one of his moods when he was put out the night before, so Becca wasn't looking forward to this.
They all moved to the barn, grabbing headcollars and started the trek to the fields at the bottom.

Nearly two hours later the mucking out was just about finished. The pick up was situated just outside the Farmyard, hitched to the muck trailer. Twitch forked up the last wheelbarrow and freewheeled it down the ramp before pushing it up and securing it. She looked around the side and gave a thumbs up to Austin, in the driver's seat. He returned the gesture, started the engine and gently trundled away to add the mornings wheelbarrows to the muckheap behind the Farm.
Twitch stowed the wheelbarrow in the unused stall in the yard next to the chicken coop - dodged two of the chickens, and quickly closed the gate. Just because the goats escaped often, didn't mean they got a free ticket.
Back in the Den, Becca and Chess were idly sponging soap over hanging bridles as they talked through the day.
They spotted her in the doorway.
"Tweet," Becca exclaimed; a moniker of her own creation for the teenager. "Want to ride today?"
Twitch smiled, but shrugged. "Only if you need me to."
The brunette scoffed, "That was almost convincing. You can get on Oma later. He wants a bit of jumping, since he's done a fair bit of flat this week. You can put him over a couple of grids, if you're up for it."
Twitch beamed, unable to hide her enthusiasm; her soft spot for the sweet natured gypsy stallion hadn't waned in the months he'd been with them. "Yes. I'll do it."
Chess and Becca smiled. Chess indicated the diary on the desk, "For now, do you think you could get a bale in to soak? There's one ready for lunch hay today, so if you could make a start on the nets, that'd be great."
Twitch nodded eagerly. "Sure. Are you two taking out Mossy and Tessa now?"
Becca nodded. "Tessa needs a long ride out of the schools, and Mossy's fit, so they'll keep each other company on a hack. We'll be back probably just before lunch yards, as there's no others to work. Think you can manage Austin til then?"
Twitch laughed. "Sure. I'll get started."
She let herself through to the tack room, and then the side door onto the Stableyard. Chess stood up and stretched.
"I'll get Mossy tacked up. I'm assuming you're getting on Tessa?"
Becca nodded. "Yep. I can't sit in a dressage saddle until my bruise has gone down. Matches and his moods..." The chestnut Arabian had ditched Becca in front of a fence the day before because Aphie coming into season had thrown him for a bit of a loop.
Chess laughed, taking the elegant, straight cut saddle off the wall rack. Mossy's hackamore was next to it, but Chess looked to the other side, and the fine rope halter hung there. She'd found it at the bottom of Mossy's tack box, and called Cole about it - the mare responded well to being rode in that, just as much as the hackamore. Chess hesitated for a mere second before taking the halter off the peg, and scooping up the 12 foot white lead attached. She and Cole had taken Aphie and Mossy to Parelli sessions together a few years ago, so they both owned the distinctive halters and leads.
Becca was balancing Contessa's western ranching saddle on her hip, the woollen pad splayed over the top and simple bridle over her shoulder. They strode into the Barn together.
Contessa was in now, idly lipping up hay from the floor of the box, her mane and forelock still pulled into the running plait that Twitch had worked in while she ate that morning. Becca swung the saddle onto the peg by the door and Chess moved on to Mossy's stable.
The blonde gave the little mare a brush down, though she was remarkably clean, and set the saddle on her withers gently before sliding it into place. Mossy's ears pricked and she lipped up the halter from the door, tossing her head so it flew through the air. Hurry up. Hurry up,

Chess led the mare out, stirrups swinging by her sides and the lengthy lead looped around her neck and fastened to the loops of the halter. Mossy followed her happily out of the barn, into the Farmyard, then through the gate to the Stableyard and finally under the archway to the stretch of green by the School.
Becca was there, carefully mounting up and being mindful of her bruised hip. Chess swung easily onto Mossy's back and settled in the deep seat of the dressage saddle. She coaxed up the lead and gently pressed with her calves. The mare walked happily ahead and Chess glanced back at Becca.
"Ready?"
The brunette nodded, swiping her loose straight hair back over her shoulders. It promptly slipped forward again. "Ready. Lead the way."
Chess let Mossy pick her way up the path past the school and the Garage then the gate to Wickerwood and finally into the trees behind the Farm.
"Take the right path," Becca called. "We'll go up by the canal and over the moor."
"So come back the other side of the Lake?" Chess checked. Becca trotted up beside her, one hand managing the light contact of cotton reins on Tessa's bit. "Yep. That'll take a couple of hours...And we're not stopping."
Chess snickered. Sure enough, now that they were in the open, a pleasant spring breeze whispering through the fresh grass and leaves, Contessa's ears had pricked forward, and her stride surged. She wasn't a huge horse - only 15.3 - but her presence was greater away from the Farm. She truly was wild at heart. Especially in comparison to tiny little Mossy, who would live in the house if she could.
"let's go, then," Chess suggested. "The ground's good, and we won't be able to by the canal."
Contessa had already overtaken, and Mossy needed little encouragement to leap after her, dainty hooves flying.
"We're so racing some of the way home," Becca called back gleefully, half-heartedly trying to bring Tessa's trot back to working from the powerful extended she was immersed in.
Mossy snorted and Chess nodded, remembering the little mare racing against Aphie just 18 months ago. "No problem. Prepare to lose!"

Tattered-Dreams In reply to ??? [2012-02-22 11:51:12 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thank you

Yeah, it almost came out in a 'storybook' kind of vibe, with all the saturated colours and cursive lines. Its not my usual semi-realistic style, but I like how the horses came out . Tessa's braid is a standard running plait or Arabian plait (two names, same thing). The only thing I did was plait her forelock around her ear like the loop on a bridle and braid it into the mane. Her forelock's long enough, and I've always wanted to try it in rl . Her mane - and probably Tyke's - would be like that for any 'Kin shows (We'll just get some spray on it to keep the loose hairs tucked away ). And yes, I adore Mossy, too.

I'm glad you like the tack It's awkward trying to get details in a box about 50 pixels high XD. I think the fender could be further back, but other than that, I was quite happy with Tessa's saddle (especially since I see most western tack on google )

The grass is a mix of flat colours, shaded with dodge and burn, and the use of a preset grass brush at about 3px large behind the lake, and set much larger for the close side of the lake. If I ever have time, I might have to put a tutorial together on how I do my digital work - coz it's so random

And thanks again I love writing about the happenings at Lakewood; so I'm glad you think its good . my writing style hasn't changed much over the years - it's just improved XD. I like to use a mix of diologue and visualisation. I always think people are more drawn in if they can picture it in their minds, so I have to leave space for imagination, whilst giving them an image to build on. I don't know if that makes sense I also have an affinity for writing slightly wacky characters because I love to explore personality and dynamics I've got to think up something epic for your Pattie's Parade now

Anyway, I'm really glad you liked it, and sorry it's taken a while to get Tessa drawn again. The madness that is my life, lol.

You did good, it does feel like a storybook.

Welll... Maybe just a hair. t looks pretty good as is. ^^

Or even just a walkthrough of a work would be fine. I did the same with my grass, the back edges by the far fence are 3 and 1 pixels, and the near blades are closer to 20 pixels. I didn't use dodge/burn much, only because it doesn't add color. But yours has a fabulous rich feel.

Ack, it's a good story definitely. I am drawn in, which is really quite nice. And yes, epic for Pattie's parade! Just remember to double space. 8D

Girl, don't apologize for not drawing your Kins, I haven't even made refs for mine yet. 8D

XD.

Hmm, she might end up having a few loose strands, then. It occurs to me we haven't tried her with any kind of spray, so she may not be all that fond of it... We're dreading it getting warm enough for the horses to need flyspray. And suncream...

Yeah, scaling grass seems to work well for perspective. And I love dodge/burn You're right, they don't add colour, so I usually work out the tones I want, blend them in, then use d/b to get the shades in. I like that it doesn't add colour, it just affects the ones you have, so there's a little more control when it comes to shadows and highlights. I don't know, really. Never thought about it, but that's how it works for me

Yup, yup. Double spacing Noted.

And this is true. I still can't wait to see Orchie in all her blind and birthmarked (?) glory Not that I don't want to see the others, of course

Well, she has already been fly-sprayed from her training here. But, since u got her start of winter, she'll prolly need some more getting used to. :3

That's true, d/b gives greater control. I should try it more often!

Ack, Orchidacaea has been a real sweet gal. We had to blanket her this winter a few times, and she's taken well to it. The other Kins didn't need blanketing at all this year because we've only had like 5 nights of 12 degree weather, but she's one h3ck of a loner. If they're all in the Hanger out of the weather, she'll be under a tree somewhere. And the devil, did I tell you about her mate/seeing partner?

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-02-23 18:40:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank heaven. Becca didn't fancy getting into another violent discussion with her when the time came for that . But you're right; knowing her, she's probably going to play it for all it's worth anyway

Yup. Have a go with d/b and see what you come up with. There's all sorts of settings that you can play with for different things - the only thing I do is tend to keep a low exposure. Have some fun, though

Bless her! Lone wolfing it out in the meadow over winter And yeah; you said there was a stallion who stuck pretty close and kept an eye on her. You weren't sure if she was in foal, were you? Do update me; this is awesome hearing about the goings on in your fields

MissDudette In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-02-23 21:00:03 +0000 UTC]

Yes, she just might let y'all have it come summer. Say, you should fly predators!

Ack, I've been checking her as best I could this winter for pregnancy, but she never was pregnant. And I know it's cold, but she gets a major temperament change when in season, and he gets very protective of her. I was scared stiff she was barren, but Dr. Rick came out and checked both of them. He's been gelded! And he acts stallionish around her, which means he was gelded later in life, which then means she's not barren at all, thank goodness. SO, the two of them must have been caught at one point. This could explain her scar marks. But her eyes aren't scarred or anything weird, so that's likely a born trait. But I was thinking, I prolly have foals by her and him in the herd, just grown up.

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-02-23 21:20:18 +0000 UTC]

fly predators? Am I being dense again? But yeah...I can see that going downhill...

(I adore these backstories you think up! )

Thank god she isn't barren! I dunno how that'd fit with her being a founder and all, but she sounds like she's got some epic gene traits - too cool to not be passed on . And there's a thought - if her mate was gelded late and is responsive to her hormonal changes, you might well have some all grow-d up foals Haven't seen any more with her milky/silver eyes, have you?

MissDudette In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-02-24 13:31:51 +0000 UTC]

I wondered if you all had them or not... They're these little bugs that naturally eat flies, and they have a company out here that breeds them so you can just spread the eggs in the muck heap and tadah! Only a few flies in the summer.

Haha, it's all awesome I say. 8D I wish I had stories like this for Frodo and Sam...

And nope, haven't found any yet, but I prolly will. 8]

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-02-24 15:41:22 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, nope I've never heard of them...but I might need to get myself a little colony!

I'm sure you can think up some awesomesauce stories for them, too Maybe they're twins, and both quite small but always look out for each other? Or They're the two stallions in the pasture that never get along, no matter how peaceful the rest are?

Ooh, maybe someone tried to capture one years ago, and they have rope/wire scars? Like this, maybe?: [link] or fight scars from the wild - [link] . They might be very headshy and you can't use a bridle or halter, but a rope looped around the neck?? Just throwing ideas out there

Have fun searching your herd for Orchie babies

MissDudette In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-02-24 19:27:04 +0000 UTC]

We've had them about a decade now, I wonder why y'all don't have them yet? Maybe the company just hasn't gone international yet...

I was thinking they would be two brothers/twins born on the ranch, but they can't be Founders if that's so. I like your idea of them hating eachother, but that would be the same for your Tyke... Hmm... Maybe they'll just be plain twins that happen to be about the oldest I have? Idk...

*Kurrumin was saying that roans that have scars have the base color patches, they lose roaning in that spot. Orchid could be the same way, only the markings under her scars didn't grow back? I rather like that for other Kins, scars kill the steampunk markings. This would actually help explain the Vanishing I'm seeing in younger Kins.

Btw, I've decided the Founders don't have Vanishing! That's why they are Founders. :3. SO, how did they come to be??? And technically, if the Kins have been up in the mountains for hundreds of years, as Italian folklore says, then who were the very original founders? Ima have to send Bean back over for some history searching. :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-02-24 20:03:13 +0000 UTC]

Or maybe we do have them, and I'm just oblivious XD. Lots of things happen without me knowing about it

Well, Tyke is turning out to be quite an introvert, with a submissive personality. It's entirely possible that he's locked in the same pattern - quite hating the other stallions around - but because of the way he is, he just steers clear and stays out of it, rather than get into the fighting. Not to say he wouldn't react if he was backed in a corner, though... We found out he got really twitchy if you grip your hand about halfway up his crest - Becca took a closer look and he has a healed bitemark. My guess is he got into it with someone at some point, and whatever the result, it's made him really keen to avoid conflict.

Hmm, I think I followd you with the roaning and dead pigment that returns - you see that with particularly headcollar rubbing/scars - the hair grows back white. Its a little like lacing/rainscald, which webs across the back if a horse is exposed to lots of wet weather and isn't used to it. I just wonder what'd happened to cause such a huge scar . I like the idea, but I think I'd need to see a picture of her, before being able to tell if it's possible considering genetics and damage. If that makes sense?

Lol, send the Bean to investigate . And is that any offspring from founders - even cross bred - don't have vanishing? Just in case I've misunderstood something crucial - If two timekins, not founders but both purebred have a foal, the foal doesn't vanish, does it? Vanishing is only for Timekin foals with a non-timekin parent on one side. Is that right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissDudette In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-03-05 01:30:32 +0000 UTC]

Awww, poor lad... Interesting stuff I say... I'd like to see where all his personality leads him.

See, I read lacing is a genetic thing and grows longer and white due to age (like greying)?

Haha, we be sending the Bean! Say, did she ask you if she could take Austin along?

Omg, we thought through that all day last week. SO, I am currently making a sheet that I'd like you to look at before we finalize.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-03-05 21:40:47 +0000 UTC]

Us too; but we do love him - and its thanks to you we gots him at all . I'll be keeping up his training, even if none appears in my gallery for a few weeks while I have to do some assignments

Hmm...I think lacing is still a bit of an anomaly. It's been associated with Rain Scald/Rain rot, which is like a fungal infection, but there are horses who express 'lacing' without having ever had an affliction or injury that would result in 'dead hairs' which appear white. I don't have a lot of time to look into it extensively at the minute - I will check it out when I can, though - but I'd say at the minute that 'lacing' as a naturally occuring marking hasn't been fully tested. Its entirely likely that the marks alter with age and as the horse matures and naturally changes shape. Its also possible a grey horse can show lacing that becomes invisible as the horse greys out. You could also say that lacing remains the same, regardless of the horse's age.

As it's a bit unchartered in the real world, you have a little more room to invent with the 'Kins, I think I don't know if that helped?

And WHA--? Nope, we didn't get the message (But the postman doesn't like coming all the way up to Lakewood if the weather's bad, and we've had some foul days ) But Austin accepts! He'd love to bomb off for a few days - or weeks - and leave lakewood to the girls. Oh, Lord, that's asking for trouble.... But Bean best be warned XD; Austin's best friends are girls - he could charm Miss Trunchbull if he were so inclined...

Yay, more 'Kin sheets I'll be sure to take a look at them! I'll be able to see what sounds/looks right and makes sense, definitely. I just may have to hold off on helping with further research for a couple of weeks

MissDudette In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-03-07 16:04:12 +0000 UTC]

It's an idea definitely... I saw some gorgeous lacing on a few animals, it would be neat on the Kins...

Oh gosh, the Bean yelled at me for inviting Austin. 8D She asked I invite Chess Knight instead... I was like, but it's better to have a guy along! And she's like, he's 22 and I'm 16, ARE YOU NUTS??? SO...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-03-07 18:59:01 +0000 UTC]

I think having some 'Kins with lacing would look really cool indeed

And haha! I'd have loved to hear that conversation! "Are you nuts???"

Yeah, Austin good with the sweet-talk, but He does draw the line at girls under 18 XD. Chess would happily take his place (she might get the cold shoulder for a few days) but she's 21, which isn't much younger (though she is a girl, so maybe the age gap isn't an issue ). If Bean wants teenage company - you could always kidnap Twitch XD We could talk her parents into letting her go overseas...

MissDudette In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-03-07 19:56:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, she was just mad because it was a guy. But, Illnlwt her know what's up. Chess and Bean will be staying at our uncle's ranch down there in Tirili, and then just running around finding history.

Btw, we traced the Kins back to 2 stallions and 1 mare from around the Rennasaince times!

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-03-07 21:08:15 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yep - unplanned roadtrip with a strange guy - not something most people would take well XD.
Chess will happily go instead - she does love ranches Are they getting around on horseback up there? or on foot/quad bikes?

Also, I'd love to hear more about Tirili. I've never heard of it so I couldn't be sure if it's fictional in rl terms

And that is awesome! Interesting that there were more stallions than mares... And I should tell you; I got this sudden mental image of a Timekin dinosaur a minute ago. Can you imagine if the genes went back that far, but only recently (Renaissance) evolved into horses? Kinda like the development of the horse from eohippus to the primitive Przewalski and finally to the modern horse. Anyway, it was just a random thought but it just amused me

I hope I didn't offend you in anyway by asking that Chess come instead. It's just that I am very paranoid about going on a trip to a foriegn country with an older male who I don't know all that well, so... I do appologize if I offended you in anyway.

Oh, and just a little forwarning I will get Chess into the craziest adventures while we are in Italy! I'm crazy in that way. XD

Tattered-Dreams In reply to TheOnlyBean [2012-03-09 10:13:16 +0000 UTC]

Haha, no you didn't offend me at all! I wouldn't be too thrilled about an older guy going all the way to Italy with me either XD. And Chess is definitely the craziest of the Lakewood crew, so you'd probably get along with her best anyhow

And thanks for the warning, but no worries. As long as you don't make her wear a dress/skirt or cut her hair, she'll be up for pretty much anything XD. Crazy rules One question though - is she allowed to bring Peanut (her dog) along, or not? Just curious, so don't worry either way

TheOnlyBean In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2012-03-10 03:36:51 +0000 UTC]

Of course she is allowed to bring Peanut! He'll be a great addition as far as Bean is concerned. She loves dogs to pieces.

Ha, they'll get along swimmingly then; there is nothing better than two crazy people going on an adventure together.

:iconnewglompplz: Yay, thank you! Peanut will have far too much fun in Italy She doesn't enjoy being away from Chess all that much XD.

And this will be a wicked trip Chess may technically be an adult by age standards, but she doesn't act it unless she absolutely has to Chess is gonna get on with Bean great; two crazy people galivanting about the forests is gonna be epic

prolly both. And maybe some motorcycles while we're at it.

Yeah, I'm still playing with this city, but I'll get there. I may have to invent the villages on its outskirts.

Oh gosh, you are silly. 8D I want a Timekin dino now.

I'm still playing with that two. I know most historically famous is a stallion... You know, I may change it. 2 mares and 2 stallions would be better. Because Founders can only have a Founder mum AND dad, so this gives me plenty of baby leeway.

How did you know?! Chess' has a thing for motorbikes She's not gonna want to come home... Maybe Becca will sell Aphie while she's away...

Haha! 'Timekin Dino'... I can see this being big.... Just slightly curious how pocket watches and cogs existed back then... (which leads me to another point - the Renaissance is many years before the Victorian era. Steampunk is an 'alternate reality' essentially, of the victorian era which introduces the futuristic mechanics before they were introduced in rl. If Steampunk is victorian, would the markings exist in Timekins before that era? I guess you could argue the markings are like prophecies/insights to the future? Just something to consider, I guess )

True, that might work, having even pairs...The other option is to say you can track the founders down to a small, wild herd. That gives you a little leeway if you don't specifically address numbers? But if you want to be specific, ignore that part

Lol, no worries. Teh Bean will get her back home. 8D

Well, a couple of things: Steampunk, for me, is basically the Industrial Age era, just set in Victorian times. Which also means, taking the two eras were literally back to back, that I'm just mixing them. So, anything steam related and whatnot applies. Have you seen Steamboy, an animated from Japan? That is simply a world without WWI. They're still about beginning 1900s, but steam has exploded in all things mechanical.

Time pieces have existed since Roman times, and maybe farther. But watches weren't invented until mid Renaissance (at least, says Friano's painting ). Which also happens to be when alchemy was exploding in all different areas of expertise. I have yet to know why an alchemist did this, but he discovered Iberian horses could handle some sort of formula, and especially the 4 origin horses I was thinking of, were able to bond to the formula on a molecular level (appropriated from Resident Evil's Alice). Thus, the Timekin was born. And the Bean was thinking that the one stallion we know the most of would of course be the flashiest and the best pass-on-to-babies-est (we could also be able to trace all silver, and thus double colored, steampunk markings to him.) Now, because Kins and steampunk (at it's most basic level) is about clocks and gears, then yes, it makes sense these horses are right at the beginning of watch-making.

I don't really want a small herd that happened naturally so much. That's how the Harlequines came about. According the creators, all horses have a chance of producing red-black-white foals, but the wild kills animals colored like this immediately, both because they're easy to see and because the mutated genes wreck the horse's personality and instincts. I want the Kins to be MADE, not just born. 8]

So yeah, this is giant story. I plan on making a comic for it, so I kind'a want to keep this gist of it I'm telling you a secret.

Haha - yep, drag her back kicking and screaming

A Resident Evil reference. You have won me over! XD But in all seriousness, that's a good explanation and it makes sense to me Just as long as you'd thought about it (which you have). I really love the idea of some 'mad scientist' conducting Alchemy experiments on particular horses and starting up this whole race that's been resilient enough to pass genes on today. Wonderful idea; I really want to see how this comic turns out

(Another random thought - this scientist found four horses who could bond on a base (molecular) level with the formula. But without state of the art DNA testing and technology, how did he find these four horses? Did many horses die during the process of injecting/ingesting the formula and he found them on an off chance? Sorry, if I'm making your brain frazzle You've got me really intrigued)

And no worries. Lips are sealed If you want, I can hide the last couple of comments in case anyone comes looking. Just let me know

Lol, I always loved how awesome Alice was, so yawp.

Yes, that's exactly what happened. And I'm prolly going to get flamed for writing about it, but that's going to be the only thing that can happen. This guy had the money, and he went through A LOT OF HORSES. He would start with the low class hard working beasties, and it'll take him a while to make it up to the expensive Iberian beasties. Yeah... It's gon'na be sad...

But yeah, I've been trying to get these 3 or 4 originals together enough so that I don't have inbreeding. FounderxFounder make a Founder, but a FounderxNormal makes a Classic, and ClassicxNormal makes a Vintage and so forth. And the devil, I decided that the one awesome stallie makes silver/double color, the others don't have to be that way. SO, Orchid may be missing the silver gene.

Hehe, this comic will be awesome. I've got it all crazy; Bean and Chess will be trying to translate stuff, and they won't know the plurals of words until later, so we will all be thinking there was only 1 original for the longest time. And then we'll realize, all the ancient texts say "those horses," not, "this horse." 8D That will be epic turn in plot.

You and me both I loved Alice's character, but she was invented for the movies. She doesn't exist in the games at all, which lead to a lot of character bashing for viewers who were game fans first. Its still a bit of a war zone on forums...

And there could be some flaming when you introduce the concept, but I actually like it. Timekins having bloodshed in their origins sets them apart from all the HARPG breeds that are found wandering the mountains, or have infected/damaged genes. Its not nice, not by a long shot, but its realistic. Only a slightly deranged person would consider blending horses and alchemy, and that kind of person wouldn't have technology to help decide which horses. Logical conclusion would be to just experiment and test masses. Like you said - sad, but real.

Interesting theories your working on there Sounds like you're well on top of it. Something to possibly consider - there's only four origin horses and this is way back in the Renaissance. Today there are 8 living founders (originally all carrying silver genes?). Thats a lot of generations for genes to pass on and cross over. If onyl one Origin stallion carried silver (hetero or homozygous) its more likely that it would have died out through those years because of a 50:50 chance the offspring would carry it on. You could safely have all the Origin horses carry silver (maybe the ZZ gene allows teh molecular bonding of Timekin genes in some way, and non silvers only became immune generations later through natural breeding?).

If all 4 horses had one copy of the silver gene, there would still be Timekins today without a single copy because of breeding through generations. Does that make sense?

The comic will be pretty awesome And hows the story of the Timekin's coming?

Haha, I can see Chess trying to translate ancient symbols and languages now I actually think she'd like it (and does that mean she's gonna be featured in your comic? )
I seriously can't wait to read this and get to the awesome plot twist! I can't say how much I love that you're putting so much thought and depth in - not just to the breed, but how they exist too. Its great to see

OH MY GOSH, I am so evil for not answering this. I've been trying to make a proper sheet...

And you're right, I'll have to keep thinking about it. It would be safe to say that all of them are silvers... HMMMMM...

Tattered-Dreams In reply to MissDudette [2012-04-06 16:35:58 +0000 UTC]

Haha, don't worry! We've all had tons of rl stuff to contend with

Are you re-making the breedsheet? I really like it, but there's definitely tons more you could cram in now XD. Plus, there's some cool 'Kins actually in existance which you could ask to feature on an updated version as 'success stories' or examples (Ink's new horse with the padlock would have to go on it! )

And yeah, having all the Origin horses carry silver would make it a little more likely for it to still be present in the 8 founders today And it would be something kind of unique, if that gene was somehow the thing that meshed with the Timekin mutation This is just so COOL! But definitely keep thinking on it - I'm sure you'll come up with something wacky, awesome and completely original as usual
