Description
"But Rena! Isn't that the name of a song?"Why yes, yes it is!
I started this because my good friend ~umbraldissonance composed this on stream last week (completely showing me up in this field >:I ) and I wanted to challenge my hand at making a more involved mock-up in the spirit of Bomberman Hero, which I didn't even know existed two weeks ago. It was just never really advertised here in this part of Canada when the N64 was hot.
To explain basically everything, I used this image as reference out of a random LP, and added a few of my own general touches and colour compromises. I'm happy to report, ~FriendlyFireFox , that I am pretty sure I adhered to the colour limits everywhere. I don't think I conflicted anything on the background/foreground colour counts (though I did use a lot of total colours), and the only thing that is questionable is the spike bomb in the HUD, to which I simply say it's made up of two sprites
Thanks to ~Registered111 for help with Bomberman himself, and those sexy windows. Seriously, those windows.
Also the mushroom/balloon enemies don't appear in that level, I think, but they're a classic Bomberman enemy, so I got lazy and added them as the very final detail.
As always, this is just a mock-up. A fake screenshot concept. This is not a real game. I'm sorry, everyone!
And with that, now I can get to working on the things I owe people from the spring xD Enjoy, everyone!

If I may say as such, I would like to think my mock-ups have come a long way from where they started. They were originally very lazy pieces of art that I realized were not all that hard to do but also were both enjoyable and very rewarding... now I'm at the point where I'm consciously trying to do the best job I can with them instead of just "finishing a product", so I'm hoping that the quality only improves from here D:

You are hilarious, seriously. I do adore you you know.
And yes indeed, I know how that goes as I have experienced the same thing myself with my own pony-art (I don't care what anybody says; my first pieces were horrifically sloppy due to minimal time spent on them and I only ever posted them online to begin with because FiM fanart was nowhere near as prevalent as it is today or dare I say as sophisticated in general, and I figured some people might find them mildly amusing for a brief instant before they faded away into obscurity, no harm no fowl). Suffice to say I try to make more of an effort today, and I do think your work reflects that as well.
Here is to both of us constantly striving to improve ourselves!

I'm afraid you will never be able to convince a soul that your beginning art was anything less than spectacular :P (Even if truthfully it may or may not be exactly as you describe it.) I have the odd feeling that if I'd been in the Pony art world a year before I was, I would be a much larger name in fanart. I don't mind where I am at all, of course, but I always do wonder how things could be different. First impressions are gigantic with people.
Here's to improvement indeed~

GBC! Compatible with older GBs too; not color-forced. It was a short game but also one of my first Bombermans, and it was pretty cute. It also featured some amazing art, in the sense that the art made no sense but made Bomberman look really cool xD

I'm sorry umbrella dis sonnet but making an 8-bit version of someone else's song without adding or changing any notes is not composing
It turned out very nicely! I'm not very familiar with the Bomberman series, but I like the depth of thoseΒ octagonalΒ platforms, and yes, the windows with their fluffy clouds. It may just be YouTube's compression, but your lava certainly looks more convincing than in the real game. Actually, all of the textures in the screenshot are pretty blurry... And really, a shiny silver metal texture following 8 dull blue wall faces? They could do well to hire you to make better ones for them. I mean, Super Mario 64 and OoT ran on the same platform...
I'm getting a bit off-topic now, but anyway, good job on this one! It makes a lot more sense now than it did in the stream, that's for sure.

i would like to note that 'compose' was the turnip's choice of words, and not my own. arrangement was the word she was looking for.
i'm rather partial to 'bitification,' myself, but most people just say demake and leave it at that. /shrug

I couldn't think of a better word shut up
Bomberman is not known for being a platformer, which is why this is so special in the first place. Other than Pocket Bomberman on the GBC, most (not all) Bomberman games are from an overhead view and four-way movement. Like Zelda games.
A-also, that's not... that's not lava... it's sand/non-descript generic flooring with NES-style random detailing. Because many NES games had that to make floors look less flat and dull

π: 0 β©: 0
ToastOverflow In reply to TaviTurnip [2013-10-18 04:23:38 +0000 UTC]
I can't think of a good one either but
I can see why that would be more special, then! Now make a platformer for every over franchise.
That's a relief, because the one in the game looks absolutely nothing like lava. I just have this preconceived notion that all platformers are 50% lava, so I figured those lower grains in the sand were bubbles. I guess all liquid and granular textures in pixel art are ambiguous,Β and I'm sure the palette you're working by didn't help matters. Maybe light orange/yellow with black grains would work better? But then, that would look like it's part of the platform...
Bah, I feel like I'm making a texture pack for MineCraft. At this rate, I may as well make CloudCraft in the meantime. You do a far better job at this than I ever would, I assure you.

It's not a remix if it's the same composition
As for the palette, these are the only colours you get . GB style is infinitely easier because you can both shade and texture everything on the screen, but you don't have to worry about contrasts not cooperating because everything is the same contrast value
Also yes, now you know how I feel about that comment I made to Miss Diamonds about Lyra

We need a word for chiptunification. Most people just call them "chiptune remixes"...
But...but... There is no yellow Or toupee! No wonder this game is set in aΒ spaceship/machine/factory/science fiction, they will never know the color of the sun as it fries their circuits and spoils their mushrooms D:
I suppose the goldish color you used for the oil would be too thick and harsh for sand without the additional red tinge that makes it simply a lighting effect? The way it is now, it's reminding me of this old thing:Β i98.photobucket.com/albums/l24β¦
Oh, and since I can't show you in a stream, I may a well link that one strange song that contradicts the rest of my playlist: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pSYRL⦠You can credit Harwick for showing me that. It's pretty brilliant.

TaviTurnip In reply to ToastOverflow [2013-10-19 00:39:00 +0000 UTC]
That plz account is fantastic.
I don't like using the term "chiptune" anyhow, for reasons and some more reasons... but they're definitely not remixes. It's closer to being an arrangement than a remix. And although it's a bit of a different category, it can absolutely be called a "port", like in the same way you can port console/arcade games to home/handheld (though... this is something more from the 1990s, and is far less common in 2013).
And yeah, there's like... no good reds or yellows :< (And that's a remote control, not an oil canister, but >_> It looks exactly like an oil can. I made it yellow so it would be distinguishable from the rest of the level being grey on grey on grey on grey. You know, not like modern FPS gaming.)
Harwick-sama has good taste in music

ToastOverflow In reply to TaviTurnip [2013-10-19 21:14:43 +0000 UTC]
Mr. Umbrella Dis Sonnet had the right idea of calling it an arrangement. I guess that makes you... an arranger. That sounds kind of disappointing. You should be a composer! You'll get all the naked anthro ponies! Just ask Mozart.
Well, maybe I thought you had oil there to make flames to go with that lava! Don't judge me, okay :c
When I first heard it several months ago, my immediate reaction was "Yes. This is musical gold. I shall save this." In the unlikely event that I ever host an art stream, that song will be played and savored, as it is our group's song (second to "Art of the Dress", but I've lost faith in its educational abilities).

The spikebomb isn't a problem at all, just imagine the spikes as transparent pixels through which you can see the background.
(If I had to point out one thing about this that I really like, it's that you made it less obvious where the tiles are than most games do)
π: 0 β©: 1
TaviTurnip In reply to FriendlyFireFox [2013-10-18 01:35:59 +0000 UTC]
The dark grey rows (pipes?) in the background honestly take up a slightly generous amount of tiling, but not by too much. I think my total variants, not including pipes that were simply rotated or mirrored in some way, came to... like eight? Eight 16x16 tiles anyhow. I didn't measure (many of) them in 8x8.Β
This may interest you, anyhow. Just for the fun's sake.
