Description Yyyep, there's more! I did these three between the various faces of Lapis. These were all done after angry Lapis, and before derp Lapis, as sort of breaks in between the troubles I had with his hair. Each of these hairs came out... much much better than Lapis's did, and took me far less effort and trouble, and Grassy's is the only head of hair that gave me very much of a problem, and it was really only the highlighting. The rest was pretty alright. Chatter's hair sparkles/bubbles are really tricky, though, and I expect a certain someone's gonna give me a "hrmm" on that when he gets back home soon

Critique and opinions still requested, and any input you guys can give me. I'd appreciate it

Overall I really like this piece,or better saying...those pieces.
First thing I noticed and admired about this piece is that you really nailed the show style. If you aim for show-accuracy,you did really well.I have just a few things to point out about show-accuracy.The open-eyed mares' eyes are a bit small, although the size of the closed-eyed one is just perfect.A tricky thing about MLP ponies is that the eyes are huge and the space between the eyes is less than one eye.A minor thing is that the uni horns are a bit too pointy for the MLP style and have just three segments,at least for common unicorns.

Another thing I noticed you did really well is the AA. Nearly everything is very smooth and well-done.
I just noticed you put some extra pixels together in the right part of the grey mare's hair.It could use some cleaning and AA as well. The shading seems soft and nice but the light dots around it seem a bit off.Dithering?
The orange mare's hair shading seems okay, but as there is a lot of contrast between the highlight color and the base color,I'd reccomend a bit of AA there as well.
The green mare's hair shading is just perfect. Nice contrast, good color choice and nice AA.

Another thing It's nice to point out is the color palette. I notice the colors you chose for shading are just darker colors of the base. A hue shift in the shading makes a more interesting palette. For example, shading gray with a purple-ish grey or shading green with a blueish green and highlighting with a yellow-ish hue. That really gives more life to the sprite and creates a more interesting color scheme. You should give it a try!

Hope to have have helped you out with some observation and words!

I am fiiiiiiiiiiinally reading this properly

It's worth noting to start that my personal preferred style is only mostly meant to emulate the show's style. I have certain preferences in proportion and sizing (mostly in eyes, hair, and leg length) that differ from the show, so they won't be identical. It's something that kind of happened over time since last year, and I didn't necessarily mean for things to happen that way, but they did

I did realize after I'd finished this that the pink in Fae's hair wasn't really optimal, so you're right about that. In general I find red is one of those tricky colours to shade when you want it to be vibrant. Dark red is easy, but lighter red is tough... it's something I think I'm still working on figuring out, even now.

Also you're not the only one to point out that I don't hue shift much. It definitely does happen on some arts, but in others I just don't find it necessary. It depends more on the overall type of colour I'm using. I'm not really one to try to be stylistic if something doesn't really call for it, which is the opposite of more high-level pixel artists who try very hard to add as much style as possible. I've learned that I'm ultimately kind of simple in what I do, so :c I do appreciate this line of advice (and am impressed you noticed), and I will definitely try it more openly sometime, but I can't promise it's an aspect I'll change in everything I do. My art's so inconsistent in the first place that if I did adopt it, it's something that would come and go on a whim.

Anyhow, sorry it took me forever to read this ;_; I appreciate it a lot, though! I wish I could have approved it back when it was new, but you know how that went...

No prob! what matters now is that you were able to read it,and I hope it was helpful to you somehow.

I see.You did emulate the show style very well.

Color choices are sometimes tough in pixel art,I agree.

And,i get it.Hue shifting was more like a stylistic advice to make the color scheme more interesting hehe. But choice is all yours whether to use it or not.

No worries about that,really!

You did a really wonderful job here! I really admire the patience pixel artists have to anti-aliase and you did it so well hehe~

Since you ask for crit,I'll get more into details there and try to help ya! c:

Ahh, hey, I'm sorry... I never got a chance to read your critique, and then one day I decided it was time to do it, and dA told me it expired and it was too late to approve it, and then it deleted it from my inbox, so I couldn't even read it -_- I apologize deeply. I really wanted to read it. I really appreciate it when people do that kind of thing for me, but now it's gone and that effort of yours was wasted. I'm really really sorry about that.

I'd have to be a total nut not to vouch for my silly green girl; she just looks happy and content here. Nice touch with the flower, too (I love drawing that bit). Fae looks pretty nice too, but her mane colour's a little too vivid for my taste. Her glasses kinda makes up for it, though~

TaviTurnip In reply to CaineScroll [2013-02-25 13:08:10 +0000 UTC]

Grasswhistle will always be the best Pony ~

I suppose you're right about Fae, thinking about it. I intentionally gave her somewhat bright hair because I thought it matched the style, even though Alier had dark hair when I did her (surprise; Fae is a Ponified human). Someone did tell me the highlights here were too bright, but it's possible that the whole mane is that way, even :S I will consider this next time I do her!

With pixels? How do you put details like the glasses and the little flower in with pixels?
I think the green gal's my favourite, but the red haired one's got some really pretty eyes

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TaviTurnip In reply to GreenTriceratops [2013-02-25 00:52:28 +0000 UTC]

Fae is certainly very pretty

The flower, I have to be upfront, was a very easy thing to include. Glasses, though? They are deceptively hard to pixel at times, depending on what you're doing. I think I got lucky here, even though the dark teal is kind of a weird colour, but they came out decently in the end and I'm glad for that. Sometimes, though, they give me so much trouble xD

I like the shinyness of Grasswhistle's hair, and the colors you used for her mouth, AND... the flower looks very nice.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TaviTurnip In reply to Pweanut [2013-02-25 00:26:13 +0000 UTC]

The colours on her mouth actually took a good five or six minutes to figure out. It can be really surprising how the addition of certain colours or patterns can change how an open mouth looks.

And that flower was a last-minute addition and it's a little tiny but I'm glad I added it <3

The flower adds the needed contrast from the green, since her eyes are shut.

I'll learn one day. one day.

TaviTurnip In reply to Pweanut [2013-02-25 01:13:43 +0000 UTC]

That's actually kind of awesome to learn. I'm glad you know these things

Several of my friends say that Grasswhistle's greatest assets are her eyes and her flower, which counter and complement her dual green palette perfectly. It wasn't anything I planned when I designed her. I just got lucky xD

Yes, that is very good of you, and that's what I thought the answer may be. Well done xP

I'm not sure what I said exactly, but my bad habit is that I literally want to give red eyes to every single character in any instance ever. I find them extremely appealing and the temptation is often really powerful. Grassy nearly got that treatment, as you know, but other people convinced me to try orange/yellow and purple instead, and I'm glad they did.
