Description
It's surprisingly hard to find free puppet rigs for Flash without building one from scratch (which I am wholly unprepared to do) HOWEVER bronies exist and they've produced a bunch of puppet rigs and tutorials and etc so I used Pinkie Pie here to practice. And by practice I mean attempt flash puppet animation for the first time.I wasn't ever that keen on puppet animation as it doesn't look very fun (and, big surprise, it isn't haha but at least I have a better understanding of it now) but the fact that so few traditional 2D animation jobs exist in the world was making me anxious and I thought it would be a safer, smarter move to at least get puppet animation under my belt in case I need to produce it in the future for a job.
It's actually a bit more similar to traditional animation than I expected, but is also a lot fiddlier and I did end up drawing a couple of my own assets when I couldn't get symbols to line up how I wanted.... and the proportions morph a bit.... but overall it looks.... surprisingly official! And that!!!! Is fantastic! So there u go hahaha. This took a full day to make, but I guess it was my first go at the method anyway.
If your device can't display flash, I also uploaded the animation to my youtube, here (first video, ayyy)!!

Thanks to Double Rainboom's video tutorials and rigs I was able to make this!
Made in Adobe Animate CC.

my only complaints are the camera shake (as everyone else already mentioned) and a somewhat subtle detail that when she flips, her cutie mark is still there? since ponies only have the mark on one side (from what i remember anyway) her flank should have been blank (oh look a rhyme) when she flipped to the other side. That's really my only complaint, otherwise, this looks really good!

The cutiemark is on both sides of the pony, actually 8w8 sometimes the toys dont match the show, but in the show they definitely have it on both sides
and yeah, i understand about the camera movement already. too late to go back and fix that now

This animation is nice, but I REALLY hope puppet animation never replaces real 2D animation that involves drawing each frame separating.
While it looks fluid in the right hands, most of the time it looks stilted like Johnny Test.

I am not a mlp fan, but the animation looks is so fluid and amazing ^^ You did great...the only compliment is the shaking camera that makes me think Pinkie is very heavy and it kinda distracts from the animation, and that is my ONLY compliant, but the rest is superB!

Something to hypnotizing about the animation. High energy, just like Pinkie!

This looks great! Puppet animation is honestly a lot easier in After Effects but of course you won't get the same look as you do with lots of symbol swapping.

Oh yeah puppet animation can sure be a pain! Making custom puppets is quite time consuming as well. That's usually what I do myself. I use dragon bones (Before I used after effects), don't have flash available unfortunately.

Puppet animation is fidgety, difficult, frustrating, not as fun as traditional, and usually has way less charm (though there's a couple shows that use puppetting really well.) And unfortunately puppeting is all too common in the current cartoon industry.
So practicing with it is a good call. If you had to, I reckon you could easily pass for a job with animating puppets. This looks very good.

I assume you moved the camera up a bit to accommodate for the swinging tail? It gives the funny effect that Pinkie seems super heavy and makes the ground shake

hey, wanna try animating in opentoonz?
i made/working on a free to the public pony puppet in opentoonz
currently, it has only one "view" but over time more will be made.
also, Opentoonz can prepare you better for animation jobs, because the possibilities with opentoonz is way broader than adobe animate.
example: it can prepare you for a toonboom production pipeline
and its free!

woah your first rig animation? this is fantastic!
also custom posing/assets is a sign of a good rig animator, it took me a while of working in a studio with this sorta stuff before I properly understood it so im kinda envious haha! you'll def have no trouble finding work imo! good job!

Your animation is A LOT more expressive than other animations in the MLP fandom, haha! Most of the others are just talking then maybe a head turn and lifting a hoof, oh, don't forget a walk cycle preset they didn't even animate xD

Not a fan of mlp but what I've seen of it this looks spot on. For first time pupping I think the change of pose was really smooth. My only real critique is the 'thump'/ camera shake..I think it comes either too soon or too late...I'm still trying to figure out what feels off with the timing of that.

TawnySoup In reply to The-Gij [2019-05-17 22:49:29 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I'm very new to camera movements!!! 8w8 I think maybe i could have improved it if i made the camera 'jump' wider, so it feels less like a weird blip? Like a smooth movement that swerves into the air instead of jumping, something like that. It's something to work on!!! And don't worry, I'm not rly a fan of mlp either xD It's just a good place to go to for these kinds of resources, haha

dude everything except like. the very final pose(basically because of the eye) looks like you literally took it out of the show??? wth???

TawnySoup In reply to Lionblaze03 [2019-05-17 22:47:24 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I sorta wanted her to look off the the right of the camera as if someone was stood there? But it doesn't really work very well with the profile angle does it haha
Thank you!!!
