Description
Just a collection of sketches of my OC, Ellie. So far all i can say is she's part of the AFSOC Tactical Air Control Party. These were mostly done as practice and refinement of her look, just to get that sweet spot where i have a consistent look when i draw her
these are all in somewhat chronological order so you can see the progress on her design
-early random sketches and doodles of her in some poses
-looks i was testing out for Ellie, the ones to the left of her in full gear, while the ones to the right are of much lighter loadouts for her
-The middles sketches are basically the two main looks for Ellie. The one to the left is of her in operator loadout, with civilian clothing and a light vest with some magazines, leg holster (though i may change it to a hip holster, see above) with sidearm and an M416. The one to the left is her TACP/JTAC loadout, where aside from the basic combat and survival stuff like an M4A1, magazines, ballistic helmet, first aid kit, sidearm, etc, she also carries the Modular Tactical System (MTS) mounted on her RBAV-AF, and additional communications equipment in her bag
-moar recent sketches of Ellie, all for the sake of practicing and refining her and also coming up with stories about her. the one of her sitting down was based on what ive read about the JTACs, who are Airmen that work closely with Army units, trying to fit in to their attached unit, going on constant patrols (with hardly a break since most units will only have one JTAC attached to them, meaning that while the other guys in the unit can take turns or shifts going on patrol or missions, JTACs who come back to base after a sortie would be met with a bottle of water, fresh mags and batteries and are off on the next patrol asap) but are invaluable in what they can bring to the fight, where aside from being capable warfighters they have several assets on call to assist when necessary
-a proper front and rear view of Ellie in TACP setup and another ink figure drawing of her in TACP loadout

I can never get the NVG mount right when I draw FAST helmets or OPS CORE helmets of any kind.

references are invaluable when drawing technical stuff, especially if you want to draw something very detailed and as accurate as possible
draw it often enough and you'll start drawing it easily enough. unless you have to, don't sweat at having to draw anything super accurately. as long as others can identify for something for what it is supposed to be, mission accomplished!

Very nice friend! I've been eagerly waiting for some USAF sketches from you and you never fail to impress! Outstanding!

thanks, it's something that i've been working on quite sometime for a background for my OC, and the AFSOC was an interesting group

I like the attention to the gear. I personally I would stay with the thigh holsters or maybe a chest holster. Hip holster can be a bit difficult to use with full kit.

thanks, its a constant work in progress trying to get her look consistent
she could go with a chest holster for her 'light' setup to give her better mobility. i realised that, the hip holster will instead go with her undercover/incognito look where she can wear a jacket to conceal it (coming soon)

Dude these sketches look great, nice kit as usual. But she needs more stuff..LOL. She is way to uncomplicated looking to be an AFSOC JTAC...

thanks, she's a constant work in progress. i'm constantly learning more and more about what they carry, but i've also had to think about compromise.

If you want some good input I was a JTAC candidate and I have a friend that was an instructor at the school house in Fallon, NV.

thanks, i'll keep that in mind
btw whats the average rank for AFSOC TACPs/JTACs, do they include officers?
π: 0 β©: 1
NicholasWatersArt In reply to TChenArt [2014-04-26 19:38:33 +0000 UTC]
TACP's and the like are usually Enlisted but former aviators are sometimes brought into the program and they are officers. So it is not unheard of to have an Officer as a TACP/JTAC. Usually though they are FAC's.

thanks, that clears things up somewhat
next question(s): how are they selected to be a part of another unit, say in A-stan or wherever there is a US military unit deployed? are they on a 'by loan' basis (for how long usually or is this subjective?) or do these units request for one or two and AFSOC sends whoever is available or on standby? do they get to choose?
and did i get it right about how some platoons or units will have only one JTAC attached to them and thus they are the only one on call and have to go outside the wire with each combat patrol/op?

They are attached to a unit usually before the unit deploys. A lot of times the TACP and JTAC will get sent to the unit during their pre-deployment work-ups and train with them. They will return to home station and conducted any certifications and or training they are required and them will return to the unit just before deployment and step off with them. They will remain as a "bolt-on" with that unit until the end of deployment and then they will return home and to their STS. Β Yeah most of the time there will be one JTAC unless the unit had it's own "organic" JTACS like my unit had. We had our own JTAC "AIR DET" and each Boat detachment had about 2-3 JTACS attached to them. Β There is some cool stuff about JTACS that I am not sure is common knowledge so I am going to ask a buddy to make sure I am not putting anything out that is OPSEC or considered sensitive. It would be inline with your story but I need to make sure it isn't crossing a line before I put it out there. The JTAC would go on missions whenever they can get Air assets...if there is no air they might not roll out. Getting no bullshit dedicated CAS is not as easy as it sounds and a lot of times units have CAS by location and for certain time frames only. Otherwise it is a 911 call and is a bad fucking day.

if you're worry about OPSEC you could just send me notes about it.Β
btw how do they operate in foreign soil without US air assets, do they use local air assets (with permission) or bring their own (UAVs?)
just reply with notes

NicholasWatersArt In reply to TChenArt [2014-05-02 20:28:47 +0000 UTC]
I don't know if we do controls with foreign aircraft but I am sure we do. NATO countries train to control other countries aircraft because in a NATO mission you might have FRENCH aircraft or BRITISH Aircraft Β dropping ordnance or be on station. Like in Afghanistan ISAF forces work with NATO aircraft all the time. Nah man if it is OPSEC I can't even note it to you...LOL. UAV's yeah units can bring their own up to a certain size. My old unit had it's own UAV's of various sizes that we took on deployment with us and used. I will go into more detail in a note.

Liking the progress here, any chances of her making cameos in Resolve, or it's really just a character for your own stories?

TChenArt In reply to NDTwoFives [2014-04-21 13:52:37 +0000 UTC]
as much as i'd like to be able to put her in a cameo in Resolve she'll just remain a character in my fantasies (that sounds wrong, but i don't care )
