Why is it that I always end up alone?
This idea has been bouncing around in my mind since KH III, especially after seeing others in the fandom talk about the ending. Kairi always ends up alone at the end of the games, in one way or another. After KH I, she's on the island waiting for Riku and Sora to return. Sure, she has her other friends, and the people who live there, but she's still separated from the people that she cares most about.
After KH II, she's left alone while Sora and Riku go off on their mark of mastery adventure, and well, KH III ends while her probably feeling the most alone out of all of this.
All I know is that I hope that the future KH game take advantage of the fact that Kairi is probably feeling very lost, lonely, and useless by this point. It could be a really interesting story-arc for her.
Also, thinking about this has made me sad that Kairi wasn't in DDD. I'm sure there was a technical reason, like budget or some game design thing, why she didn't really appear in the game, but there really wasn't a story reason why shouldn't have just...gone along with them and hung out in Yen Sid's tower while they were taking the exam. In fact, it seems to me that it would be more in character for her to want to be there for them. It would have been really interesting too, especially once Lea shows up.
I actually started this drawing about two months ago, but the background refused to do what I wanted to do, so I put it off for a while. xD I'm fairly happy with how it turned out in the end, though!
Any comments/constructive criticism would be most appreciated!

I hold onto hope that Kingdom Hearts IV finally gives Kairi some spotlight after jettisoning most of the Xehanort arc out of the way. But my cynical sidedoesn't hold out hope. Its kinda obvious that Nomura's more interested in his cast of villains, tragic backstories and the mystery plot than he is about what characters he already has (kinda obvious with the Final Fantasy characters that have faded away in recent years)
Kairi I think suffers the worst for this and someone who's personality kinda faded away from a cheeky tomboy to a blander palette in KH III. I dunno. Best case scenario we get a section of KH IV or whatever card game spin off to give Kairi a chance to blossom as a character on her own adventure.
Otherwise its back to the Sora and Riku show again while they repress some uh.. Tasteful feelings for one another.
Really sucks since there's a lot you could do with Kairi from the perspective of a helplessness inadequacy kinda arc where she gets Keyblade skills to pay the bills, kicks ass and save's Sora's bony ass wearing sunglasses and looking badass.
By the way dude you're pretty masterful at sunsets man. Rock on.

I hold some hope for Kairi still, especially since I feel as though KH III had some unusual problems for a Kingdom Hearts games that I hope won't persist into later volumes. Of course, I'm an optimist, so I like to hope for the best, even if I'll be ultimately proven wrong. ^^
I really want a Kairi spin-off game, tho.

Well if the recent ReMIND trailer is to be believed we might just be getting the lethal dosage of Kairi action we've all been waiting for. Whether it'll amount to anything plot wise remains to be seen, but part of me does share in your optimism.

Nomura created her, but can't even come up with a way to actually make her useful to the plot. She is wasted potential because he just refuses to use her for anything other than a plot device, as people have labeled her. It sucks, because I really like Kairi and she gets way too much hate -- mainly from girls. I love how Nomura will use Namine and Xion -- two girls whom couldn't even exist without Kairi.... But can't find manage to make any real room for Kairi herself. And "killing" her in KHIII, just seemed like a cop-out because he ran out of ideas for her.
It's like he secretly hates her, for some reason. It actually kind of pisses me off. Poor girl... Monty Oum gave Kairi far more respect in his Dead Fantasy series.

I mean, I'm frustrated with it too, but he hasn't had problems like this with his other trios before, so I'm hoping that the way that he's been handling her has been more because he had a plan for her. A poorly executed one, but a plan nonetheless.

I'm so excited for the KHIII manga. My biggest complain about KHIII was the pacing of the story-line, so I'm really excited to see how it's handled in manga form. I also want to see how they handle Kairi, of course.

At least with how III ended, it sets up Kairi's arc to occur during the next saga and HOPEFULLY give her a game; because let's be honest, after what Sora did, there's 0 chance in hell she's just going to sit on the sidelines and wait.
