Description
Mount OlympusWar had come to the very doorstep of Olympus itself. Within his grand chamber, along among empty seats upon his throne, Zeus could hear the battle taking place outside. A force of the very gods against these foolish invaders who would seek to supplant the King of Olympus. This did not worry him nor did it make him contemplate his rule ending this day for it would not. Even if the Fates decreed it he would not go quietly from his seat of power.
Even below in the mortal world he knew they would be able to see it. A growing darkness of clouds swirling about their skies while their senses would trick their minds into believe the clash of steel and the sound of war were the mere rumbles of thunder. They would look but never know.
They were coming even now, the ones who lead the charge on this futile attempt on the throne of Olympus. Zeus had seen to it that all those who would stand against him were dealt with. The gods whom he knew would be in favor of these invaders he saw imprisoned and left to wait until this conflict was over as to face further punishment after. When they would arrive these foolish overseers would be dealt with one way or another.
Finally Zeus solitude was interrupted when Hermes, the messenger god, had arrived. He was wounded and limping from the battle, blood trailing behind him on the floor. Zeus barley glanced to know that the wounds were meant to only injure not kill.
“Hermes.” The king of Olympus addressed. “Even in battle you are still ever the faithful messenger.”
Upon reaching the base of the stair to Zeus’ throne he dropped to his knees, saying “Father, they’re coming. They’ll be upon your doorstep any moment! Perhaps it would be best to yield or-”
A slam of his fist silenced Hermes as he boomed “I will not! I have sat upon this throne centuries before you were born! I, like the very stones upon which this mount stand, will not yield!” Their attention was drawn to the pounding of the gates to the chamber, Zeus then calmly saying to Hermes “Go. Leave us. I shall handle this.”
As Hermes limped away Zeus’ attention stayed on the door. Pounding after pounding he waited until finally the great gates finally broke open, swinging with a violet shove against the marble pillars near that held the great chamber up. Smoke bellowed into the room but never reached Zeus. Even from the other end of the room he could see as each of the trespassers entered into the chamber.
The first he could see was the towering form of the “super-human” Giganta, kneeling down to see into the room before spotting the king of Olympus. Next to come was the Cheetah, a mortal tainted by the magic of Hecate that Zeus could smell off of her even from his distance. Following her was her master, Circe the centuries old sorceress, another of Hecate’s followers but with a pungent air of superiority Zeus did not find threatening nor earned. And finally to arrive was another mortal of no power and no great heritage, only a man with a gun as his weapon of choice: Steve Trevor.
With his assault rifle pointed at Zeus Steve quipped “Hi there. We’re the new housekeepers. So get your ass off that throne.”
Sneering Zeus replied “You dare speak to me, mortal? A single speck of no true worth like you? I could crush you like an ant here and now.”
“I’d think of myself more of a cockroach. A lot tougher to kill than you think.” He smirked, still keeping his gun trained on him. “I’m not going to ask again. Get up off that throne.”
Despite this Zeus looked over and said “Is this all of your own doing, Circe? Has the child of Helios finally come to claim retribution from my sister-wife for the so-called crimes against your name?”
“Hera’s time will come, Zeus. Be certain of that.” Circe replied. “But it’s not my retribution you should fear.”
The sound of a horse’s cry from above caught Zeus’ attention as he could see a shape flying down towards the glass dome covering of the center of the grand chamber. A dark haired winged mare came crashing through, eyes a blaze of red, and circled down before landing just in front of Trevor and the others. Mounted upon it was the armored figure of an all too familiar face. At first, given how she was dressed, Zeus had mistaken her for her mother, but the sight of the younger face had made it all too clear who it truly was who had brought this conflict to his home.
“Diana.” He addressed as Wonder Woman dismounted Pegasus.
Removing her helmet to better show her face she only replied “Father.” With the coldest tone.
“So you finally learned the truth.” He responded to being called as such by her, the one child he’d thought unknowing of her heritage.
“My mother told me everything, Zeus. It was the last thing she said before her death came. By YOUR orders!” She pointed in defiance while “How could you do this? She was loyal to you. We all were! And this is how you repay us?”
Furious he boomed “Do not speak to me of recompense when you, the very child I brought to life from nothing but clay and blood, marches her armies upon my kingdom!”
The sudden loud rumble of thunder from outside indicated Zeus’ anger went hand-in-hand with his power. Circe and the others may have flinched or cringed at the sound but Wonder Woman remained as stern as steel in the face of the King of Olympus.
Wonder Woman continued with “I fought for you countless times. For all of Olympus. I bested the Gorgon. I stopped the return of Cronos. I’ve saved your life and the lives of all the gods before. Even when I lost Donna, Mala, all my friends and sisters I remained loyal to you. Why take my mother and leave her to rot in the Underworld, Zeus? She was loyal. She was faithful. Why? I deserve that much, father.”
Zeus answered greatly “Her punishment was not of her own doing, child. That sin falls upon you!” Surprised by that remark, and seeing it on hers as well as the faces of the others, Zeus smirked at her surprise before explaining “You were created not only as a child of the Amazons but as a tool, Diana. I granted your mother’s wish and brought you to life with my own power so that one day you would show mankind their folly in forgetting the gods that once ruled them. When you finally went to their world I expected you to prove yourself to me by making them understand the true might of Olympus. Instead you treated them with compassion and understanding, instead of treating them with your blade! So many time you had wronged me yet Hera was always there to claim your usefulness to me. You imprisoned Ares in Tartarus. You stripped Hercules of his power and exiled him to the world of mortals. Often I had seen you lose yourself from your ways and too often I was lenient. An example had to be made. And your mother owed me her very life after I had granted yours. But you only see it as an injustice and decide to march upon my world with an army of Amazons and these servants of Hecate at your side. For what? You seek to gain vengeance upon the father of Olympus?”
Stepping forward Wonder Woman retorted “All of my actions against your sons were only to save you and the people of Earth! I care for them because they, like my sisters, they have earned their place in the world. You on the other hand, Zeus, have lost yourself in your mad seize of power! Your ways are old, barbaric and without compassion or mercy! These will not save the world but send it further back into the hell it came from!”
“And you would leave it in the hands of men like this?” Zeus pointed at Steve behind her. “Men whose very masters order the deaths of so many and claim it in the name of ‘peace’ and ‘justice’? They are more like myself than you realize, foolish girl!”
For a moment Wonder Woman hesitated, glancing back at Steve. She could see in him the same look of perplexity she seemed to have on the matter. It was true that even people who claimed to be “on the right side” had made terrible decisions; her own self notwithstanding. She’d seen good people turned into monsters or people she thought were good revealed to be monsters all along. She’d seen so much in man’s world but there was always something else.
“There’s one thing they will always have that you don’t, Zeus. It’s something I’ve learned from them and something I’ve fought for. My true mission in man’s world was never to fight for you, it was for hope.”
Hearing that Steve spoke aloud, not caring who heard, as he said “I love you.”
After Diana had given him a small Zeus scoffed and replied “Hope? A child’s dream. Clearly your mother’s death was not enough of an example. So be it.” He finally stood from his throne, holding his hand out and declaring “Listen well, daughter of mud, when this battle is over you and your compatriots will suffer! I will cast you in the darkest pits of Tartarus where Hades will see you suffer for the rest of your existence! Poseidon shall sink your island into the depths to be lost forever! And then, ONLY then, will I go down and bring the mortals to yield under MY rule as they should have stayed long ago!”
Putting her helmet back on Wonder Woman countered with “No! Your rule ends today, Zeus! To save my sisters, my home and my world, I, Diana of Themyscira, daughter of Hippolyta, challenge you for the throne of Olympus!”
To add to her challenge Wonder Woman drew her blade, Zeus surprised when it was in full view for him to see. Drawing from her sheath was a remarkable and powerful sword that the king of Olympus knew all too well. He did not speak of it but the Fates had always warned him that one of his children would one day overthrow him. To think it would be a woman of all things.
“The God Killer.” Zeus stated upon seeing it. “Hmph. So you found my father’s sword and would use it to supplant me. Very well.” He descended the stairs of his throne while Diana made sure all those who accompanied her stood back. “You escaped death once, Diana, but you will not be so fortunate this time.” Finally at the bottom of the steps, his powerful scepter in hand, his last words before they fought were “Tell me, Diana, before you die, do you think my death would truly give you retribution?”
“This isn’t revenge, Zeus.” She declared as she readied herself. “It’s justice!”
