Not the most mathematically accurate, but I can see where you're coming from. (absolute valued number are neither positive nor negative) I like XKCD too.

This doesn't make any sense. |x|+y OR -y.
The only instance that y cannot = -y is if you're referring to a distance or any unit that doesn't make sense to refer to in a negative, which is not the case here.

Absolute value is positive, as distance cannot be negative. x > 0 is the only option.
