I had a wee story idea about a little baby green sunfish who got turned into a humanoid by a lonely and slightly nutso scientist. He kept her hidden away, but he loved her and taught her everything he knew. She grew quickly, and 7 years later, she was a young woman. The lonely scientist wanted the best for her and decided that she needed social interaction with people of her age and likeminded, so he sent her to a little college to make friends. It was there she met the love of her life, and everything was perfect. One day, on a field trip to the river where they were studying aquatic ecosystems, the students decided to go for an evening swim. The sunfish girl was happy to share such a wonderful time with the young woman she loved, until an irresponsible speed boat driver came crashing through the reeds. He had been drinking and lost control. The boat would have killed the girlfriend if the sunfish girl hadn't pushed her out of the way. But the speedboat ran straight over the sunfish girl and she floated surrounded by a cloud of red. She awoke, some time later, submerged in a tank, soft music reverberated through the water. When she opened her eyes, she saw her father and the girl she loved standing outside the tank. The sunfish girl swam to the top only to find a grate blocking her way, no way to reach the surface. In anguish, she looked to her father, who shook his head and pointed to a medical chart -- the propeller had sliced her back open and broken her ribs, puncturing her human lungs. With only a possible 10% of lung capacity when she healed, they knew she'd never breathe again--if it weren't for her sunfish gills, she would have died. Unable to speak without air to pass over her vocal chords, all she could do was cry invisible tears, knowing she'd never get to be with her loved one again. She was trapped in a tank, between worlds, and felt all alone. But the young human woman never left her sunfish friend for long. She visited as often as she could, until somehow they could find a way for them to be together again. She read her stories and brought her news of the world, games, and movies. It wasn't perfect, but it would do.
