If like me you crave critique and feedback, but only ever get "nice work" comments, here are some tips to get what you want!

First of all, allow me to briefly elaborate on what I mean by critique and feedback.

Critique - Noun, A detailed analysis and assessment of something.

Someone who offers you a critique gifts you with a full evaluation of the good and bad parts of your piece, as well as offering ideas for its improvement.

Feedback - Noun, Information about reactions to a product.

They let you know which parts they like / don't like, and possibly how the piece made them feel.

Comments such as "Great work!" "Awesome" don't fall into either of these categories.

Reply to them with a question.

Asking a question prompts a response. Not only that, but it forces them to take a look at your work again! Below are two screenshots where I have used this technique.

Common questions you could ask in response to a comment are:

What is your favourite part?

Do you think anything needs improving?

Is the idea behind it clear enough?

When you finally do receive the feedback, be gracious. They are not obliged to give you their opinion of your piece. If you act like a prima donna after receiving a little bit of feedback (which you asked for), then you have a lot of growing up to do.

Remember to thank them both times for their time as well! A little politeness can go a long way.

My reply to travelgirlxx sparked a whole string of conversation between us, and she provided me wonderful feedback!

Comment back
They've left you a comment, so why not return the favour? If you find yourself frustrated by their lack of wanted feedback, don't get angry with them, comment on one of their pieces with the same level of detail that you would expect. Basically, give what you want to receive.

Some example comments could be:

"Perhaps the eyes could be drawn better but the rest of the detail is lovely!"

"I'm not sure that the blurriness of the text adds to this, but it's really well made nonetheless."

"I adore the rhythm of this piece! But it seems to slow down in the middle, is that intentional?"

Always try and point out a part of the piece which really blows you mind. Are the eyes exceptionally beautiful? Is it framed expertly? Are the colours beautifully saturated that it all comes alive? Or quite the opposite, are they soft and calming?

X) I've never had any comments at all, otherwise this'd be great. Pretty sure it has something to do with my drawings being extremely average compared to everyone else.

There are groups which help you get comments - groups.deviantart.com/?qh=&… - or ask some critique questions in your deviation details so people have something to respond to Plus there seems to be a universal fear here of giving critique... as some people go freakin' apeshit about it XD

Sometimes I just feel like giving a fav spammer  a good, long talking-to.  They don't care about the art and only want the page views artists give them by posting a "thank-you" comment.

I hate those "Thank you" comments personally, which is why I only fav pieces for inspiration or resource.

Thank you! And thank you for the little feature Spreading the word of this will hopefully help stop the "I mustn't critique in case I offend the artist" mindset which DA has somehow fallen into...

Rutana [2013-01-25 16:32:27 +0000 UTC]

I see that happening to me once in a while... XD

The problem with giving critique is, that some people react very angered or attacked, when you give them a constructive critique. They don't see the difference between a critique and "your art is bad", and take it personal. And I'm talking of the good kind of critique here, that points out positive and negative ways.
So unless someone specificly askes for critique, I'm very cautious. Sometimes I even ask beforehand if they want a critique or give them a little bit of a tease, like "I really love this, even though you made a small mistake" and let them ask what I mean, before I answer in an elaborate critique, because then I know they want to get critique.

It's a tough topic, unfortunally, so I actually appreciate it when someone ask for a more detailed comment ^^

I know what you mean! As a consequence, I really feel DA is falling into a rut of "must not critique in case I offend" mentality... which is a real shame for those of us who crave it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rutana In reply to TehAngelsCry [2013-01-27 02:27:55 +0000 UTC]

It's not a DA problem though, you find it on any art community sadly.
Best thing to do probably is just asking for constructive critique - or put a stamp in your art description as a sign of accepting critique.

TehAngelsCry In reply to Rutana [2013-01-27 17:19:38 +0000 UTC]
