Description A still-image displaying each stage of construction in a higher resolution can be seen here: tekka-croe.deviantart.com/art/…

(Naughty bits omitted in order to keep this SFW, while also fully displaying Reina's physique.)

A friend of mine had in the past expressed some confusion over the construction of Reina's cybernetic limbs.  This series of illustrations helped to clear up his confusion, and hopefully will help out anyone else's uncertainty.

The structure of Reina's cybernetic limbs echoes that of natural human limbs- a rigid endoskeleton supporting a series of interleaved synthetic muscle bundles, covered in a flexible tactile-sensory "skin".  The inner frames are attached to Reina's skeleton by synthorg bone anchors.  When the limbs are in their fully-assembled state, the break-lines between the organic and synthetic skin are sealed with an organic polymer gel which prevents infections and related complications.  The knees contain compact servo-motors, however they are low-speed, high-torque motors which only engage when exceptional application of force-over-time is required.

The arms each contain a utility module located along the back of the forearm.  This module can contain a variety of backup/emergency equipment- typically either a retractable blade or a miniature mass accelerator (in Reina's case, both modules contain retractable blades by default).  The legs possess an exaggerated curve compared to natural human legs.  Their internal structure allows for the shins to have a very slight degree of flexibility, allowing for incredible speed and the ability to exert or absorb huge amounts of force.

If I have some of these, my emotions would believe that the process of quick detaching/reattaching should hurt. So even if it did not really hurt, I would believe that it ought to, so that psychosomatically it would seem to hurt. I am unable to walk without holding on to things. I might therefore wish to go to the NI universe, as even an exotic-skel alone would easily be able to adjust for my balance deficit on account of my cerebral palsy. Interesting!

How deep do the enhancements go? Down too the bone?

In the case of her cybernetic limbs, those white anchors are grafted directly to the skeleton.  If you're referring to the black sections of the anchors, there's a bit of organic muscle matter between those and the bones.

Okay sorry to ask another question, but what about internal vital organs like the liver lungs and what not?

Tekka-Croe In reply to thormemeson [2016-06-24 23:54:30 +0000 UTC]

Ah, those (along with her head and torso) are mostly organic.  Their functionality is, however, enhanced by genetic and chemical augmentation.  Her torso does contain a number of cybernetic bits, including bio-monitors, hormonal regulators, medical damage-mitigation modules, etc. as well as multi-purpose sockets (those plugs visible on her forward ribs and hips).

If not then she, and by extension the rest of the KAIROS test subjects, are certainly pretty close.  While there are bound to be a handful of cyborgs with similar proportional amounts of cybernetics, the thing that really sets the KAIROS apart is how integrated their cybernetics are, particularly their neural augmentations.  The KAIROS represent a unique blending of organic and cybernetic, with the facilitation of genetic and chemical augmentation.

How do you get around the problem of improved performance versus limbs shearing off at the bone joints where the natural parts cannot endure the increased stresses of movement?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tekka-Croe In reply to Brad-NSFW [2016-06-02 14:59:19 +0000 UTC]

The bone-anchors themselves are not precisely the same material as organic bone, but can be grafted onto it.  The grafting process in this case used a "toothed" pattern where the anchors meet the natural skeleton, meaning that the graft runs along both horizontal and vertical planes, improving its strength.  The natural skeleton has also undergone gradual chemical augmentation to increase its density and toughness far beyond normal limitations.  Additionally, the anchor-points for the synthetic muscle structure are spread out over a relatively large surface area on each limb, distributing stress and further reducing the strain felt by the core joint.

Edit:  It should be noted that in the case of a normal human, what you bring up absolutely would be an issue, and the weakest link likely would be where the bone-anchor is grafted to the skeleton.  The KAIROS, such as Reina, were engineered specifically to undergo this kind of extensive augmentation.

I always wondered what your solution for this was. I figured there had to be some sort of skeletal reinforcement to compensate for the sheer amount of torque these limbs would put on the natural bone, but I wasn't sure what. If Ghosts of Onyx and sci-fi logic en masse have taught me anything, though, it's that chemical tempering is generally the best - and least fatal - course of action. I assume her natural musculature received a tune-up as well?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tekka-Croe In reply to renaldohoek [2016-06-04 03:43:59 +0000 UTC]

Indeed.  Through a combination of genetic engineering and long-term chemical augmentation, her organic musculature is extremely dense.  Her strength and speed are further enhanced by thin ribbons of artificially cultivated synthorg muscle strategically grafted into her natural musculature.

Is there an in-universe reason she still possesses human-typical digits on her hands and feet, as opposed to any other kind?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tekka-Croe In reply to Ofidian [2016-06-02 05:15:13 +0000 UTC]

For the feet, there isn't really an in-universe reason for her to have individual human-like toes.  That's just a component of her character's aesthetic.  Visually, she's meant to appear as a sort of blend of organic and synthetic, and having her cybernetics closely echo the human form is pursuant to that.

In the case of the hands, the main in-universe reasons to have human-like manipulators is for the sake of ease of interaction with existing tech/equipment.  Just about everything from weapons to airlocks to digital displays are built and optimized for use by human/humanoid hands.  While non-humanoid manipulators may provide some benefits on their own, they would potentially be a handicap when using equipment not specifically designed for her.  The humanoid manipulators may also allow for a smoother transition from organic to cybernetic limbs, as the "wiring" for that configuration is already present in the nervous system.

Ofidian In reply to Tekka-Croe [2016-06-17 02:31:14 +0000 UTC]

That's good reasoning about the hands.

It makes me wonder what kind of neural rewiring and genetic manipulation it would take to produce a being with human-similar though processes, but instinctual command over something like trifurcated tentacle limbs.
